I remember her giving her last Wigmore Hall recital when I was a child . She was one of the best singers of her time , but I am afraid that her beautiful singing doesn't get the attention it deserves these days. Thank you for posting this clip of Rita Streich. She passed away at the age of 66 in 1987 which isn't so old really.

Good heavens, who is this lady! Sings like a nightingale, with emotion, intelligence, impeccable musical sensibility. Utterly captivating purity of her voice. Thank you for posting this.

Zum Weinen schön. Rita Streichs Königin der Nacht war als Kind meine erste Begegnung mit klassischer Musik. Sie hat mein Leben so sehr bereichert.

This is lied perfection! Could watch and listen to this 10 000 times in a row and not get enough. Rita Streich with her wonderful coloratura voice shows she deeply understands what she is singing about. Note the great accompanist! She is an integral part of this performance and plays and breathes this lied together with the singer. Wonder if anyone knows anything about this great virtuoso?

Rita Streich was born in Barnaul, southern Siberia, in the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR), to a German father who had been a prisoner of war there, and a Russian mother. She moved to Germany with her parents during her childhood. She grew up speaking both German and Russian fluently, something that was extremely helpful during her later career. Among her teachers were Willi Domgraf-Fassbaender, Erna Berger and Maria Ivogün.

What a beautiful performance! I've always loved Rita Streich (especially her Zerbinetta), but this is really amazing! One of the best I've heard on this Lied!

Wow, thank you so much!!!! That is wonderful.
Thank you for sharing this - it is one of my favorite Kunstlied & my favroite version was always Gottlob Frick.
I never knew that Rita Streich has also a recording of it!
    Beautiful!

A great performance from a great singer. Her Song to the Moon from Russalka is another wonderful performance. If you like a baritone version of Nacht und Traume listen to Gérard Souzay -simply magical .
