    I adore this channel, and get a lot out of it, even though it frequently echoes my own thoughts (thus re-inforcing them, or, adding mental security in a notion, which is useful too). I literally made a video today extolling the specific virtues of the unsung Tele neck pickup, and how I play and use it differently to a strat. Bless you Dylan - all the very best from over here in the New Forest, UK!

    I bought a Brazilian made Tagima T-900 tele last year. The neck tele-style pickup on it is so beautifully jangly and crisp. It's also a pretty hot output too compared to some of my other guitars. I wish they sold their Brazil pickups by themselves.

    Great explanation as always, love the way you fully explain stuff.
    I wanted to ask you 2 questions:
    1 - what's the physical differences between the different alnico magnets.
    2 - In a humbucker there's the bar magnet at the center of the pup that determines each side's polarity, so why are the pole pieces, and do they have the same polarity as the magnet side facing them?
    Sorry about any English mistakes and really thanks for your great content, I have learned a lot and hope that i'll learn even more!

    I agree with your comment about shims.
    Another UA-camr that does guitar repairs and has done guitar repairs since the 70's swears by wood veneer and mylar sheets for neck shims because they are an engineered thickness making it easy to adjust the neck. Also over time they are less likely to compress like paper products.

    Go to your local leather shop and ask if they have a guild. They can put you in touch with a craftsman to custom make a strap to suit you. It wont be cheap but you get what you pay for. If its hand sewn its a lot of work and if he owns a leather sewing machine it cost him $2500 and up. You get what you pay for. I made my last few straps and they work fine.

  • @ravenslaves

    Shims, as a concept, are a non-issue. They can change the sustain and tone of a guitar, for "better or worse". But there's no set rule as to what makes "better or worse". I've seen examples of both. Fender style guitars are mass produced, sloppy built, and cheap...by design. So there's a lot of room for, often needed, alteration. You either like what you've got in your hands, or you don't. Best not to ask why.
    Things I've found in neck pockets: Matchbook covers from the 50's, same with business cards. Toothpicks, sheet metal, guitar picks, gasket material, bone, ivory, glass, glue (just don't), silicone...and blood (didn't ask and didn't touch), paper and plastic straws...and other materials.
    You do what you got to. If you can't play it, it doesn't do any good to anyone.

    • @perihelion7798
      @perihelion7798 4 роки тому

      Highly unlikely that a firm, thin shim in the bolt-on neck pocket will change the 'tone' of an electric, solid body guitar equipped with magnetic pickups.
      The tone of that guitar comes comes the electronics and hardware, and not from the body or neck material. Les Paul absolutely knew that when he built his famous 'log' guitar. He used a scrap piece of pine 4 X 4 for the body, and played it for years. If a denser, heavier material is used for the body, that guitar will likely have more sustain. But not always.
      I use very thin sheets of Mylar for shims, as that material has a rather low compression aspect, and that maintains it's shape and integrity over time. I completely avoid any cellulose products, especially paper, and most woods. Some hardwoods are very usable, but other woods will compress over time, and have to be replaced or augmented.

    • @ravenslaves
      @ravenslaves 4 роки тому

      @@perihelion7798 Didn't want to get into the weeds too much. But let's look at Les Paul and see what his reasoning was for creating the log in the first place. Les wanted as solid a piece, as possible and _practical_ to prevent the other strings from reacting when he played a fundamental. Because the interference from those other vibrating strings was impacting his tone. Les also knew that the material of the components played a _crucial_ role in the shaping of the tone for an electric guitar. That's why he was very specific about how the Les Paul was to be manufactured (and Gibson screwed that up as Gibson does). The Tom Wheeler interviews with Les Paul were very incisive.
      This is where a shim may play a role. The Fender design is sloppy and inefficient from a physics point of view. There is always an air gap between the neck and body that will alter the way it all vibrates. This impacts a lot of things to some degree. One of which is the transfer of that vibration to other strings (see: Les Paul). And that's just one point where it can effect the tone.
      THE BIG QUESTION: DOES IT MATTER?
      No. Not really.
      Because it's the _inefficiency_ in musical instruments that make them musical. Every tonal peculiarity of each instrument, no matter what instrument that is, is what we're drawn to. Very few of us want to hear the pure sine wave of the fundamental.
      Something else to consider. The electric guitar is a hyper-sensitive instrument. Those "little" vibrations are being amplified thousands and thousands of times. A small disturbance in a weak magnetic field and you can blow out a window (seen it done...not fun). So don't ever let anyone tell you that a slight difference can't change a lot of end product. The issue is that one slight difference is in competition with a lot of other slight differences. Everything effects everything.
      You just have to pick which differences you care enough about to change.

    • @perihelion7798
      @perihelion7798 4 роки тому +1

      @@ravenslaves Science says that your argument is incorrect. Vibrations from the guitar body, on a solid body guitar with magnetic pickups, WILL NOT impact the magnetic field created by the strings moving through the field created by the magnets in the pickup.
      I've tested this myself with a shaker device on a Telecaster, which shook the guitar at frequencies that were not created by the strings, and there was no difference at all in tone or volume. All you need is a rather cheap personal massage device with a couple of different speeds. There is no effect on the tone or volume. Try it yourself.

    I have a fender baja tele, and it has (obviously) a 4 way switch. AAAND an s1 switch (in/out of phase). And this got me thinking. If the neck pickup was reverse wound and i had the middle position in series and out of phase. Would that be humbuciking or only hum cancelling? Because a humbucker has two pickups in serial, out of phase and reverse wound. And ofcourse a magnet (that the middle position would not have)

    Don't understand why some ppl get hung up on some things that are necessary to improve playability (i.e. a shim for the neck) ... Fender knew this was a necessary thing to do from time to time , that's why they made guitars with the neck "heel" adjustment screw to act as a shim when needed !! If he knew it & created something to achieve the same outcome as installing a shim , then why get bent outta shape over a millimeter shim in the neck pocket ?! It's necessary sometimes ... To understand pickup sound charateristics , you have to be aware of inductance , LC circuit resonance , quality factor of those resonant circuit, and the metal properties such as relative permeability and condictivity . The metal cover for instance has conductivity, generating eddy currents thus low pass ( high cut) effect on the pickup. This is the major cause of darker sound of tele neck pickups. The higher dc resistance deteriorates the quality factor of resonance therefore diminishes the elevation peak in the high mid range 2-3kHz. This is the simple truth without fairy tales.

    The shim discussion is typical of people believing in things they want to be true. They want to believe that cost always translates into quality and that a more expensive set neck is better for tone without understanding that setting necks is a traditional method going back to a time when there were no screws, not a choice for tone quality. So they deduct that a piece of something stuck between screwed on pieces of wood must be bad.
