  • Today's edition could be called The Zetamath Special! We attempt his devious The Usual Suspects sudoku and talk about its twin Two Truths And A Lie. Prepare to engage your lie detectors :) You can play the puzzle at the following link:
    app.crackingth...
    Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. In cages, digits must sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. Clues outside the grid give the sum of the digits along the indicated diagonal. (Such digits may repeat if allowed by normal sudoku rules.) In this puzzle, for each total exactly one of the cages or little killers with that total is wrong.
Zetamath has also made a setting video explaining how he created this puzzle here:

Excellent solve Simon, I really enjoyed watching that! I do think this puzzle and 2T1L are both difficult in different ways, but I was happy to see you nail all of the intended logic on both of them.
I wanted to call attention to anyone who reads UA-cam comments that I set this puzzle entirely live, and an edited version of my setting of the puzzle is available on my puzzle UA-cam channel. Simon has kindly provided a link in the description if you want to see it.

Q3: Why don't you include 'XX' and 'YY'?
A3: Probably it's already on the list ('Scooby-Doo' for example), but not mentioned in this video. But if you think it's not, tell me what you'd like me to include and there's a good chance I'll add it!
Q4: You missed 'XX' at 'YY:ZZ'!
A4: That could very well be the case! Human speech is hard to understand for computers like me, especially British sometimes! Point out the ones that I missed and maybe I'll learn!
Q5: Could you turn these statistics into videos?
A5: I've been playing around with the idea and I'm open to input as to what people would like to see. Let me know if you are interested in this and/or have suggestions.

Then CTC posted the solution video under the title "The Best Sudoku Puzzle Ever?"...and that's when I notice I had failed to copy down the sandwich clues outside the box. That put me back on track, and I managed to solve the puzzle with just a little guesswork. Quite possibly the best sudoku ever, but there have been SO many on this channel...

It looks like it would be more convenient to notate the validity of the diagonal clues by making cells outside the sudoku be interactive. It looks like the diagonal clues have well behaved positioning in cells outside the grid. I image that using those extra cells could also be useful for other kinds of clues or notations for solving strategies.

Very interesting, and superbly constructed puzzle, as are all of the liar types. You made heavy work of resolving the 8s. After pointing out that you had a 1236 quad in R6, you left the 1s pencil marked in box 6. Had you removed them, you'd have placed the 1 in the middle of the box, and the given 5 made it 143. You were also slow to use the 2s & 3s in boxes 4 & 5 to put 23 into the 18 cage in box 6, making it the liar.
The easy way to resolve the true 14 cage is to note that 14 needs at least two of the digits 123, and since 2 was pinned in R9 in the box, it could only be 1346 (and the 123 cell was 2). Once R9C6 was 2, this meant that the 2-cell 17 was the liar, because 789 would all need to go into the two cells R7C6 and R8C4.
As soon as you had a 46 pair, an 8 and a 59 in the liar 23 cage you could have eliminated the 5.

53:58 for me!! What an incredible puzzle!! All the logic involved is awesome, I don’t understand how someone can get to set such a thing like this. I haven’t caught up with all the patreon’s content yet, as I was trying to go from oldest to newest, but I guess I’ll have to make an exception with that other puzzle from zetamath as it must be another incredible masterpiece.

watching from 24:36 onward for Simon to spot the 5 in the third box, to resolve the column one 45 pair. He often seems to miss this for a while, whilst going on a higher logical path, which of course ends up being right. But sometimes, Sudoku is the simplest!

The starting point is a lot easier to keep track of if you frame it as a proof by contradiction. I saw the bottom row, thought "Assume to reach a contradiction that this 11 is right", followed the logic, and got a contradiction. Thus I knew the 11 was lying.
Then I got stuck 10 minutes later, but I'm proud that I at least found the starting point.

Jackbox is a great game to play with viewers, though it can be crude depending on who you're playing with.
Not all viewers would contribute to the game itself, most tend to have to vote for certain players and for certain things depending on which jackbox game is being played.
The cap tends to be 6-10 players on a jackbox game, but audience members can join in and play exactly how I mentioned above (voting).

With regards to the Facebook Dickens story, the likely explanation for that is that you're friends with a lot of people who do crosswords, and other people who did the same crossword that you did ended up posting about or searching for that exact novel online. Facebook then sees loads of people they know you share interests with looking up this novel out of nowhere, and then goes "oh, this must be relevant to this demographic, let's start recommending it".
These stories all usually follow the same pattern - they knew to recommend it for the exact same reason you decided to look it up. There are some genuine cases of keylogging or spyware out there, but it's very rare compared to the number of times that humans just behave extremely predictably.

16:08: "So now either this clue or this clue is wrong."
And we know which one, too. Since the bottom row contains an incorrect 17 clue, the 11 clue, too, has to be incorrect (since if it and one 17 clue were correct, that would sum to 28. And if the remaining digits do *not* sum to 17, that would mean the bottom row doesn't sum to 45, breaking the puzzle). But if the bottom-most 11 clue is wrong, then both 11 clues in box 1 must be correct. Which means that the 23 clue next to box one is *also* correct because, again, if it weren't, the box couldn't sum to 45. It follows that the incorrect 23 clue is the one in boxes four and five

About Alexa and the obscure work by Dickens around 23:00 ... Why don't we try to bring the same level of logic to this puzzle as we do to the Sudoku? First the Rules for me please, I missed any previous reference to this Alexa issue in other videos. The way it is explained in this video, it's not clear to me why Alexa is even a suspect. Simon typed something into his computer (PC? Mac? what application exactly?) and later the book was recommended on his iPad (in what application?).
Seems to me, if Simon typed it, rather than asking, then Alexa has a cast-iron alibi. There must be something else, something Simon spelt out in another video but didn't mention in this one.

    • @kpaasial
