She is singing the part of a girl who is trying to persuade her father to let her go with her boyfriend to Porta Rosa to buy a wedding ring. ( Father disapproves of the boy) If she cannot go then she will take herself to Ponte Vecchio and throw herself in the Arno River. And she ends up by saying ' daddy be kind, be kind' Rita Streich is wonderful here. Not only does she sing beautifully, but she really becomes the girl who is called Lauretta.
This is truly gorgeous. I also like how well she acts the part of a teenage girl in love, alternately overcome with awe at a young man's beauty, desire, anger at the thought of being refused (almost pouting in fact) -- It's all there in her face as well as her voice. 5++ stars

I was working in a Record shop in downtown LA and this LP came into the store when I was 17. I was incredibly moved by her vocalizing. I sold at least 100 copies of the Rita Stretch LP. The record store was down stairs of the Chicago Musicians Union

My son watched the BEAN movie and at 8 years old, we tried to find out who it was by listening to maria callas and others but when he heard this recording, he said, "that's it. She's the only one that can sing the high notes like that". She appeals to everyone, even those who never heard a recording of anything like it before, she's the best of them all.
To add something else , my dear opera singer teacher knew her , he told me that she had the great hability to learn very fast ..He had the priviledge to sing an aria with her. Also with these words he told me " She could produce what the compositor wanted to ' bring' , this woman understood everything ( he means about music and compositor's feelings ) , it was a pleasure to met her "

A pity he is not more interested in classical music, it is such a joy to hear this kind of talent, and to appreciate the skill that Rita had, so superior to many today in her ability to modulate and control the tone and sound like a bird in spring

Sacrilege! Why do you hate Rita Streich? How can you even compare Streich to Callas? Callas doesn't even come close to Streich's voice and range. Bergdorf Goodman's is to Rita as Macy's is to Callas. Sorry if I offend! You do have a right to your opinion.
