Yeah something like that, but he misstimed his season this year, plus he had a divorce going on. Focus was lower he probably also took the fame to him a bit too much, and then age also played a factor. He still has the best climbing perfomance on a HC climb for any rider. Done in 1996 Heutacam.

Pantani had his test tampered with during the giro… he was simply to good and causing issues by dominating so they put a stop to him . I don’t think he doped. The guy was pretty average on the flats but the hills he was unbeatable.

Simon I worked in professional sport (NotCycling) for many years. I get quite angry when I see people making excuses for dopers! doping is NOT an equaliser it NEVER created a level playing field that’s WHY riders did it the UCI was as guilty as the dopers with poor leadership the 50% level was frankly laughable, dope does not increase everyones ability by the same percentage, there must be no refuge given or excuses made for cheats. And that is exactly what any rider that took EPO , Blood Doped , Testosterone, etc etc did it’s ALL chemical cheating. I feel sorry for people like Christophe Bassons a clean rider driven OUT of the Pro Peloton by CHEATS
