Huge Volvo fan, so glad to see these 5 cylinder beasts getting some major love! Only downside with the new cars, no more 5 cylinder awesomeness, I understand why but not much beat the sound a 5 cylinder engine!
As a manual V50 T5 owner, it does suck. But, I test drove a V90 T6 R-Design with the Polestar pack and it was way better than I thought. The auto box in Dynamic mode shifts really fast and is always in the right gear, blipping downshifts right down to first when coming to a stop. Nothing beats a manual though, but the next level interior almost makes you forget about it. The whine from the supercharger is also surprisingly audible, especially with the windows down. It is hilarious in a way that is hard to describe. Something about supercharger whine in a Volvo station wagon makes me laugh.
I feel it’s worth mentioning, although it doesn’t make 300hp, the Honda Accord V6 with a manual of that same era is also a good sleeper. Makes 255hp and 0-60 in 5.5 if I remember correctly. Can also be bought for around the same price as this S60r.
Somehow i ran into a 2001 t5 with 96k miles for 800 bucks. Bought immediately, guy thought trans was fucked but he reset ecu and never let it relearn his shift patterns... best cars you can buy for the money tbh
This'll be good. I bought my first Volvo - a 1996 850R - with 178,000 miles on it. The odometer died at 220,000, and I'm pretty sure it broke 250,000 before I donated it to charity.
I've got a lot of those IPD parts. I'd say look at some other options like FCP first -- they're cheaper and better for some reason. IPD is fine but the quality of their in house parts are uh... hit and miss. At least read the reviews on their site first. Some parts aren't as good as I wish they were. Overall they're still a great option. I still like them just be careful.

Bought one on Tuesday with 188k. $1900 out the door. Been sitting since 2014. Oil change and couple could later, good to go. And it's a manual... With the tan/orange leather. Keeping it for a bit.
I had a 1998 Volvo 850R out of high school & the VOLVO "R" brand has been my favorite since. I drive an 2008 Audi A4 now & I like it, but not as much as Volvo.
The biggest problem I had auto crossing my 06 Vr was mediocre all season tiers and the open front diff. The all wheel works great, but your still going to spin up the inside front wheel at some point. If you want to go slaying M3s in your swedish pig (i love my fat pig of an R) then may I suggest a limited slip in the front. Also, I know someone on swedespeed is working on a Haldex controller so we can manually adjust the awd % at any time. With a locked 50/50 (actually I think max is 60f/40r), lsd in the front, sticky tiers and some suspension like what's on your Vr it should be a flying pig.
It's been talked about before on the forums, but I remember seeing the topic revived somewhat recently on Swedespeed in the R specific forum. Essentially it would be a controller to manually control the Haldex clutch on the fly. So in theory you could have the haldex 100% locked all the time, or 50%, ect. The problem seems to be that either the pump gets too hot (as it was never designed to be constantly on) or the clutch pack gets too hot. This triggers a safety mechanism and turns off the haldex to save itself. But the work around would be creating an oil cooler for the haldex oil, which should reduce the heat to the motor and clutch pack. If you do a search on swedespeed you'll find the thread easy enough.
As cool as a haldex controller would be, I think a lsd for the front wheels would net you greater results at this stage. It's going to be the first hurtle you run into at the track (spinning up the front inside wheel on tight fast corners). These cars handle surprisingly well for how nose heavy they are, and the gen 3 haldex (which you and that 05 s60 have) activates really quickly to wheel spin and helps the car rotate. The car will pull itself out of a corner well enough until the front wheels loose traction. The problem I had was even with the rear wheels pushing in a tight corner the front inside wheel wants to spin free first. That's going to be your first weak point. If it were me I would drop in a Quaife lsd and then see where your next weak point is.
That’s fantastic advice. LSD should be allowed within the STU class so that’s going to be a critical mod. As for tires, we’ll have dedicated summers, maybe re71r?... And hopefully KW coil overs. We shall see -Hansen
The S60R is kind of a cool car. I just wish they didn’t have so many problems. My friend has one and every time I visit her it seems like there is another issue. One week the haldex stops working the next the turbo won’t spool up. The problems go on and on it seems. I’ve also had the chance to drive the car on some back roads and it feels heavy and pushy. I do like the notch-y shifter feel and how it pulls when working correctly.
lol I just got one last summer with 176k for 2000. It's crazy how good of a steal these can be in terms of engine. They stay strong and keep pulling. Everything else will and does break tho
I have watched enough of these videos on the Volvo S60R that I think I am starting to understand why they should be appreciated more. Just wish I could find a manual that doesn't have nearly 200k miles on it.
Yea, I picked up a XC70 last year with 122,000 miles on it for $6k. Hard to beat a Tank that gets 32 MPG on the freeway if you keep your foot out of it.
better service the haldex system with special attention to the angle gear, and hate to say it, but as an owner of a V70R and a tastefully modded C30, the C30 will stomp either of the P2 R's on an autocross course. but can't wait to see what you do to it.
Also your gonna want to stage 0 it first meaning replace powersteering pump, water pump, cam seals cam belt serp belt all hoses check the firebox, tens pully all coolant lines theres a long list im close to getting mine stage zero done.
Agreed. Some good things have been done though, according to the dealer that I bought it from, which I trust, somehow..., but the angle gear was replaced and pcv system was done 30K miles ago. But yes, stage 0 is a good call -Hansen
Get a chip with boost controller pull more boost out your turbo. Bigger injectors and higher volume fuel pump. The evo will be in your rear view mirror for less than 2k.
good buy this is an awesome car. i miss my s60r everyday . i want a wagon and make it awesome again. stage two is on another level get it there quick its a total different beast.
@@ShiftingLanes very nice. you need to get a FMIC if it hasent already been done. makes a big difference. the s60r is prone to heat soak and will nee one the stock inter cooler is small and not very efficient

Hell yeah cant wait to see what u do too it i have a 04 s60r red passion, u can push 600hp with stock internals but would be a good idea to shim the motor first then fmic and bigger turbo and tune and your set cant wait...
@@ShiftingLanes i plan on doing vids on repairs as well because through our fb which gregson is part of so you will have some help with that car and some knowledge from some of the tuners on our page, cant wait till its done..
Just be prepared to spend some money to get things fixed up. That's all i'm going to say. If you can wrench on these yourself, great. If not, be prepared to pay and good luck on the purchase :) These cars are awesome.
Beauty! Congratulations on the car and getting into the Volvo communiy! Love the color! Just taking the seats out probably saves a thousand pounds lol. The one thing i'm wondering how you'll get around is the steering. This car cannot turn tight to save its life. It's a tank, the turning radius is basically around the moon (and changing the turning stops won't help) :(. I fully support this going race car as this platform has gone racing previously and has kicked a lot of cars asses, surprisingly things like vipers and porsches were getting chomped. I'm still enjoying mine relatively stock. Theres a million things that need upgrading though. I see someone's already deleted the front headlight wipers. Those were a mod I did a while back.
The steering is a big challenge. Basically, outside of changing the steering rack, just get used to the slop and account for it in the driving style. Some of the slower autocross course layouts will be bad for this car, and the faster speed ones will be a lot better. Hopefully tightening up the suspension will make everything for the better. We shall see -Hansen
@@ShiftingLanes That would be my assessment as well. As long as the track/course opens up it'll do fine. The tight turns are where this car is going to get hurt. I've thought about ways to increase the turning ability but my only ideas were smaller wheels (17's with a lower profile tire or thinner tire or something -- but then you give up grip) to avoid rubbing the fender wall (but then how do you fit them over the brakes?!), and basically that's it... Other than cutting a channel into the support beam to allow the wheel to turn more without rubbing. You'll see what I mean as you drive the car for a while. That rubbing is going to become something you'll get used to. There are actually small guards in the fender well to keep the tires from eating into the fender wall. :/
Yeah course design is gonna have a big impact. I still prefer the most rubber I can fit within reason and still live with some rubbing. Hopefully I can fit 245 or 255 with no problem here. As far as cutting into the fender, that will be a huge undertaking, but I’m totally down for going to widebody. And I think that needs to happen haha -Hansen

EXTREMELY interested in the AWD controller. What’s the deal with that?

We shall see

I own a 2007 volvo s40 T5 R AWD and It's SO GOOD.
Definitely recommend sleeving the lower block around the piston walls. Picked my 07 up for 1200, w 101k.
Awesome purchase guys, this is a great car
Volvo for Life! Yeah!!! 😎👍
Nice purchase ! That 5 pot is nasty
lol I just got one last summer with 176k for 2000. It's crazy how good of a steal these can be in terms of engine. They stay strong and keep pulling. Everything else will and does break tho
20k € here to expensive
For 5k € i got myself a 2.0t 180hp
What a deal!!! Crossing our fingers right now
I have watched enough of these videos on the Volvo S60R that I think I am starting to understand why they should be appreciated more. Just wish I could find a manual that doesn't have nearly 200k miles on it.
I think my S60r came with the drilled and slotted rotors stock but it also had the factory aero kit
Subscribed, S60s are awesome.
Congratulations! Good choice!
YES! Everyone has a Volvo.
You should hit up Cyan which is a swedish racing team that builds volvo racing cars :)
But yes, stage 0 is a good call

Good luck. Can't wait to see what you can do. Also say goodbye to u-turns
Like like like loving the volvo videos here in the UK
Yeah man love this car! Timeless design
Cant wait for this build!!!
the sound is just gorgeous . i get shiver everytime. fuck. i miss my s60 r 😫 still has an s60 2.5t .
Nice! My Dad just got a s60 2.5T with 90,000 miles for $3,600. May I can use this vid to convince him to turn it into a race car
Get a chip with boost controller pull more boost out your turbo. Bigger injectors and higher volume fuel pump. The evo will be in your rear view mirror for less than 2k.
I raced one of these that had exhaust and BOV, in my stock Mercedes E500 with 300hp and killed him.
good buy this is an awesome car. i miss my s60r everyday . i want a wagon and make it awesome again. stage two is on another level get it there quick its a total different beast.
Can confirm. The VR was transformed with the exhaust and stage 2.

@@ShiftingLanes very nice. you need to get a FMIC if it hasent already been done. makes a big difference. the s60r is prone to heat soak and will nee one the stock inter cooler is small and not very efficient
you got really lucky to have one with all that already done. . im jealous. i beat the shit out of mine with 180k on it and was still pulling hard as shit
I’m glad you have a Volvo s60r I drive a 98 Volvo s70 t5 5speed
I got a s80 v8. Really nice car.. love it!
More Volvos? Subscribed !
Good vid. Tell the other Shifting Volvo guys to cap it at 12 minutes or so. Looks like no original suspension, but super clean. Nice. Need to find ways to drop weight for racing, I'm thinking. My son has his first car... 03 s60r he got for $500 that the other guy didn't do the work on, we are, and it is coming along. Auto trans unfortunately.
Pretty good deal. I only paid 50k for mine in 2004. It has 188k miles now.
Which is why i never sold it.... I was once offered $1100 for it as a trade in at a Honda dealership.
Ouch man. Trading in cars always hurt
Where else on UA-cam will you find better Volvo, car guy content... I'll wait
Hell yeah cant wait to see what u do too it i have a 04 s60r red passion, u can push 600hp with stock internals but would be a good idea to shim the motor first then fmic and bigger turbo and tune and your set cant wait...
We’re planning on shimming the block, hopefully in late winter or early spring! We’ll make a video on the process too
-Hansen
@@ShiftingLanes i plan on doing vids on repairs as well because through our fb which gregson is part of so you will have some help with that car and some knowledge from some of the tuners on our page, cant wait till its done..
Not sure how well the 4wd system will work in autocross. From what i’ve been told the Haldex system is pretty shite when the going gets tough
It will depend on the course. The tight, slow speed courses might be terrible. But it might excel in the high speed, long courses.
Lit car. I found one for myself with 148,000 for $4900. Thinking about pulling the trigger. Hoping to barter
They’re averaging around there. Check history, see if you can haggle based on condition of tires too. My tires were pretty bad
-Hansen
@@ShiftingLanes ill definitely do that! Thanks
Just be prepared to spend some money to get things fixed up. That's all i'm going to say. If you can wrench on these yourself, great. If not, be prepared to pay and good luck on the purchase :) These cars are awesome.
@@youtubasoarus I'll keep it in mind thanks
We shall see
-Hansen
And I think that needs to happen haha
-Hansen
@@ShiftingLanes Totally agree with you there. And in case you haven't seen it already, here's some inspiration for you. S60R race car ua-cam.com/video/U5G48jvO-LE/v-deo.html Pay special attention to what it's competing along side with ;)
Thanks for the link! I love the Kpax car. This stuff is inspirational lol!
Before you do ANYTHING with it. Clean the AWD system, change oil and filter! My english is bad but I think you understand.
I bought my new s60r the same day this was posted traded my na miata for it. Has 176k
How is it running today ? I'm thinking about getting one
i'd like my first car to be a volvo 850(R maybe) and then upgrade it. Nice video
Bruh the beginning had me cracking up 🤣
It be fun to se a vlogg you drive the s60R s60 polestar 6cylinder and the s60 polestar 4cylinder. Can s60R stand up to the polestar.
Touchscreens are stupid...completely agree
New R owner here. Binge watching to catch up. I really wish ur playlist was in reverse order so we could watch in chronological order tho
How you got it for
@@shanejzx1002 5k is wut i gave for mine. Nice name btw. Lol
Or maybe a low budget racing cup like the "Lemon Cup"
Going to be sick 👍
