I never knew an umbrella handle could sound so lovely.
🤣😂
@Carl Jones
That comment you made is so cute that I had to squeal ! Thank you. Yes, I love to listen to umbrella handles. BTW could I make a crumhorn out of an umbrella handle? Is it possible?
Makes me want an umbrella with a crum horn handle and a hidden sword blade in the shaft.
so real medieval music sounds like an 80s game soundtrack …noted
Nice! I did build an imitation of the crumhorn some years ago, after an article in _Experimental Musical Instruments_ introduced me to the innovation of the membrane reed.
I built it out of copper tubing and plumbing fixtures; for that reason, I dubbed it the "plumbhorn"...
heh..plumbus horn ;)
8 bit sound is older than I thought.
oh my gosh youre right...
i cant unhear it now
Makes sense that electronic music would progress in the same way as natural music.
I need to stop. I have sunk down a rabbit hole of unfamiliar instruments. Please help. Damn you, UA-cam.
I see that many people want a crumhorn! I also wanted a cromhorn, then, I decided I wanted a consort of crumhorns, but the prices were high, so I decided to build them in kit, and now I have a family of crumhorns: soprano, alto, tenor and bass. I saved a lot of money but also worked hard and I am satisfied with the quality; they are very similar to the ones in the video and I have used them often in concert with my early music group. Nice video, thanks!
Where did you buy the kit ?
J'imagine la jeunesse des années 1600, en pleine transe sur ce truc.
Very similar to a bagpipe chanter, the design is just more ornamental, plus of course the curve. (Nothing to be ashamed of!) Does anyone know what scale/ pitch these instruments play in? Another video mentioned they play in C or F at A=460 but this sounds like D at 440.
This is a trio of crumhorns at 440. There is a soprano in C, an alto in F and a tenor in C (the key being denoted by the 7 finger note). The curve is purely ornamental and doesn't affect the sound. The crumhorn is a capped reed instrument, with a reed inside, just like a bagpipe and has a parallel bore, so can only play one octave.
I want a crumhorn
Im so happy I stumbled upon this channel and series especially! Always love learning about different cultures and their style of instruments that played such a pivotal role in forging their musical history
I had a crumhorn on the pipe organ I played. It was my favorite stop!
You know, I never really thought "what are those instruments in Legend of Zelda etc." Now I know.
Check out the soundtrack to Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles (really nice soundtrack, by the way). It features instruments such as this quite prominently.
Which Zelda game has a crumhorn?
YOUR HIGH PRODUCTION VALUES HAVE INSPIRED ME TO FOUND MY OWN WEBSITE FOR STORY-TELLING. YOUR SPEAKING VOICE IS BEAUTIFUL AND RARE. .
Really interesting series of videos - and well played! Those of us beyond a certain age remember Gryphon introducing us to the delights of the crumhorn. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I always thought the downside of crumhorns was that they're a devil to keep in tune, which makes it particularly difficult to play with other instruments.
Yeah, Gryphon! Also Malicorne. Two rock/folk bands using the instruments.
my buddy showed me Gryphon a few years ago and I had no idea what instrument this was, so cool
I'm totally obsesed with Gryphon. In fact I've search this videos to know the instruments' name
I want a crumhorn too. Seems like I saw years or decades ago where someone made one with plastic pipe pieces, plus the reed mouthpiece. Not quite the real deal, but a fairly cheap alternative.

I didn't know saxophones used to be made of wood.
Sounds like the pre-evolution of the kazoo

Fun (and FUNNY) fact: I once saw on UA-cam a video of a crumhorn quartet playing a Christmas music piece where they decorated the outsides of their instruments to look like upside-down candy canes!
That's so cute I have to squeal
It's crazy how in tune the crumhorns were, they almost sounded like they were autotuned
It's crazy how the same person can be on three chairs and play three instruments at the same time
It's crazy how you can tune instruments and record them.
A rendition of this tune is in the 1981 film “Excalibur”, great sound!
In which track?

These instruments just make me happy
Ditto!

(when the song starts, just for my reference)
Very helpful video for me, someone who had never heard of a crumhorn until dad mentioned it 5 minutes ago.
Excellent, true medieval sound & handcrafted instruments!!
Lovely video! Do you mind if I use your audio for a video of mine? I would of course give your channel credit.
Of course! As long as you credit us we'd delighted. Please do post a link when it's done.
@@GreenMatthews Here is my finished video! I'm still adding credits and tags. Thank you for allowing me to use your awesome video! ua-cam.com/video/klC6noiOfcE/v-deo.html
where can I buy a set like this?
Delightful. An insight into what Praetorius heard and intended. The instrument on stage left appears smaller than the other two, so I suspect the crumhorn may have come in different voices (and so it does). Thank you.
All three crumhorns are different sizes. Just like with recorders you have here a soprano, alto and tenor.
Never knew about the lack of dynamic control... A mute, perhaps? Like brass players sometimes use...?
Great video!
I want a crumhorn
They're expensive.
@@TaiganTundra You can get a decent shawm on etsy for a very reasonable price.
@@greghenrikson952 Are you referring to the Zhaleika?
@@TaiganTundra No, actual medieval-style shawms. There are two decent outfits selling them plus others that come up. I've had good results with my natural reed shawm from Copernicus Bagpipes. He tunes them to run off of modern bagpipe reeds, though you have to find the very soft ones to make it work well.
I want a crumhorn
Please get one for me as well.

Quentin Smirhes made me want to learn more about the crumhorn.
That was informative and fabulous.
It seems that it has that $30 Casio mini keyboard sound. Like a pure sawtooth wave.
This sounds like if you were trying to make an acoustic chiptune
Yeah, the "always 100% volume" and the buzz really does give it that feel.
What's a chiptune?

So do I!
Basically it's like putting a double reed on the clarinet and eliminating the register key.
It couldn't be more beautiful! Best regards from germany!
For anyone interested in more music with this instrument, Spice and Wolf anime has a soundtrack song that's been done with Crumhorn. It's the song "Hamu" from the soundtrack. Here's its youtube link: ua-cam.com/video/jbsaZMG9w30/v-deo.htmlsi=-mE4gakGzEUxJtja&t=2154. Great instrument with a unique sound!
First heard it in a song by Djalma Corrêa called Os Quatro Elementos: Terra/Oxossi. Foda!
Can we play without cap? Or it is obligation to use cap when we play it
I was curious enough to research this instrument after hearing "Sir Gavin Grimbold" by Gryphon
Nice to see these instruments , and there strange sounds , are being kept alive . I noticed the french band " Malicorne " use a crumhorn , although I had no idea what on earth it was when i first heard and saw them play it . Certainly makes a change from guitar , bass and drums......although they sound great in the right hands too .
They used the same idea for a wooden piece that goes over the reed portion, of the Uilleann Pipe chanter.

Sounds like an instrument used in an old jim Henson production like dark crystal.
I want a crumhorn
I DON’T want a crumhorn.
It’s nice to listen to though.
The Crumhorn... great grandfather of the kazoo.
I want a crumhorn
On pipe organs, the Krummhorn is one of the most common reed stops.
I love the Crumhorn! :D
It's my favorite medieval and Renaissance instrument!
It's a crumhorn throw down!
Can you play “Careless Whisper”?
I love rare historical instruments like this. Where would you even get one?
Amazon. Delivery tomorrow, if you order in the next five hours.
I don't think there are any makers now taking new commissions. However there are still good second hand instruments that come up for sale. As it happens, I'm selling one at the moment. An alto in F by Korber. If you email me at mail@greenmatthews.co.uk then I can send you pictures and more details if you're interested.
How any n64 farm theme was made
Where the heck could I buy a crumhorn lol
I was about to ask if you were triplets but I noticed the slightest difference in the light. Great video!
Where can I find a transcript of this arrangement?
This looks as though it's the whole suite. Enjoy! edition-zefiro.com/index.php/product/michael-praetorius-eml105/
@@GreenMatthews Thank You!
Do you reckon an oboe reed would work inside one of the smaller crumhorns if I modified the cork to be the right size?
Almost certainly not - oboe reeds are very different to crumhorn reeds. However, Lizzie Gutteridge makes excellent crumhorn reeds if you wanted to buy some - www.consortof1.co.uk
I really want one of these.
So do I!
How to play the candy cane
onde eu posso ver mais instrumentos desse tipo? existe algum catalogo acessivel?
I'm so glad I googled "shawm" and found this channel hahaha :D
It sounds like a kazoo.
Wonderfull.
Oy, gevaltz!
So its a big kazoo
How is she sitting at three chairs at once?

What is the name of that piece by Michael Preatorius?
It's a suite of dance tunes called Terpsichore and the tune I played from it was the Gavottes.
Ye Olde Kazoo
I, too, desire to possess a Crumhorn.
And so do I!
What is the instrument used in your introduction?
That is an alto crumhorn made by Gunter Korber.
What a beautiful sound! The cumhorn might be my favourite renaissance instrument!
Just superb. Glad to have happened upon your channel
I love crumhorns.
So do we! 🥰
It’s like a medieval kazoo
It's better than a kazoo!
Just love it❤️🙌🙌🙌🙌
Just an expensive kazoo.
