I wouldn’t pry away from the ceiling at all for a “consistent reveal” of the vertical stock piece. The beauty of this method is being able to disguise inconsistencies between the molding and ceiling. Shove that crown all the way to the ceiling! No one will notice there’s more vertical stock showing but they will see a shadow between the crown and ceiling if you pull it away from the ceiling to maintain a reveal. And negates caulking which is just silly.

Great video! I would like to know how to you nail the backing(pieces that flush with cabinet’s frame)? Thanks

Was looking to finish my kitchen cabinets with crown molding, but my ceiling is almost 1 inch lower in the middle of the room than the end, causing a slope. When upper cabinets are installed, they are 3 inches from ceiling. Trying to figure out the best way to fill the uneven gap without the crown molding looking unparallel to the cabinets. Any suggestions?

@Heloise O'Byrne Thanks for the reply. What I ended up doing a few months ago was I ripped a 5' long shem that went from 1" to an 1/8" on my table saw. I nailed it to the ceiling on the far right side with my nail gun, making sure it was flush with the existing crown molding. Then I pivoted the left side of the shem making sure it was also flush and proceeded to nail the middle. Then I used a stiff mixture of joint compound over the shem, filling any subtle cracks and later sanded and painted it with the same color crown paint. To my surprise, it came out great!

Nice! But the installer really needs to keep his fingers a little further away from his nailer!😬🔨

Ill be honest. It looks fantastic but that caulked ceiling destroyed the look.

Thanks for the comment. Some people prefer caulking the ceiling, some people don't. It depends on your preference. From our experience, caulking the ceiling won't look obvious from looking from the below, however, it does look uneven when you look at the molding height.

Caulking will crack with the movement of the ceiling. Otherwise looks amazing.
