Afternoon Doug, it's been a while! These are so gorgeous and lush looking the blooms are so cool with their subtle beautiful colours! Hoyas never cease to amaze me with their variety of leaves and blooms. I am again out of room and I seriously need to rehome (a nice way to say sell) some to be able to add new Hoyas I can't live without... like IM-08 with the beautiful fuzzy blooms you made a video of a year or so ago.. she was an instant must have. It's almost impossible though... with all the new Hoyas coming on the market and prices so reasonable I need to be very careful, lol. I started using just the coco husks a year or so ago but found on the thinner leaved Hoyas I needed to add something to help retain water.... but also ended up watering everyone much more often.. so now my mix is the the coco husks, vermiculite and a bit of cactus soil. I'm still working part time so my time is important to be able to properly take care of all my Hoyas and enjoy them without burnout. Hope the weather has been kind to you... it's sure been terrible this spring for so many people. Take care and happy growing! 💚
Good morning Carol! There does seem to be more and more amazing Hoyas making into the trade. You are also correct that they are coming much faster than in the old days. I have the same problem with trying to figure out how to find space to bring some of them in, while still keeping some of my favorites around. Thank you for the advice on additives to add to the coco chunks to help retain some water for longer periods. I am beginning to find that it is not sustainable trying to keep some of these plants watered. Yes, burn out is a problem! I have almost eliminated root rot, but if I can't keep them watered enough, that causes its own issues. I am going to try gradually adding some more moisture retentive things like vermiculite each time I do an up-potting to see if it helps. Nice to here from you, and happy Memorial Day Weekend!
Thanks for sharing👍🏽! It's good to know that a professional hoya grower like yourself can have hoyas over 3 years that hadn't flowered till now. I've only started collecting hoyas around 2017 and the hoyas that survived from then are doing well but haven't yet flowered, although some have peduncles just 6 of the more recent purchases have. Look forward to your next! Dee, NY
2:31 Those are wonderful flowers, didn't see the fringing in the 1st shots. I see Hoya yvesrocheri has stapelia like flowers, several species of Hoya do, which is unsurprising as they're from the same family of plants. I got a Hoya coronaria Narathiwat cutting (or several cuttings) from AH Hoya because of their resemblance to Stapelia flowers. Searching for the name, seems this was just an AH Hoya thing, wondered if they'd named it themselves - now I'm seeing another offering from TropicsAtHome, dunno if they got theirs from AH Hoya or if this is a now recognized subspecies. Anywho, the plant's been growing quite well but NO flowers so I've started a couple of cuttings in other locations, one with considerably more light. I do think Hoya are generally high light plants - but available space in a grow room...
I know what you mean about lack of space! I have been doing a lot of purging lately. It is also good to try these Hoyas in different spaces to see if it helps them flower, and many times it will. I finally got the H. yvesrocheri to flower by moving it to another location.
Your hoya are amazing, and you are so knowledgable. Such a great information you share. I heard you might sell some of your cuttings sometimes? How do I get on the hoya cuttings list? I'm dying to get my hands on some of these beautiful specimen you grow!!!
@@planttherapy1860 No, I have not seen it. I can't seem to find photos of the flowers, but the leaves look like it was a carnosa crossed with something else.
@DougChamberlainVTHoyas yes, very similar to obovata but faster growing... I just thought I'd ask. Thanks for trying. If it blooms for me I will share it for sure! 🙂
very beautiful. still looking forward to blooming one of these bell like hoya flowers. i guess you don't have any recommendations for someone without a grow tent.
I will tell you Kristie that many of these will surprisingly flower on a windowsill. Hoya danumensis which has large bell like flowers has been flowering now for a month on my windowsill. Don't give up hope, I know some people who seem to work miracle's without grow tents!
It used to be that growers in Europe had easier access to these Hoyas than us in the States. Hoya paradisea is pretty widespread here now. I wish you good luck in finding these plants!
I don’t know how you have the patience to water a plant 3-5x’s a week along with the rest of your collection! When you restart it, hopefully one of the cuttings will take to a less fast draining substrate?😅 or a mix! Like coco husks + moss? I’m often drawn to hoyas from the Philippines or Borneo, but I’ll keep an eye out for PNG now 😉 Anyways, beautiful hoyas! Thank you for sharing 😊
Hi Ria! Funny you should mention the watering as it is becoming a problem for me. I simply can't keep many of these plants growing only in coconut husk chips wet enough, and I don't have the time for these long soaks to rehydrate them. Yesterday I up-potted one of them and used a 50% peat-based chunky mix like I used to use, to surround the root ball. I can't keep up with all of this very time consuming watering any longer. Watering a plant once a week is really all I've got in me. Thanks again for watching and I hope that you have a very enjoyable summer!
Thanks, Doug, for the pictures and information. I've seen Hoya paradisea with two different accession numbers on the market. Do you happen to know if they are the same plant, and which one yours might be?
There are a couple of different clones, which I only recently found out. The one in the video is apparently the Indonesian clone, I purchased it as a small plant about a year ago from here: peaceloveandhappiness.club/ I was just gifted the PNG clone that has Nathalie Simonsson's accession number.
Hi Doug. I have a quetion not related to the video. In your knowledge and experience, can hoyas live for a long while just in water (with proper nutrition)? I have little success using substrates.
I'm sure that I probably have a few flat mites on some of my Hoyas, but they are still growing quite well with very few exceptions. Some of those exceptions I have resprayed this summer with another round of sulfur. As far as respraying the entire collection with sulfur, I don't believe that I have the energy to take it on. I believe going forward I will spray a plant as needed. I think as far as pests go, the flat mite is not nearly as destructive or as maddening as the root mealie.
Hi Doug I have a Hoya Australis Lisa. It’s a young plant and I’m starting to notice these brown spots on leaves, even the new ones. Any idea what I might be able to look at? I use Mollys aroid mix for my Hoyas and water when I see it’s dry and they are in terracotta pots.
I never had any luck growing Hoyas using nothing but terracotta pots; they seem to dry the mix out too quickly. I grow my Hoyas in clear plastic orchid pots with holes in them; these are then set into terracotta pots to give them stability and prevents algae from growing inside the pots as they block the light. I am unsure what is causing the brown spots on your leaves. I just looked up Molly's Aroid Mix, as I have never used it. The only thing that I don't really like in there is the clay balls (leca, or hydroton), I have added it to mixes before, and just never made out well with it. I grow almost everything now in coconut husk chips with a little added perlite, or for thin leaved Hoyas, vermiculite. I have had extremely good luck with 95% of my Hoyas using this as a substrate, and it is cheap. I really hope you solve your brown spot problem as I know more than anyone how annoying this can be!
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas Thank you so much for your detailed reply. Someone else also suggested that I may have caused it from using miracle grow fertilizer. What do you typically do for fertilizer ?
@@Johnny-i9e I doubt that it is the miracle grow causing the issue. I primarily use Jacks 20-20-20 all purpose fertilizer at a 1/4 teaspoon per gallon every time I water.
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas thank you, the other possibilities I read about were either pests, edema or fungal but I don’t see any pests and don’t know how to differentiate the other two . I’ve isolated it for now and see what happens with it.
@@DougChamberlainVTHoyas hi Doug, I read or heard that you order internationally like once a year. Are there any places or suppliers that you have had good luck with overall?
Hi Dave, I’m a newbie hoya collector coming at you from Nebraska! I am reaching out to ask if you would help me get a grow tent set up for incoming new plants. Quarantining them is my goal with the tent. I have no idea what I would need beside the tent itself. Any suggestions for getting the equipment is greatly appreciated. :-) Cheers!
Hi Ellen, Other than getting yourself an LED grow light, and fan, you might need some kind of plastic benches to set plants on if your tent is large enough. If it is a small tent, then don't worry about the benches. Grow lights have come way down in price so it should not be too expensive. Look to the reviews on Amazon, and you should not go too far wrong.
I'm looking at the 4'x4x'x80". The tent alone on amazon is $180.00 there is a tent w kit for $600.00. The kit has a ventilation kit and other things. Do I need a ventilation kit for that size you think
There is a Vivosun 4x4 grow tent for $129 that is plenty good enough; I have one. You don’t need a ventilation kit as all that would do is to exhaust the humidity out of the tent and that is the opposite of what you want to do.
