If you ever heard of the popular game Dave The Diver. The recipes are very interesting. Different types of sushi, rice dishes, and more. For example, blue spotted stargazer stir-fried in a sweet and sour sauce.

I would like to mention that a dish called the crimson fish roll in game has a texture similar to ice cream and melts in your mouth. Don't know if its true. And I did look up that two of the fish used as ingredients are actually edible. Except I couldn't find anything about the taste of a clown frogfish.

For those who don't know, Nicholas Pettas is a legendary fighter in his own right. He fought Peter Aerts, Badr Hari and the Korean giant, Kim Young Hyun in the heyday of K1 Kickboxing.
He is also the last Uchi Deshi (Live-in student) of the legendary Karateka and founder of Kyokushin karate, Sosai Masutatsu Oyama.
Nic is as legit as it gets.

Lawson is one of the top three convenience stores of Japan. You can survive off food from their stores, and is a salvation for visitors like ourselves
Hell, you could make a video on surviving off just the convenience store food, since those stores have basically everything to make a balanced meal

7/11 was my go to in Japan and literally the only one I go to. I mean it was next to the base I lived in for 10 years and I always get my favorite bentos in there like the grilled beef with sauce donburi, fried chicken on a stick, and oden. This was like 20 years ago and I still remember that store quite fondly and it’s something I wish American 7/11 could have. Hoping that I can go back and visit Japan one day.

The first lesson in a new dojo/gym... waves of nostalgia.
As to your question about memorable meals though, one of my most memorable is the first one i ever cooked for people other than family. Namely my German class in high-school. Everyone was supposed to bring in something German they enjoy. Some brought Haribo gummies or prepacked sweets and sausages or the like but i decided to take a german mini-meatballs in sauce recipe i had translated and add my own flare to it. I made a couple pounds of these things and i loved them but i had no idea how other people would react to them. Luckily though, the class (Germany native teacher included) absolutely devoured them until only a reserve i had set apart for friends were left. Which my friends promotely demolished and begged for more.
It felt great cooking something so many people enjoyed. That's something I'll never forget and something that's inspired me to keep cooking ever since. Ive got lots of memorable cooking stories but this was the real origin of my devotion to cooking for others.

This was amazing. JunkFoodJapan talking about his experiences at the dojo, the feeling of being a young man, hit some nostalgia.

Chanko Nabe! Famous food of the Sumo. And I have to say convenience store food in Japan is great. When I was in Tokyo I'd get either the Katsu Sandwich or the combo of half an egg salad and half katsu sandwich. When I was there the Lawson's had French Onion Karaage-kun and it tasted like they had soaked the chicken in French Onion Soup.

A few years ago pre- pandemic I walked to the nearest McDonald's for coffee in Tokyo in my t-shirt and shorts and slippers and as it was in November and was looked at strangely. On a side note McDonald's and yes Starbucks are really the only places that have trash cans accessible to the public. I think the earliest I seen a Japanese cafe open is 8:00 or 9:00 in the morning but for those who are there I advise going to one you will be amazed at how much care and respect they take in making a single cup of coffee expect to pay little more for it as it isn't cheap cup of McDonald's coffee but well worth trying. I don't remember the exact price but a cup will about cost about as much or more than Starbucks depending on what you have.

I have a friend who had a similar experience. But instead of Japan he went to China to learn kung fu from the Shaolin at mount songshan in dongfeng.
And becoming a monk in the temple and train there is an adventure on it's own. Basically going there and asking them to take you in is impossible. On the street to the temple are like hundreds of fighting schools. And the monks would be visiting these schools randomly and then invite people they deem fit into their temple.
And apart from training every day you are still a Buddhist monk and have to learn the scriptures and so on. They are really harsh about the rules. If you can't keep up with your training they don't care and throw you out. Breaking your bones during training is nothing special. If your arm is broken you can still run for training doing horse stance or something.
If your leg is broken you can learn more scripture and meditate or whatever a monk can do without using their leg. And if it is to sell Talismans and stuff to the tourists.
