    ** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
    How do you spice up the already-piquant Wrogn genre? By removing the 9 of course (and replacing it with a 0!). Trust Jay Dyer to do something so dastardly. Nothing Is Wrogn is one of those puzzles that leaves you shaking your head with admiration for the audacity and panache of the constructor - check it OUT! (And, despite what the answer-check at the end claimed, we do think Simon's solution is correct!!)
    Play it at the link below:
    app.crackingth...
    Rules:
    Place the digits 0-8 into cells such that every digit appears exactly once in each row/column/3x3 box. Normal rules apply for all clue constraints in the grid (listed below), with the exception that any clue which has a 0 on it must violate its rule in some way. Correct clue constraints are as follows: Digits in a cage must not repeat and sum to the clue in the top left corner; digits on a thermometer increase from the bulb end; adjacent digits along a green line differ by at least 5; digits on a purple line form a set of non-repeating consecutive digits in any order; cells separated by a black dot contain digits in a 1:2 ratio; cells separated by a white dot contain consecutive digits.
    ** NEW GAS PACK IS OUT **
    The new GAS pack is out on Steam for PC here:
    store.steampow...
    It's already out on Android and App Store. 60 original puzzles by Sam Cappleman-Lynes, Clover and Philip Newman!! Earn party hats and dinosaurs with these brand new puzzles!

    Great puzzle, even if it was too much for me!
    Funny to see Simon get _so close_ to resolving the two thermos 🌡 starting in box 5 and then moving on before the final step ... as soon as you've identified that one of them has a 1 on, and so one of the bulbs has a 0, the right-hand thermo *can't* be the broken one.
    Also amusing that by the time he found the logic around the 36-cage being broken - ie, it _must_ have a repeated digit - the logic he had done around the thermo, the white kropki string and the pencilmarks/eliminations forced the r1c3 and r2c4 to be the same digit anyway.

  • @bryantaylor6010

    That was a blast to solve, thank you so much for sharing it with us. And if you were curious Simon, you could have simply replaced the 0s in the grid with 9s and clicked tick, and the software would have seen it as correct.

    • @poppyholly1759
      @poppyholly1759 Рік тому

      Except if the cage totals were taken into account, and they should be wrogn, then the software would be fooled still. For example the "14" cage starting in box 5 would then sum to 24.

    • @DerAlex86
      @DerAlex86 Рік тому +5

      The hint says "Puzzle doesn't include solution", which means that the only thing the software checks is that the rules of normal Sudoku are not violated (one of each digit 1-9 in every row/column/box). You could probably fill the grid with numbers 1-9 while violating all the special rules, and it would still tell you that "the solution looks correct (Puzzle doesn't include solution)"
      EDIT: Just tried it. Filled it in stupidly with the numbers 1 to 9 once each in every row, column and box, and got the message "Looks good as far as I can tell. (Puzzle doesn't include solution)".

  • @dwdei8815

    That was hilarious that the 9-cell cage summing to 36 could be easily achieved with all the 0-8 digits, but then it'd contain a 0 and therefore not sum to 36! What a hoot!

    That logic on the bottom 2 thermos was available as soon as the stems were marked: the right one could not start 0-6 (or 0-7) since that would place a 1 on the left hand stem, necessitating a 0 in its bulb; which would place 2 0's in the row.
    edit; the right thermo could not start 0-1 because that would make the whole thermo correct (0-1-and a digit bigger than 1), and thus could not contain 0.
    Therefore the right thermo could not contain a 0.

      @@iabervon If you write 0/0 = 2, you arbitrarily choose one of the infinite values of _x_ for the equation 0x = 0. *Undefined* means you are not allowed to choose‼ Moreover, if you really want to ignore this convention, which as far as I know is accepted in any math 101 textbook, the most sensible choice for the value of _x_ would be 0 or 1 (since 0/x = 0 and x/x = 1 for any nonzero value of x). Certainly neither 2, nor 0.5‼
      In short, according to a widely accepted convention, you are not supposed to use a fraction to compare the sizes of two zeros. No zero should be considered to be twice as large as another zero, because it simply makes no sense.

    26:10 Not sure if he gets back around to it with this logic (edit: he does at 36:30), but you can determine the 0 in box 5 at this point. You can exclude the 1 from R7C7 because that forces a 0 in R6C6 and creates a paradox because the bulb will be in order and have a 0. That means the 1 is in C7R1-3 and thus the thermo is broken and requires a 0 in R6C4.
