- Legendary sportscaster and World War II veteran Jack Whitaker died Sunday morning in his sleep in Devon, Pennsylvania, of natural causes. He was 95 years old. Whitaker was a CBS Sports announcer for 22 years and covered football, horse racing and golf -- among others. Whitaker called Super Bowl I for CBS Sports as well as the 1973 Triple Crown Race with Secretariat.
RIP Jack Whitaker
WW II vet. Thank you
I grew up in the 1960s and 1970s watching him on CBS doing a variety of sports (and even a game show). He was a good guy and a class act and he will be sadly missed. RIp Mr. Whitaker!!!
Raising a toast to a fine career and a great life.
Rest well Mr. Whitaker.
I didn’t hear anything about his death. I just happened to look him up today, a true legend, RIP Mr Whitaker.
Some of his best reporting was the 1973 Triple Crown. I will remember him best for this work. RIP, Jack Whitaker.
May he rest in peace. I grew up watching him. My dad watched every sport. He lived a long life and I pray for his family and all who knew him. Rest in Peace Jake
Growing up in a different America and hearing his voice on tv/radio was as natural and as taken for granted as breathing. RIP, sir.
Live a Great Story!
And he did! Rest In Peace🙏
Rest in peace, sir. Thank you for your service during WW2.
As one of the first and best essayists in sports broadcasting, Whitaker died at the age of 95 on Sunday, and he introduced the elegance and erudition of this genre. His work is full of vocabulary, tweed wardrobes and thoughtful demeanor.www.dianjinwa.com/video/31210.html
He did a horse racing show every Saturday
Great man
😢 Sorry to hear
RIP, Sir.
RIP And Thank You For Your Service. Heroes Never Die But Legends Live Forever. You Were A Great Man.
Jack Whitaker was the host of the CBS Golf Classic during the 60's RIP Jack you will not be forgotten
Jack Whitaker was one of the greatest announcers in history. He should have never been kicked out of Augusta National. He was injured in World War II. Nobody on television today really comes close to his mastery of the English language and way with words. Rest in Peace.

Sad news, he was a true gentleman. RIP dear one.
Rip Jack you will be missed 🍸🍸🍻
Old school guy -- thanks for the life you led . . .
So what? He was just a reporter. Just like thousands of other's in the country. My wife retired as NeuroSurgical Trauma intensive care Unit. She was involved in the most horrible family killings here in Seattle that was one of the worst murders in our state. No thanks, no favors, nothing. The Mayor didn't even say thanks. Yet this reporter should for some reason get more attention. Are you kidding me CBS? Grow up.
So what? He was a decorated WWII veteran who covered all the top sporting events over the past 50 years. By all accounts was a first class gentleman and a man worthy of esteem. Your wife is not a nationally recognized figure and probably no one outside of Seattle knows who she is. Its wonderful if she saved lives, but that is no reason to downplay the passing of Mr. Whitaker.
Why don't you just shut up? Your wife wasn't a public figure. You could have just kept your stupid comments to yourself. Your wife retired. Big deal.
Oh Jack, why did you have to leave us at such a young age? Life is just not fair my friend. You take care and remember that our hearts and Minds will always be with you.
I actually have no idea who he is but I really feel bad when people that did great things in life pass away.
He was one of the announcers Super Bowl 1
and Super Bowl 2.
@spence I heard that a grainy, black and white 2nd or 3rd generation VHS copy of CBS' coverage of SB 1 surfaced a couple of years ago. CBS offered the owner of the tape a bunch of money, but the NFL threatened to sue the owner of the tape if he sold it to CBS. That's what I've heard, anyway.
CLASS ACT!
This mans been through everything all the Super Bowls Normandy ww2 the Vietnam war and he’s lived through 15 presidents
RIP
He once called the Masters crowd a mob and the Master's hierarchy banned him, similar to what they did to Gary McCord who used much more descriptive words as bikini waxing the greens and body bags at 13 where the leaders were falling off the board.
Bob Barker's clone?
O k. We all die. Nobody is getting out of this alive. How is this a loss exactly? He lived to be 95. Seems he out lived most people. Celebrate these lives, don't mourn them. Geeze Louise!
Ikr!
Why don't people like you and Gregory S above just plain shut up? I don't care about you, and I don't care to read your stupid comments.
Who?
Sorry, not sure what happened.
I've always found it difficult to feel sad when ppl at or close to this age passes on. You almost want to stand and applaud. It's hard to be sad when a person has lived a seemingly full life. I mean at that age, you're probably looking at God like "dude, what gives?"
I think everyone liked him. I know I did.
He kind of favor Bob on the Price is Right.
: Truly The World will not End till 'this' Generation passes on;:-

Gregory S , Sorry for your loss, or bitterness. But, a true case of false equivalency. Much respect for the expertise and care your wife brought to countless people in your community. That doesnt diminish the impact that Mr. Whitaker had on a much larger cohort of our population, likely for many more years. I'm not proclaiming him to be a semi-deity or some such (nor has any other commenter), he was a person like any other, but one that brought some greater meaning to the trivial pursuit of professional sports, for millions.
@@mitchellmelkin4078 False equivalency is moot. It's not about comparison. Sports doesn't interest me, it needs losers to win, it's needs fortunes to operate. Tolerating some things because they give the audience something they want. People seem to constantly ignore the bad to serve their need to watch something they "have to have" like a football game. That gives power to some who may not treat that status with the respect it deserves.
