  • The famous Jigokudani Monkey Park is located in Yamanouchi Town at an altitude of 850 meters in Nagano Prefecture and is a must-see location during the winter months.
Jigokudani Monkey Park was founded by Sogo Hara in 1964 in an attempt to keep local macaques from harm. It is the home to Japanese Macaques, also known as snow monkeys. It is located in the
Valley of Yokoyu (よこゆ) River which takes its water from Shiga-Kogen of the Jyoshinetsu (じょしねつ)Kogen National Park in the northern part of Nagano prefecture.
Due to the steep mountains, volcanic activity and harsh weather this place is called Jigokudani in Japanese it means ‘Hell Valley’.
The snow monkeys are a hugely popular tourist attraction during the winter and images of the monkeys sitting in the hot spring have been seen all over the world.
The Jigokudani Yaen Koen is open all year around, but December to March is usually the best time to see the monkeys are taking a bath in the hot spring water.
The pass is valid for 2 days from the date of purchase.
And it costs around 4,000 yen per adult and 2,000 yen for children (6-12).
To buy a 2 days Snow Monkey Pass, you need to exit Nagano station on the west side. You can purchase the Snow Monkey 2 days Pass from here. Walk through Nagano train station underpass and take the east exit to find the Snow Monkey bus stop no. 23.
The Snow Monkey Express bus takes around 40 to 50 minutes to reach at Kanbayashi Onsen. Once you get off the Snow Monkey bus, you need to walk for a further 25 minutes uphill before to reach to the snow monkey park entrance.
You may get a glimpse of some playful monkeys on the bridges or playing near the streams before reaching the main park. They are very relaxed in front of humans and casually run beside your feet.
In 1970, a photograph of the snow monkeys appeared on the cover of LIFE magazine and from then tourists are visiting from several countries at Jigokudani snow monkey park. Monkey are surrounded by thousands of people and cameras every day.
There are no cages, and the park does not have a perimeter fence to keep the monkeys inside. They are fed three times a day by the local park staff, they remain wild and live in total freedom.
In the world they are the only monkey who lives so far north, and that’s not all that. They are social, adaptable with an expressive pink face and thick fur coats which make them unique. The bathing monkeys are really cute to watch.
The park has one man-made pool around which the monkeys gather. The monkeys live in large social groups, and it can be quite entertaining to watch their interactions. The monkeys can be observed from very close and they completely ignore us.
The park is located in a hot spring area, and boiling water and hot steam are bursting through the earth’s surface.
The Enza café is a nice place to stop after visiting the Snow Monkey Park. Foods are delicious and so comforting after a long walk in the cold.
