My Father took me to the New York boat show one year so long ago. Miss Bardahl was on display. She sat on an angle port side low. I was just a squirt but could see everything. Thanks for the seeing her in action again. Thank you Dad. You made day.
my dad had a spot on the boo on Lake Washington and I remember Miss Thriftway and the Thriftway 2 along with SloMo4 and 5 and of course Miss Bardahl . Thos were some great days
Growing up off the Puget Sound, waiting for Seafair and the thunder boats racing on lake Washington and at the Tri Cities was the big events for us back in the 70's and 80's.
Watching these bring back so many memories….i lived near the Niagara river growing up…. One year in the 70,s they raced there it was on wide world of sports…. It was so cool…..
in 69, I lived 1 door down in Santee Calf/ to U5EEEE, the finish in spired me all my life I was grade 3 at the time. so many valve cover nuts, the carb opening was bigger than my fist.
I’m an old fart now at 64 years of age & 40 plus years ago can still recall those monsters racing around & around Mission Bay here in San Diego California. When the show came to town we camped for 3 days out on Fiesta Island each year and had some awesome times with friends & family. Chuck Muncie in the “ Miss Budweiser” was THE Man Back then. There were unfortunately some pretty horrendous crashes sometimes when they would catch air underneath and flip way up in the air before crashing back down again. That was when racing in those took a REAL PAIR OF BALLS. Cool video here , thanks for posting 😎👍
@@dcolb121 Yes, I watched Don Garlits try to get to 200mph with an electric dragster. Love the big sound of the top fuel cars, but the biggest difference is that the EV dragsters are hopelessly slow. None the less it is interesting to see them push the limits of battery technology. It's just a different thing.
I remember actually seeing Miss Bardahl in Wisconsin when I was a kid. I wish I could remember exactly where. She may have been there on display for the racing fans, as I don't remember her racing. That was a hell of a long time ago.
I remember when we lived in San Diego we were in the Pacific Beach area. We watched Miss Budwiser and Miss Bardahl duking it out on Mission Bay in the mid 1960's. One race Miss Budwiser got taken out by a beer can in the water. Beer ca s were made of steel back then.
Oh yeah ! Was a wee lad then-Dad was on the San Diego Fire Department & he'd usually volunteer for duty during the races. So the whole fam damily would get into the pits for free ! Remember vividly Miss Bardahl, Bill Harrah's Tahoe Miss, Miss Budwiser to name a few.
The Atomic Cup on the Columbia River in the 60s. When they came by close enough to see tne driver's face at 100 mph your whole body vibrated from the roar.
I remember a race in the UK of these types of boats. The funny thing was that in the lunch break there was a demonstration of 'scuba diving'. Yep, nothing to see here folks.
REAL THUNDERBOATS!!! I grew up loving these monsters. Neck deep in the water these things would pound your ribs to dust while your ears flapped in the breeze!
I can remember similar boats in this class racing, as a lil kid in 1978-1981 when my dad was in charge of outboard racing at OMC Johnson Evinrude with driver Terry Leatherby. Outboards seemed so slow after watching these monsters
I was at the gold cup the year the miss Madison won the gold cup hear in Washington .Years later i was the semi driver that took the Miss Madison and the Miss Budweiser back to Madison to start the Filming of the movie Miss Madison .I still go to the Hydro plane museum here
I had a friend from work who drove the super Salami Miss Oberto for a few years and quit after a turbine replaced the piston engine. He said he felt unsafe in the boat.
I always thought unlimited hydroplane boats were run with jet engines? I can't recall seeing a V8 or whatever that engine is . I also thought the names of the boats were MISS , something or other. I.e miss budwieser .🤷🏼♂️
Look in the sky😂😂😂i mean water it a airoboat😊these beast are true dinosaurs now but back in the late 40s 50 60s they had some powerful hydros ,then the put engines in the back of the boat and said damm these things are really fast niw😂😂😂
Why would anyone ,go to an event , with fast moving objects , and video these objects , WITHOUT A DAMND TRIPOD OR SOME FORM OF STABILISATION? IS THE IDEA ,TO GJVE THE VIEWER A HEADACHE ???
I grew up in the Seattle area in the 60’s, love seeing miss bardahl again.😊
Yep, miss bardhal is the one I recall, I prob still can't spell it tho

I can remember watching these boats on the Detroit river in the late 40s and thought they were awesome.
I used to watch these piston boats as a kid during Seattle Seafair days in the 60s. Miss Bardahl was my fav.

I also watched those races on b/w tv up in Bellingham Wash. the Allison sound is captivating!
I remember the race at Sand Point. Budweiser in the corners, Pay-n-Pak in the straights. What a heat!

Thanks for that ! I grew up listening to these boats practice on the Detroit River , I love the sound.
I used to go down to Belle Isle and watch the boats too, I loved it.
Foot of Parkview.

Growing up in Detroit we would go to Belle Isle swimming and watch the practicing for the Gold Cup race. On the Detroit River it was awesome.
Grew up in Seattle, 50s and 60s, I saw some absolutely fantastic Hydro races back then.

Oh, you meant the velocity stacks? lol.
Hey Miss Wahoo! Come to Wahoo, Nebraska and show us your stuff in Lake Wanahoo!
loved watching wide world of sports in60s &70S TKU 😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
If this sound wasn't heard all over the world, there would b no freedom, none!!!
Fantastic video. Thank you for sharing
Turbines ruined hydro racing 😢
Just aint the same...

Naw, don't think that way amigo. LOVE the old v12 boats!! ...but the turbine boats are spectacularly fast. :) ...and admittedly TOO quiet!! xD
Have you ever watched EV dragsters? Almost no sound. Just not the same without that pounding noise.

Love the v12
Miss the ALLISON..MERLIN ..and GRIFFIN motors..❤️🤔
I love thunder boats. Turbine boats just don't have the same visceral appeal.
My dad worked for Garwood when he raced way back in the day.
Squireman flooded it out. Love the shovelnose boats best. Thanks for posting
I saw the Bardahl P-51 at the Reno Air Races last year.

Dam sounds like a Merlin too.
Yes-but do believe most are V-1710 Allison engines.

Thank you for sharing magnificent machines, and thank you for recording video in landscape mode. Im alergic to portrait video
so cool, love those old boats. i didn't realize that some of them run with an open pontoon. not sure why, i'm going to do some reading.😁
"The Green Dragon." I went to the Madison Regatta every year for decades.

That has to be one unhappy starter!
It's too bad this could have been a great video if the camera wasn't shaking all the time especially on the running boats far out on the water.
Forgot to bring my monopod, sorry. Next time . . .

Are these just direct drives?
😎👍
Check out Miss Supertest 3 she set a few records in 1960 she was a. Canadian boat won the Harmsworth 3 times😊
I think the cameraman‘s name is shaky
Im not sure but it looks like some them had the Rolls Royce Merlin in them ,The same engine in the P51they look like it anyway
That's what they are 👍

New hydroplanes run turbine engines. These are vintage boats they run Merlin v12s same motor that's in p51 spitfire planes.

Wasn't the Squire Shop the ex-Atlas Van Lines?
Shouldn't he at least allow the oil to circulate first?
3000 HP Roll-Royce Merlin aircraft engine
Nothing better. Turbines don't compare. 3000 hp!
Who was driving the Miss Bardahl?
I'm not sure, sorry.
@@jamie_trigg Several years ago it was owned by Dixon Smith and he regularly drove it

Chrysler Crew used two Hemi s coupled together.
Omg great boats!! Lowsy camera action. Gave me a huge migraine watching this crappy video.
I lost interest when turbines came around.
Some of the worst camera work I've ever seen!!!
Terrible camera work. Get you a gimble bud.
Bad camera handling / focus.
Sad waste of a Merlin.
TERRIBLE camera work!
How about a tripod.
