IU should be considered one of the most versatile singer-songwriters in the South Korean music industry. Her songs stand out significantly from the current popular music trends.
She possesses a unique musical style and vocal delivery, yet she is widely recognized and accepted by the public. Her songs often contain numerous metaphors, and exploring her music is as engaging as solving a puzzle. In addition to her musical talents, she is also an exceptionally talented actress.
Does someone as unique as her belong to K-POP? Perhaps she should be referred to as K-TOP.

of course its different, its IU XD
iu is a soloist, debuted in 2008, yet still so successful until now. Yes she's not really a kpop, but she's an idol and maybe half of kpop idol right now are her fans XD
She's one of the most successful music acts in S.Korea, maybe arguably all-time. IU as singer/lyricist/songwriter hold this unique position in industry : she has immense popularity, but actually half of her stuff are not that "pop", she has some folk-ish, jazz, and indie numbers. Also her lyrics are deep and meaningful.
This single is her pre-release of her upcoming album. If you have time, pls check her other songs :)
    anyway, thank you :)

Here's everything you might have missed:
    1) IU is deaf/mute and V is blind in one eye. IU uses sign language at the dinner table.
    2) The cube (the director said it is called "nemo") represents the society which discriminates against people having disabilities or those who are simply different (often considered as misfits) thus eliminating them. (the pile of clothes: The pile of clothes also reminds you of BTS "Spring day"MV which also features it) 3) However Love truly wins all. IU and V stayed together because of their true love.
    3) The cam-recorder shows how the world would have been if the society didn't discriminate against them. They would have get married happily. If you see the scene where IU was singing in the mic and Tae puts a flower on her ear, the people in the back were pointing fingers at them.
    4) The scene where they are at the restaurant and the scene where she is on stage singing in her wedding dress, you can see how the people around covered in black are all pointing their fingers at Tae and IU (represents how harshly the world judges them especially in their happy moments)
    5) The whole mv was mainly shown from the pov of IU. You can see how she always put herself in the danger first and tries to protect Tae, how tenderly she loved him, her touches were so gentle as she saw his normal eye through the cam. They both are equally scared but when time comes, they can sacrifice themselves for the other. This is true love.
    6) IU taps three times during the scene where he grabs her hand tightly which translates to "I love you" in sign language.
People often underestimate kpop and Mvs as "shallow" but that's far from the truth. BTS Mvs and IUs songs/mvs have a lot of meaning and symbolism around it but people's prejudice holds them back from truly trying to understand the meaning behind what they see and come up with surface level conclusions. Many of BTS' songs take their inspiration from famous works of art and literature (for example their Map of the soul album taken inspiration from Carl Jung's books, their song "Spring day" is a homage to the students who lost their lives in the Sewol Ferry tragedy in Korea) Unfortunately people only react to some of their more commercial music and enforce stereotypes around them being a "kpop" band when they literally cover a blend of hengres outside of kpop. Listen to "Singularity" by Taehyung from BTS and tell me if it sounds like "kpop" to you. You would be pleasantly surprised if only you are more open minded to explore. Thank you for your reaction!

Kpop means pop music sing in Korean. Idol groups caught foreigners eyes because most countries don’t have the amount of idol groups in their market, but believe it or not the majority Koreans aren’t idol group fan girls/boys, they listen to solo vocalists more.

Is there a limit to this? Do Korean rock bands such as DIH, Crying Nut or Rolling Quartz get classified as K-pop? Or opera singer Sumi Jo, for example? I'm guessing not, and that K-pop must be associated with particular genres, but I'm happy to be corrected.

    • @sienna5083

@@kicorse K-pop refers to trainee programs to produce "perfect, unflawed" people. If a group, band, or artist makes it in the music industry organically then they are not K-pop. The genre of music does not matter. The band Day6 would fall (weirdly enough) under K-pop because they trained and placed together to eventually debut under JYP.

Don't be fooled by Kpop "labeling".
South Korea has so many great voices, for every genre. Kpop is the industry in which young artists are trained and become "idols. Most are true, full artists in their own rights, writing music and lyrics.
They are strongs on making great music mv with stories.
We don't see it anymore in today's mvd. I'm 55 yo so I remember the greats artists mvs made in the 80's.

My suggestion if you like to stay in the ballad region try Love Poem(live): ua-cam.com/video/OcVmaIlHZ1o/v-deo.html
She has more to offer than ballads but if that is what you like you wont be disappointed.
Got your point about overproducing, but thats kind of normal with mv and album songs theses days.

I generally liked your reaction. I am however slightly confused about something unless I heard it wrong. But I thought I heard you say that song sounded like a OST or from a Disney movie and then you said it was over produced. So if I did hear you correctly you are basically complaining that a song that was produced for what is essentially a movie, sounds like a song produced for a movie? Seriously? That is really confusing. It seems like you are saying that you prefer songs that are being used in a highly dramatic and emotional movie/video to sound undramatic and unemotional.
IU produced the MV. And to be quite frank about IU doesn't miss the mark on literally anything she does. She changes her songs to match the venue she is singing in, in terms of composition and/or instrumentation etc..
I know you also said that it was your personal preference, but I'd like to challenge you on that as well. Either you don't watch movies that have a lot of drama and emotion and use a sound track that compliments the story line and what's happening on screen, over I am missing something. In all likelyhood IU will make slight changes to the songs when she performs it live during her concerts. Not in a major way but in a way that better fits the situation. Changes that many listeners will not readily recognize but the emotional reaction one feels will be slightly different.
FYI no matter what song IU sings or in what way she sings it there will be people who think it could be an OST or Disney movie song. And that feeling comes more from the way IU is abe to convey emotions through her voice, be it happy, joy, sorrow, sadness.
She is the only singer that I am familiar with in my near 70 years on this earth, that is able to bring tears to the eyes of her listeners who don't even know what the song is about. It is simply incredible. And then when they actually read the lyrics they have a greater emontional reaction.
A refrain I hear a lot when watching people react to IU especially for the 1st time, are things like why am I crying, why do I feel sad etc. It is also interesting that you never hear that when the feeling is joy or happiness.
I first came across IU when I watched the Kdrama My Mister. She is the leading female. And she so captivated me, that after each episode I'd go to bed or off to do whatever, while still worrying about her. Crazy, yes?
She has a song that features Suga, called Eight. The music sounds very upbeat and even happy to those who don't know what the song is about. Once they find out by reading the lyrics and other people providing background the song changes for them. IU intentionally composed the song in that manner. The song is about her struggle in dealing with the suicide deaths of 3 friends. Junghyun of Shineee in 2017, one of her very best friends who had just appear with her in IU's kdrama Hotel Del Luna, Sulli who passed away in the fall of 2019 just before the start of IU's Love Poem concert tour and then about 30 days later another friend Goo Hara also took her own life. IU found out this tragic news during her concert and had trouble finishing the concert. She wrote Eight in the first part of 2020 and the song was released on May 6th. She didn't want the song to sound sad even while the story is extremely sad. The same song can make a person feel updeat and good or incredibly sad and heartbroken. That's the musical genius that is IU.
She also sings songs in many different genres, from Jazz, to R&B, Folk, Rock etc.
By the way did I mention that Rolling Stone Magazine added her to there list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time?
And her Workd Tour that starts in March includes for the 1st time stops in Berlin, London, Atlanta, D.C., New Jersey, Chicago, Oakland and LA.
She is one of the truely rare singers who sounds even better (if that is possible) live. There are a number of clips available from her channel (so they don't get blocked) of her performances at her various concerts. Her 2019 Love Poem concert at the Seoul Olympic Gymnastics Arena is iconic and there are a number of performances of songs are available. There are 2 from her 2022 Golden Hour Concert at the Seoul Olympic Stadium (the opening song Eight and the closing song of her offical concert My Sea, she always does an encore which are legendary in that they can run 2 hours themselves).
    Check her out.

Well… the song was blatantly recorded BEFORE the video was made, so… it easily could have had non-Disney style production and a video to match that. Which would have made for a better song, in my personal opinion. You don’t need to agree with me, but I prefer less polished production on songs that are as stripped back as this one.

@@markabusireactions Honestly, I think it's probably good I didn't recommend IU previously. My favorite of her songs is "Twenty-Three" which I wouldn't have recommended because it's a bit too on the vapid doll side of kpop (although nominally lampooning it). Instead I would have recommended a song called "YOU&I" which is WAY further towards the Disney music side of things than this song. Now I'm thinking "Lilac" would have been right choice, which I would have just assumed was too pop, the standout element being the sweetness of her voice. Anyway hope this isn't the last IU reaction we see from you.
