Jason, you are by far the best communicator / instructor I’ve come across on HAM-related UA-cam!!
Thanks for the kind words! Glad the content is helpful 🙂
You Sir are my go to Linux GURU!!! Thank you so much for all you do. Question if you can answer it how did you learn so much about Linux? Are you sys admin etc.?
Negative. Self taught with a bit of help from this community when I goof things up.
Hi Jason 😊 Many Thanks For Taking Time Out & Doing This Great Tutorial Video. Since I’m Only Using Direwolf I’m Probably Going To Do The First Step Number 1. 73
I just LOVE all your videos but your APRS videos are just Awesomeness!!
Thanks for the video
I am losing my mind trying to get this to work with the portable digipeater. Everything works fine when I use Putty to get in and open Direwolf. It starts and runs, but how to I get it to auto start? I want to be able to drop this setup and walk away.
I have tried all 3 options and none of them work. I think the screen option is the best, but it tells me "there is no screen to be resumed matching direwolf." I assume that means it did not start. Any help?
I have the boot launch issue solved with crontab, The issue I'm still having is assigning a serial interface into direwolf to allow me to send/recieve decoded data over serial. I'm using a stripped down hampi install on a ZeroW w/audio_dsp module and want to add a uart-bridge module to extend operational range vs wifi networking in the field.
Greetings Jason, the "@reboot ..." crontab entry is a perfect solution to my needs, thank you. When I ssh into the aprs RPi, "screen -r direwolf" displays the last screenfull of decoded entries. When I try to view previous entries by scrolling backwards, control sequences get displayed, and I'm unable to view previous screen entries. How to scroll backwards in screen, please?
Can't scroll back with screen as far as I know. However, if you use direwolf's log feature, you will be able to see everything. From the man page:
-l logdir
Generate daily log files in specified directory. Use "." for
current directory.
-L logfile
Generate single log file with fixed name.
Would be good to see this with a daily reboot included as well. you would then at least know if direwolf crashes it is going to reboot at midnight. I think you may have covered it in a Buildapi video a couple of years ago. its just a pain to hunt for the specific one
In crontab "30 23 * * * sudo reboot" would reboot the system at 23:30 daily and is what I use on my digipeater. You can see the uptime of my digi in the comments (green text) aprs.fi/#!call=a%2FKM4ACK-2&timerange=3600&tail=3600
@@KM4ACK Thanks Jason very useful, my digipeater/igate tends to have issues if running for more than a few days without reboot. I have now sheduled reboot at midnight and direwolf to start at boot. Keep up the great content :)
I like to use "which" rather than "whereis" to find where commands are installed, assuming they're in my PATH
how to upgrade direwolf version from 1.6 to the latest (ver 1.7)? really appreciate if you could make a video of it. Thanks 73 de 9w2khe
Install 1.7 over 1.6.
