I love how the mother's face was always out of frame until the very last scene.
Like if she's finally opening her eyes on her child, on their feelings
same
The first time she ever SEES her child…
I love how regardless of gender, the problem always arises from the lack of communication between parents and children. Harrowingly and beautifully shown in the movie. I could feel the depression and sadness in the kid right from the start...I teach students and see that the most unfulfilled and troubled lot are ones with restrictive parents who don't really connect with the kids....sad af, really.
I was afraid it would end with the poor child actually killing himself (i.e., the shots of the piled-up dishes and unanswered messages)...his asking his mother felt like the 'warning bell' for me. 😔💔😢
@@CynAnne1 *she. the whole video is abt how this kid is a trans girl.
So true
I agree with the comment but still don't think that the main idea here is the lack of dialogue. Saying regardless of gender sounds like you don't see that this is even a bigger problem with the trans community because of prejudice, not accepting your own body and many other problems that make life even harder.
@@CynAnne1 wdym piled up dishes and unanswered questions??
The last scene has me tearing up. The question and then the look of realization on the mother's face as she realize just what her child mean with that question. She's been so worried about her own feelings that she hasn't considered her child's in the least and now that she's faced with the reality that her child thinks about death she realizes that she's hurt her child in such a strong and impactful way. She looks absolutely horrified.
I like that the mom finally sees how something is wrong when suicidal thoughts are hinted at. Hinting that she might change and the future we can imagine is a better one.
Yeah it's what I try to do
This is so incredibly powerful! And I like the ending, because finally her mother looks at her with soe kind of, understanding.Of her behaviour, of the danger not accepting her means not only for the life of the child, but for the mother's life as well. It was very touching.
Thank you so much for your comment!
Thank you a lot!
OMG what a strong story!!! That' ending ... 😱😱😱
It is so refreshing to see very stylised and audacious author films from Gobelins. Thank you to the 2 directors for raising the issue of transphobia, transidentity, in such a beautiful short film.
It's very sad how many parents tend to miss the fact that their children are suffering until thevery last moments...
*suffering from how the parents are discriminatory af
I absolutely love this! As a trans guy I can empathize so well with the main character, she just wants to be herself yet her mother won't let her or try to understand. I like how the story was told and the unique artstyle was so refreshing!
Thank you so much !
So she is trang girl? Can you explain to me I didn't understand the conversation.
@@danielvasilev2080 yes, the main character is male to female trans. It's heavily implied throughout, but in the end she asks if she'd be a girl when she dies, which is supposed to confirm this.
@@AB-uf1et That is very powerful... Btw Im a trans guy too so I know the struggle.
@@danielvasilev2080 aww, I'm sorry you have to go through that too
My mother does not agree with me being bisexual. She hates it, but ironically her mother is lesbian and married.
That Crazy Sea Goat I’m sorry to hear that. I hope you realize your identity is valid and doesn’t depend on her approval.
I identify this way too. I find it odd people are often more accepting of either gays or straights but don’t recognize that everyone is on a spectrum (not saying your mother feels this way, but from my own experience I notice this). It’s so common. There’s so many misconceptions and negative ideas surrounding the idea of being bi. I hope your mother learns to accept and love you no matter what. I wish you the best in life ✨
You should ask your mum if she loves her parents. You should ask her if she appreciates for bringing her into their life, and not being adopted to other people who may not be as good as them, or give her everything she needed. You know if both her parents are girls she must have been adopted.
@@thatonetheotherone9169 lol what are you talking about. Not at all. Lesbian couples couldnt adopt kids until recently. The grandmother must be around 60 at least. Probably she was married to a man first aand had children and then finally came out of the closet and remarried. At least think of LGBT history when you reply 🙄
It isn't something you can disagree with. And It isn't something to hate, either. It isn't a disease. To be considered a disease, than the sexuality should bring some psychological problems directly connected with It, and that put you in a position were you want to hurt someone. This isn't the case. And sexuality should have only one purpose, instead of many (stress release, social bonds...). This isn't the case. And the sexuality should bring sterility. This isn't the case, you are perfectly capable of remaining pregnant, either with copulation or artificially. Even ask for some sperm and use a pipet would work. And plus, all the non procreation directed sex should be considered a disease (which, ironically, sink as a theory when you think that It exist a mental disease about being too promiscuous). This isn't the case. If all humans are sick, then nobody is sick. 😂 You are perfectly normal and healthy. It is your mother that has a very limited view about sexuality. You should teach hear that until you are safe and happy, and doesn't hurt anybody, than you are ok. You are perfect. ❤
I like how in most of the scenes they are eating, I think it's because it's the only time they actually together, when it's time to eat, I'm sure they don't have any time to talk outside of this period of time
The issues of identity, of transgenderism and a place in society... all such complex concepts yet such crucial things to come to a child's mind, yet alone the one featured in this video. It sheds yet another light on the unique but harrowing realities of our social views on these topics, of acceptance from fellow peers and our own family, of our thoughts of death.
On a more critical note, I loved the art direction of this video. The texturing, lack of shading, limited palette and stylistic choices help to make the animation stand out, yet emphasises the emotions felt by the child. The way the story limited itself to the kitchen was a nice touch. It's a place of preparation and socialisation, yet the child feels mute and halted in their' ways. It's extended to them wanting to be disassociative of the kitchen, the way in which they reject eating and observing food an intriguing yet clever move.
I have yet to say more statements about the quality of the animation, but I shall stop myself here. Bravo, Gobelins, for yet another excellently executed short by such skillful students.
"Transgenderism"
@@uperdown0 Yeah, being trans is no problem. The discrimination associated with it, however, is a problem. and a big one .
J'ai senti mes yeux me piquer.
Oh my god, that last line is so horribly powerful. A punch in the gut. I teared up. Thank you for this short.
The art is incredibly clever too.
Thanks for translating to English 😊 I agree! This short moved me, the slow build up, and the way the mother seemed to notice she might loose her child if she doesn’t accept them and listen.
Incroyable. Merci.
I'm absolutely shaking.
I'm not cis, too, and also had transphobic mother, and this film feels so relatable, even though I'm transmasculine, not transfem. The mother just cannot hear, even when she's listening, right up until the DEATH question arises. Mine didn't even believe I tried suicide at 10 until I was 23 and somebody else in our family reminded that to her accidentally. Only now she was finally shocked.
Thanks to every person making this film, I didn't know that such taboo theme as transgender struggle was possible to appear in Gobelins. I'm so happy that I somehow survived to see a better world.
I'm french but still gonna comment in english
Same, pal
Pauvres fous
What a thug life
Très cool
mais
This film does a great job at showing how eating can feel like a chore when you’re depressed.
As a French trans man...this hit hard, its so incredibly done.
Okay, did that last line give anyone else chills?
LOVE THE STYLE OF ANIMATION
legit, at the end when the mothers face was shown and her childs words r just making me emotional here
Quel talent ! Bravo !
Merci beaucoup :)
Merci beaucoup pour ton retour !
Just love it when parents finally realize they're supposed to be parenting when their kid drops a bomb like that. Nothing like a good wake-up call.
yeah XD its sad and stupid how in a lot of cases it takes a kid being suicidal for parents to realize there's something wrong and they need help, and sometimes even that isn't enough for them.
The animation is unique, crisp, and stunning; the storyline is tenacious, foreboding, and relevant; the voice acting and sound effects are nostalgic and lifelike; the soundtrack is haunting, striking, and simple but fitting. I couldnt have thought of any better or simpler way to describe and offer the experience of such a present issue. Amazing.

the subtle ways her ma makes her feel like a burden for suffering and needing help, that's something that made it really hard to transition. people make you feel so selfish.
i hope she finds peace and a place she can confidently transition one day
This brought tears to my eyes, I love this so much
Also Marion is awesome for accepting her friend
I cry at this one every time.
Great art style. This felt like a thriller.
I’m only about a minute into the video and I’m already blown away by the art style it’s so unique and has interesting lines and shading I love it keep it up.
Thank you so much, this is so encouraging!
This is a very powerful animated film. It has a very good message about just accepting people the way they are. And also listening to people when they try to talk about their problems rather than dismissing them or telling them their feelings are wrong.
SHE'S A SHE! Stop saying "he" in the comments, didn't you get the message? A trans girl is a girl, not a "boy wanting to become a girl"!
Thanks dude/dudette/dudany
@@thaicurrysoup672 @Elvis Private and you two above;you're all stars🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 and you understand respect. Wow, the ending made me cry TT
A beautiful story about transgender!!! Goeblin students never ceases to amaze me
This is wonderful, absolutely stunning! I've rarely seen this style of art and it was such an amazing choice to use it in this animation! The camera work was beautiful, the way that mother and daughter are barely framed together and ate the end when finally, we see the mother's face, amazing!! This puts all the technicalities of film in a stunning 2 minute animation! ❤
Superbe boulot ^^
Merci beaucoup :)
Thank you for making this. It's a beautiful and unique piece, and it focuses on a really important issue. Hopefully this can help more people understand trans individuals, even after a few hours there's several transphobic comments.
Thank you for your comment! Yes, it was inevitable I guess. But we hope it can leads to safe conversations for concerned people, with their families or else to feel less alone and at least represented. And for cisgender people, we hope that this can be a step towards open-mindedness and support for transgender rights.
Superb, poignant; tragic💥👊❤💯. Too many young suffer the ignorance of a generation that hid everything,so "life looks good/perfect from the outside". Kudos to EVERYONE involved in this much needed project👏👏👏👋✌Love your children for who they are , NOT whom you want them to be.

! Im glad it ended on a high note of the Mother finally realizing who she wasnt seeing in front of her the whole time.
Poor, poor girl... I wonder if this art style was picked for this story or the other way around.
Finally a place where no one says first and just likes the vid

I have been looking for this since last year and I finally found it! Thank you for the message this art provides.
Amazing. I was disoriented by the frame rate, but this deliberate use really adds to the story. The stress it created added to the suffocating atmosphere. Thank you so much for this
That ending hit me hard... oh wow
I can’t stop rewatching this, it’s amazing and so well perceived
The design is superb- so heavy and unsettling
What a heartbreaking ending! Why has this world become this way? We can't be who we truly are anymore, we have to dress, talk, behave the way our parents, our society, our culture want us to...
Quelle finesse ! C'est de la magie
Très fort, magnifique
