    A gigue that sounds like a gigue! What a breath of fresh air.
    So sad how almost no-one plays Bach dances as dances, out of fear of not appearing _profound_ enough.

    I realized how Bach wrote all his works well according to each instrument's characteristics.

    • @musingsofamusician4874
      @musingsofamusician4874 3 роки тому +6

      Yes, this works much better on cello when the low notes bring out the dissonances. This feels empty in comparison to the violin partitas and sonatas he wrote specifically for violin, where as the cello has those deeper resonances to fill the room and the overtones, so too dense of a music won't work. Kind of makes me wonder what he'd write for viola as a solo instrument had he lived longer for that.

    • @musingsofamusician4874
      @musingsofamusician4874 3 роки тому +2

      @@charlietian2074 I know that already, I play violin, viola and piano. What I was getting at, was that had Bach lived longer he would have wrote something entirely different like a Bach 6 viola suites of entirely new material. Bach's Cello Suite was written entirely with cello in mind by Bach, he didn't call it the Cello/viola suites or put an entire new viola edition out. He actually has done this before for some of his organ works, namely Sinfonia from Cantata 29. While the Cello suites may be standard repertoire now for viola, that was definitely not his intention. The best representative of what he would have wrote for viola solo is in Brandenburg Concerto No. 6, here he wrote with viola in mind and truly takes advantage of the natural instrument's frequency response. I would like to clarify that an A for viola is at 440 Hz and a Cello A is at 220 Hz, they're very different physical frequencies and thus different colors. This is made more obvious to me, if I play the lowest A on a piano and in comparison to 440 Hz A.

      @@musingsofamusician4874 well... I think someone like Bach would've cherished his pieces being played on different instruments even though he didn't originally plan that lol. Personally I feel that the melody line sparkles on violin.

    • @musingsofamusician4874
      @musingsofamusician4874 3 роки тому +3

      I doubt it because he's Bach, you should look up his personality and history. He strived for excellence so much, he was even picky on how an organ was tuned. There was even a famous student altercation where a dagger was involved because he insulted a man's bassoon. Everything he wrote was meticulously calculated. The melody sparkles, but the low notes don't reverberate like the cello does, which he purposely does longer low end notes with his cello compositions to take advantage of the timbre. Meanwhile, look at his Violin Compositions, he takes advantage of the upper range, the ease of chord changes because the bridge is smaller and the finger placement. None of this was by accident.

    You do Bach justice ..... I can give no higher compliment.
    When the voyager probe was sent on its journey into outer space our species included examples of our finest music, we contemplated sending more than one piece from bach. It was decided that we should send only one so as not to appear to be showing off.

    Fantastic performance!!! Tempi, phrasing, not making any pretty part too pretty....everything was spot on - truly a flawless performance - one actually forgot this is written for clumsy cello - this performance made this arrangement sound like it was written for the violin! As a violinist I always hear this suite on cello and think why did I not choose cello - not anymore! Well done again Johnny
