When I do my van build UA-cam I intend to do as you have. Evaluate all the options and select the best for my use case. So many videos championing a solution based on it being the popular product. Those videos are not objectively reviewing a product. They are capturing someone's excitement about the new thing they just purchased. Loving the honesty and integrity you bring to searching out alternative and elusive solutions.
I like your down to earth honesty and it's weird talking about toilet stuff but it's a great video I'm going to make my own toilet I'm doing it differently than all of them but simular I'll try it first before ever installing but with mine the cost will be tiny one thing with these toilets there's no room for wiping down below so I need that so mine will be different but your video is one of the best thanks.

Re-watching a few months on as my base van arrives in a few days and I will be starting the build soon. I really don't fancy the black tank chores. We had a cassette toilet in a basic trailer that was always used on sites and managed to never use it. In fact we managed to sell it in unused and boxed! We always used the site facilities. After all, we had paid for a pitch and and access to the shower block, so why not use them. With the van, we intend to have more roadside stops between sites. Like you, one luxury we intend to have is a functioning bathroom. The composting toilet seems to be the best option and despite the hassle of importing to the UK, the C-Head seems to be the best. Easily replaceable urine containers and the top access crank are the deciding factors. Import duties mean it is not cheaper than other brands, but it does seem to be the best. I will be looking back through your archive to try and find what fridge you use, so if you see this comment, and reply, it might get to me quicker than your research....
That silver lining toilet is a dry flush and it is fine only for POO. The problem is it doesn't work well for pee!! So the only one aside from the one you chose C head composting but there is a newer incineration toilet rhat worked best. The issue is it takes a while lot of power per flush and it is appx $6000.00 for the newer smaller version. No odor. If you have enough power and can lay out $6G then go for the incinerating toilet. Higher end and little maintenance. ✨️ OH as far as what to use in a composting material try hoese pellets from hardware shops. The Nature's Head biggest problem is the pee container it is too small and nasty to change. The other one is a nicer size and has a larger pee side which separates much better than the Nature's Head.
Difficult subject well dealt with brother, in the UK our motor homes and caravans are virtually all fitted with cassette toilets. The latest models are fitted with odour extraction. Also the UK is not as vast as the USA and we can always get to a site with dump facilities. Take care, best wishes to you both😎

I went with C-Head for all the same reasons and, its less expensive. I've never used it, spouse has, but its there if I need it and I'm sure some day i will take advantage of the convenience. The Usual Suspects have squarish, molded, proprietary designs. With C-Head, if the 5-gal bucket gets too nasty over time, it can be replaced for $4 or so. As you know the urine container is a simple 1-gal water/milk jug and can be disposed of and replaced with ease. Not so with The Usual Suspects. Simple, functional, less expensive. For media I use aspen shavings and they work well but, I went the extra step and vented the unit.
(great video tysm) i've building out a van to travel/live out of full time and i have built a composting toilet setup but i have found no information on WHERE people dump their "humanure" in a sustainable way. i dont understand why you'd use a composting toilet just to bag it up and send it off to a landfill or water treatment plant. if anyone has ideas or input please reply with it please and thank you!
If you are more "local" in your van, you could set up a place to dump your composting. But, when you are traveling 1000's of miles, it's not an option. Down here in Mexico, central America, and South America.... There are not dump stations. Getting rid of black water is difficult. So, for us, composting is best for safe disposal. We double bag and toss the poo... And we put the gray water into a container that we carry to flush down toilets. Not perfect ... But it's one of the best options for us.
The only issue I have with all compost toilets is concept of the urine diverter, every person has slightly different position on the toilet. I think each person should have their own personal swappable toilet seat with urine diverter adjusted specifically for their individual comfort, or make an adjustable diverter so that the diverter will adjust to their users liking.
Terrific video! Your designs and decisions are the best--bar none. I have a new 170" ext 4x4, and I'm going to replicate your ingenius floorplan. I was hoping you would show how the toilet is situated in relation to the wheel well. Does it sit in front, or to one of the sides?
This is one of the reasons we went with the C-Head toilet... we were able to squeeze it up next to the wall and the wheel well. After watching this video I paid attention to a recent T&A episode where Trent said there are no black water dumping stations in Latin America. If true, could you still use your system where urine goes into your other holding tank?
Different countries have different laws... we can divert it to a container when we need to!! PS... we watch all of Trent and Allie too... they are great! Thanks for the heads up!
My favorite topic these days, poo! Lol! I follow a van build couple on Instagram & they use the C-head in all their builds. They don’t have the urine diverted into the gray, they just use water jugs. The good thing about the c-head is you’re not tied to the same urine bucket as in the nature’s head. When the urine container in the c-head gets gnarly, you simple throw It away & replace. They also use kitty litter-Pete moss or coco core not needed. A lot cheaper & seems more practical. A female RV-er had one & did a review. She said this brand isn’t made well for the ladies? I assume she meant the urine doesn’t necessarily go into the diverter properly? Would a female have to use a funnel for less mess? Also do you put your soiled tp in the composting bucket or do you have a separate bag for the paper? Finally, did you look into the wrappon green toilet? I had never heard of it until a few days ago. I saw a video of a couple that lives in a truck camper & they have one. It’s electric. Has its own tray & you use a remote to “flush” when you push the flush button, it drops the bag onto the tray, take the air out & seals the bag. Looks like it runs off 12 volt. Easy peasy! One concern I had is if you’re Boon docking, what to do with all those bags of💩?🤔😂
We looked into the toilet with the baggies, but were afraid the bags would be hard to get as we traveled around the world, so we crossed it off the list pretty quick! There’s an art to using the c-head as a female... once you get it figured out, it’s great! Took we a week or so... which meant some extra clean ups 😩 lol! Basically you have to lean forward when you pee and lean back when you poo! We get the doggy poo bags and put our TP in those... tie up the top... and toss in the trash! Works great and doesn’t fill up the bucket so quick. We had not considered kitty litter... we may have to give that a try!
Nice job talking about a delicate subject. Do you have any issue with composting toilet being so close to the shower? A number of van lifers say that the moisture caused by the shower affects the composting toilet. I think it causes bad smells bc the moisture can’t allow poo to dry. So they would take their toilet out of the bathroom when they showered.
We do not... we hang out towel from the cabinet over the toilet during showers, blocks any small water splashes from getting over there... the toilet is sealed up tight, so we do this just as a precaution. We also have both fans running during the showers and after, so that gets any humidity / moisture out pretty quick. I think because it is not closed up in a small typical shower area, that it is able to fight the moisture a bit better.
Great questions... we keep the 'doggy poop bags' by the TP... so, that stuff goes in the lil bag, tie the top, and put it in a lil trash can! Works PERFECT

We took a look... but, the price was crazy... and we were honestly afraid to have such a high heat source in our van. I know they are safe, but if our van caught fire, we’d lose everything! So... we crossed it off the list!

Oh. One more thing. You mentioned you dump your gray water at the dump station. I know you guys are going to be traveling around the world with your home. I follow a couple on UA-cam (Trent & Allie) they have a natures head. They are currently in South America & traveling with a couple who lives in a truck camper & they have a black tank. They are having a hard time because there are no dump stations in South America. I didn’t know that until their recent video.

Ha! We actually get asked this every so often! We keep the little dog poop bags by the toilet paper rolls... used toilet paper goes in a bag... tie a knot in the bag to seal it up and toss it in the trash! Works perfect!
The ppl who make the diesel fueled heaters that come right off your tank need to invent a diesel fueled poo burning toilet that comes right off your tank lol ...
Still waiting for someone to do an incinerator toilet. With enough solar, second alternator and propane I think it would be a great option. They do run about $3000 so maybe that’s why I haven’t seen anyone make a video on it. 🤷♀️
Thanks for not pooing in the wild. Too many are doing that are ruining it for everyone else. Composting is the way, just need to dispose of waste properly. You can modify them to tie into black tank for the Pee if you have black tank.
WARNING...TMI!!!! Having had three kids, my plumbing does not work like it used to, I doubt seriously I could manage to pee into a separate section, or poop without peeing...I can no longer pee into a cup at the doctor’s office without getting it everywhere
I used the Natures Head for a few months then saw the C-Head which we have in both of our motorhomes and have used them the past 3 years. (We've had best results with Aspen Wood Shavings) I like the cheaper bucket and urine tanks and the rest. When we get back to USA next year I plan to modify our 26' GMC motorhome with a composter something like this. ua-cam.com/video/9oI6ZspTkEk/v-deo.html But I plan to modifiy it with a Stainless Steel bucket and gear, and make it where one just pushes a button and the bucket turns for a few seconds. I'm happy with the C-Head but some visitors have a little trouble with it, and this modification is cool to just push the "flush button" and I like gadgets. Even *hitty ones.

*Not really a composting toilet if you trash the solids, technically. At best it's a VERY EXPENSIVE separating toilet. A much cheaper separating toilet can be made with all the same function as the name brands for half the price. Having to dump the poop out into a bag and clean the bin is JUST AS MUCH, IF NOT MORE WORK than a cassette toilet which can be all just liquid if you choose to poop in a bag not your cassette toilet, which I do. However, I'm back to using my DIY separating bucket toilet, because it's super easy to deal with. It's a 5 gallon bucket with a 1 gallon jug and funnel in front for liquids, an eco plastic bag with litter in back for solids, and a lugableloo seat. DONE.*

Why would you ever opt for a black tank over a composting toilet! Hooking up a hose to a black tank sounds like the worst experience ever and emptying it sounds like an actual nightmare.

You might want to address the frequent loud lip smacking though it is kind of distracting, could be your audio is picking up to much backround noise like when it's windy and the wind is louder than the person talking, I have heard putting a sock over the mike helps. I think you are right with the stirring mechanism, I have heard some videos say they get flies in this one because of no air flow?

Dumping Dark Matter was no big deal. But I can see where it can be an issue. Traveling all over the world. As there would not be places to dump it.

Thanks for not pooing in the wild. Too many are doing that are ruining it for everyone else. Composting is the way, just need to dispose of waste properly. You can modify them to tie into black tank for the Pee if you have black tank.

Having had three kids, my plumbing does not work like it used to, I doubt seriously I could manage to pee into a separate section, or poop without peeing...I can no longer pee into a cup at the doctor’s office without getting it everywhere

I used the Natures Head for a few months then saw the C-Head which we have in both of our motorhomes and have used them the past 3 years. (We've had best results with Aspen Wood Shavings) I like the cheaper bucket and urine tanks and the rest. When we get back to USA next year I plan to modify our 26' GMC motorhome with a composter something like this. ua-cam.com/video/9oI6ZspTkEk/v-deo.html But I plan to modifiy it with a Stainless Steel bucket and gear, and make it where one just pushes a button and the bucket turns for a few seconds. I'm happy with the C-Head but some visitors have a little trouble with it, and this modification is cool to just push the "flush button" and I like gadgets. Even *hitty ones.

*Not really a composting toilet if you trash the solids, technically. At best it's a VERY EXPENSIVE separating toilet. A much cheaper separating toilet can be made with all the same function as the name brands for half the price. Having to dump the poop out into a bag and clean the bin is JUST AS MUCH, IF NOT MORE WORK than a cassette toilet which can be all just liquid if you choose to poop in a bag not your cassette toilet, which I do. However, I'm back to using my DIY separating bucket toilet, because it's super easy to deal with. It's a 5 gallon bucket with a 1 gallon jug and funnel in front for liquids, an eco plastic bag with litter in back for solids, and a lugableloo seat. DONE.*

Why would you ever opt for a black tank over a composting toilet! Hooking up a hose to a black tank sounds like the worst experience ever and emptying it sounds like an actual nightmare.
Great information thanks! You might want to address the frequent loud lip smacking though it is kind of distracting, could be your audio is picking up to much backround noise like when it's windy and the wind is louder than the person talking, I have heard putting a sock over the mike helps. Otherwise a good presentation and informative
