- Today we’re travelling to Yamanouchi in Japan’s Nagano Prefecture with a clear mission: to find the snow monkeys soaking in the hot springs of Jigokudani Monkey Park!
We visited at the end of summer, so don’t expect any snow, but we did get to see the macaques swimming, grooming, and living their most relaxed lives at the Jigokudani Monkey Park, locally known as Jigokudani Yaen Koen. This park also forms part of Joshinetsu Kogen National Park.
This destination is often visited as a day trip from Nagano, however, we opted to spend a couple of nights, so in this video, we’re going to share our ryokan experience, explore the town of Shibu Onsen, and enjoy some hot springs of our own!
So we invite you to hit that subscribe button and join us as we search for Japanese snow monkeys together.

We journey to the serene and picturesque Yamanouchi, nestled in the heart of Japan's Nagano Prefecture. Our primary objective: to witness the enchanting spectacle of snow monkeys luxuriating in the natural hot springs at the renowned Jigokudani Monkey Park, a site that also graces the expansive Joshinetsu Kogen National Park.
Our adventure unfolds at the tail end of summer/fall. While the typical snowy landscape is absent, the experience is no less magical. We were greeted by the sight of Japanese macaques, also known as snow monkeys, engaging in their daily rituals. They swam with abandon, groomed each other with care, and exuded an air of tranquility, fully embracing the warm embrace of the hot springs. Known locally as Jigokudani Yaen Koen, this park is a haven for these monkeys and a spectacle for visitors.
Our journey to Yamanouchi wasn't just a fleeting visit. Opting for an immersive experience, we chose to spend a couple of nights, delving deep into the local culture and lifestyle. This video chronicles not just the search for the snow monkeys but also our stay at a traditional ryokan, an exploration of the historic town of Shibu Onsen, and our personal indulgence in the soothing hot springs.
We start our tale with our check-in at Minshuku Miyama, a quintessential Japanese inn offering a glimpse into the local way of life. Our first attempt to visit the Jigokudani Monkey Park is filled with anticipation and excitement. We then detour to savor the culinary delights of the region, including a visit to Ramen Tokumi and a taste of Nagano's famous apples.
Our exploration continues along the scenic Nofutomaru Footpath, leading to the serene Onsenji Temple. The second attempt to visit the Monkey Park is more successful, offering us unforgettable encounters with the macaques in their natural habitat. The day culminates with a traditional dinner at our ryokan, followed by an in-depth tour of our authentic Japanese room.
Join us as we delve into this unique experience, inviting you to subscribe and embark on this journey with us to discover the charm of Yamanouchi and its famed Japanese snow monkeys.
What I like about your videos in Japan, even the first ones, is you don't just go to the popular or trendy (and very crowded) places and eat the stuff other foreign visitors have put up in their vlogs or Instagram and then rave about familiar tastes or say "ewww" or pass on the unfamiliar ones. You have had experience living and traveling in Asia, but you're looking to try and experience new things when you travel, and especially Audrey appears to have done extensive research and is great at explaining what you are doing or where you are visiting, and her Japanese pronunciation is pretty good. You're willing to go early or at off-times to avoid the crowds, which is what I hate the most about traveling in Japan, (in addition to the Asian heat and humidity of summer), and you don't mind doing a little hiking or walking to enjoy nature or get to the interesting or important sites away from the crowded urban or developed areas. You also try to travel economically (as I do) but still experience a variety of lodging, activities, and food. You have learned about and adapted to many Japanese customs and don't come across as ignorant or arrogant, bumbling tourists as some people from English-speaking countries do (Maybe Canadians are just more polite and respectful than many Americans, as the stereotype goes.) The only Japanese custom I think you should remember when you wear kimono or yukata is the left side always goes OVER the right side, so your right hand can slide into the opening. Only deceased people are dressed in kimono with the right side over the left. (A lot of "bad luck" Japanese customs or etiquette are related to death or funerals.) Keep up the great travel vlogs!
Oh my goodness, the yukatas!!! We were taught which side goes overtop on our very first trip to Japan years ago, and as I was putting mine on this time around, I hesitated. I couldn't remember which side goes over. I am certain we got it wrong because right side over feels more natural. Thank you for the reminder and for the kind words.
Cool! Those snow monkeys must have been living their best lives: soaking in hot springs, munching on fresh fruit, and napping in sunbeams. But kidding aside, Japan is one of the many countries I love the most. Suddenly felt nostalgic during the time when I visited Japan to film one of our TV show episode last year.
As a long term watcher of your previous (pre COVID-19) Japanese i really appreciated your going to less touristy regions.
Thank you, Jamie! During our first Japan trip, we realized our favourite places were the rural ones and we didn't even visit that many. This time around, we decided to focus on those types of destinations and loved it! We have loads of videos to come from the Japanese Alps. 😊
This vid made me so happy
Thanks for watching!
Sam and Audrey, We love this video so much. That we watched it three times. Harriet and I have been to Yamanouchi in the Nagano Prefecture. Totally enjoyed the snow monkeys and the
many onsens . We could have spent the whole day just watching the snow monkeys. We got there mid afternoon. How cute were they ? So Cute.! Hope you guy are doing ok.
Sending you Hugs🫂 and Kisses💋 from Harriet , Jim and Yuki Richmond, Va.
Aww, thank you Jim and Harriet! It makes us happy to hear that you enjoyed the video that much. 😊 It was a really fun travel experience - we could've watched the monkeys swim and wrestle in the hot springs all day! 🐒 We weren't sure what to expect, but this place exceeded our expectations. 🌿 I hope you guys are having a great week! 💛
I do not comment often but this was an amazing video guys
Thank you, Serina! We're glad you enjoyed the video. 🐒🐒🐒

Vary nice enjoy 😀😃😄
Thank youuu!
I have been to Nagano once , I randomly went into an apple farm , the old lady there was so kind to give me some free apple , that was a very warm experience to me ❤
That's so sweet! 😊🍎 We noticed people in rural Japan were extra kind and attentive.
I stayed in that exact same ryokan (even the exact same room) at the first part of December. It was quit an experience to exit the shower into the freezing cold night air and jumping into the hot springs!
Cool video series on Japan this is one of your best! Glad you got to see the monkeys 😊
So wonderful you got to see the monkeys although sure you were hot and tired afterwards. It did look like a nice walk through the forest.
It was definitely worth hiking back a second time to see the monkeys. They were so cute and playful! 😊🐒
Guys .. that was just epic .. thanks for sharing 🙏🙏🥰❤️❤️
Thank you so much. The monkeys were the stars of the show! 😁
Loved it. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it! 😊 🐵
Can you pick me up a keychain while you're there? I forgot to do so during my last visit. LOL!
In all seriousness, love the video and brought back good memories of my trip last year. I ended up taking a combination of metro / local bus to get there.
Love your videos. I’m going solo to Japan in June for a month, and your info and presentations has been so helpful and fun! You two are so watchable! Korea?
Thank you! We're happy to hear you enjoyed the videos. Wishing you a wonderful trip to Japan. Korea would be a great idea for our next destination - we do love it there!
@@samuelandaudrey I’m also heading to Montreal from Seoul after Japan. Any videos for that part of Canada?

Love these videos, fantastic shoots and it all looks so fun. Thank you guys, been watching for 4 years and it's always a treat.
Thank you so much! Glad you're enjoying the travel adventures 4 years on. 😊
Honey wear your yukata left over right. Right over left is for a deceased person. 😂 😮
I'm pretty sure we wore it wrong at every single ryokan... Who knew such a small detail could carry so much meaning?! 😅😅
Saludos
Muchas gracias, Ursula. Saludos! 😊
Hey guys, I really loved this one!! The monkeys are worth that extra hike up the mountain. Great video and once again you are making me want to go to Japan again.
The second hike back was so worth it. So glad the monkeys showed up! 😊🐵 Thanks for watching!

The monkeys were worth the long journey there. It was so fun to watch them. 🐒
This is strange it didn’t come to my feed 😅 I’m so excited to watch this now!🎉
Sabrina🇫🇷🇬🇧
Ahh, the famous UA-cam algorithm! 😢 It makes me sad when videos don't even reach those who've subscribed to the channel, but I'm glad you found the video anyway.
@@samuelandaudrey indeed I don’t understand I’ve been watching every single of your vlogs for years now (commenting regularly and getting answers from you as well so you’d hope it would be obvious but unfortunately does not seem )I’m not sure what I was looking at then I saw your thumbnail… wth ?! I thought I let you know 🤯Not cool 😔 but anyway …unfortunately I couldn’t watch the vlog on my phone that’s another story so back home time to share and watch with the family 😘😘
wow guys was waiting for more Japan and here it is Thanks
Here it is! We've got lots of videos coming up from Nagano Prefecture and the Japanese Alps. 😊
@@samuelandaudrey So happy to hear this MORE please of Japan
Guys, from the outside it looks like you eat a lot, but you keep in great physical shape. How is this possible? Don't you eat anything between filming?🥰
Haha, we do eat a lot, but we also walk all day! The walk to see the snow monkeys was 40 minutes EACH WAY and we did it TWICE! So it was quite the workout. 😅
This was an amazing video Sam and Audrey video taped and your concern is about Eating really??
Really you just comment on how much food they eat well look at the video it is amazing
