Obviously they're doped to the gills, but seeing the team captains sprinting up the start of the mountain is such a stark contrast to the dull Sky / Ineos train just gently going up the mountain one domestique at a time.

seeing the devil all the way to 97...I look for that guy every year. And it strange to see them without helmets. I had forgotten that back then you didnt have to wear them and most riders wouldnt for the big mountain stages.

Yeah something like that, but he misstimed his season this year, plus he had a divorce going on. Focus was lower he probably also took the fame to him a bit too much, and then age also played a factor.
He still has the best climbing perfomance on a HC climb for any rider. Done in 1996 Heutacam.

Put 2001 lance armstrong in this race , what happens?
He gets smoked by Marco not sure about rest. In 2005 his mountain tt which everyone thought might challenge pantanis record wasn't close in end. It's top five though Marco has two fastest ascents.
@@ryanphelan6861 well yeah pantani in 95 and 97 had a hematocrit of nearly 53 while lance never tested over 50. If lance had the freedom to dope like this era I'm sure he'd keep up. If Ulrich was only 40 seconds behind and Ulrich lost over a minute to lance in 2001 . Pantani record up the alpe d huez was on flat stage and got dragged to the bottom so basically a time trial up the hill for him too.

Say what you want about doping, if one of us took epo and tried this we still wouldn’t even be close to his time. It still takes talent and the right physiology to perform that way. What a ride, what an era.

Pantani had his test tampered with during the giro… he was simply to good and causing issues by dominating so they put a stop to him . I don’t think he doped. The guy was pretty average on the flats but the hills he was unbeatable.

Of course he doped, however, compared to Armstrong and others he tested positive because the organisers wanted it…or at least not cover it up like in the other cases. Sure Armstring tested positive many times, but because of money the organisers looked away…

Simon I worked in professional sport (NotCycling) for many years. I get quite angry when I see people making excuses for dopers! doping is NOT an equaliser it NEVER created a level playing field that’s WHY riders did it the UCI was as guilty as the dopers with poor leadership the 50% level was frankly laughable, dope does not increase everyones ability by the same percentage, there must be no refuge given or excuses made for cheats. And that is exactly what any rider that took EPO , Blood Doped , Testosterone, etc etc did it’s ALL chemical cheating. I feel sorry for people like Christophe Bassons a clean rider driven OUT of the Pro Peloton by CHEATS
