Me too! Takes me back to late 70s! I honestly really liked the music and the opening titles. I still do hahaha!
Loved watching Picture Box in school, and still a fan now. Picture Box was my introduction to a lot of mythology, arts and stories that I still love today - this episode, Sleepy Hollow, Peter And The Wolf, among many others - I discovered them all through watching Picture Box in school. Alan Rothwell was a friendly host, I never got why kids were unnerved by him, although I did find the opening titles and theme tune a bit eerie when I was little!
13:13 - was fascinated by this as a child... My teacher at the time taught us about this development, and we learned about the process of raising water using an Archimedes' screw that term
I much prefer Alan Rothwell in this sitting position so we can see more of him. I always felt that the head and shoulders close up of earlier episodes was a little menacing for me as a child, added to the creepy opening titles and the (steel pan?) music, there was one very traumatised eight year old!
Yes, it is slightly less unnerving. However I always found the way he seemed to tentatively say "Hello..." at the beginning to be even more unsettling. The music wasn't quite steel drums but an instrument called a baschet which has crystal rods which produce ethereal sounds when the musician applies wet fingers.

Actually, this is the original recording from Wednesday, September 30th, 1987. It was given an encore transmission on Friday 2nd October but other than that was never repeated. Generally speaking the Picture Box episodes tended to be new each year, and although the films within them were often repeated in a three-year cycle, the surrounding presentation from Alan was always new.
