Thank you for not solving this challenge with 3D printers! It's great to see some grass roots problem solving in a hobby meant to engage our imaginations.
Totally. I much prefer to solve problems without having to resort to 3D printing immediately. It has its place but man, if I can do it with a cocktail stick…😀 Love this comment! Imagination is the point of this hobby! Amazing how underused it is.
They do sell hive scum that can make decent civvies but I would just use any old fantasy minis for civvies tbh. In fairness to GW people do tend to leave pretty quickly once the stabbing and shooting starts.
Yeah but the hive scum is a tiny box of four (not billions 🤣) and feel like gang sidekicks rather than population. But you’re right, any old box of civvies would work. In my Hive, when the stabbing starts all the people stick around taking selfies and making videos for Underhive Tik Tok! 🤣🤣
Have a look at the Stargrave scavengers and crew sprues. One of each sprue with some GW heads/pouches/purity seals could make around 15 civilians, or 5 per sprue. A little bit of trimming off the weapons and you're golden.
You could use click sticks from the entertainer £2 for little bag or £14 for big bag. Basically rods with “c” shape joiners each end. Would make good ramshackle stands or stalls
An yes, my kids drag me round there almost every week! Although the thickness of the click sticks isn’t great for the racks, they’d be perfect for a host of other stuff!
So are you going to take on the challenge of populating the market next? I have to argree that while some combat will take place in less populated areas, it shouldn't always be the case. Games like The Department and Gangs of Rome have crowds as an integral part of their systems.
I could spend the rest of my life populating an underhive! Zombicide has gratvrules for moving towards a noise. You could reverse that and have hive dwellers move AWAY from the noise. The. Your gangers have to navigate a fleeing crowd!
I can almost guarantee that the cocktail stick fitting perfectly in those plastic pieces was a deliberate decision if Owen Patten(?) was the one who designed this kit. He seems to really love doing “extra compatibility” stuff like that with all his work.
There's some absolute gold in here! Using all of the options in each kit is a great way to get more for your money, but it can be tricky to figure out how. That cocktail stick trick was genius! Cheers!
00:56 I've been wondering this for many, many years. A big ol box of 40k civilians and fantasy villagers/burghers would have been wonderful for so many things. And it's not like they've never had random civs/villagers in their catalogues before, but that was also in the misty before-times when they still were distributing DnD for Europe and the U.K.
I guess now GW charge per perceived point value on models. So civvies wouldn’t have any, hence they just don’t bother. If if don’t make money….GW scraps it.
🤣 yeah I think length is more based on UA-cam ad revenue than content. Once you realise they’ll pay you pennies no matter what, you can make the videos you want! 👍🏼
I just found out about this channel and I have to agree with you about the lack of “Mooks” an old American mobster slang for everyday people. I feel this way about most Wargames and all time periods and all categories. I really wish someone would make plastic model kits of citizens.
🤣🤣 Maybe in the grimdark future, everyone picked a side? The way the world is going it doesn’t seem too far fetched. 😜 but you’re right, no game has them. Not even bolt action (it’s has armed ones) which would be cool to have in say WW2 ruined houses like in Band of Brothers.
Just stumbled upon your channel. The quality is *chef kiss* and have you great ideas. For the past month or so I have been wrapping my head around making modular terrain tiles and terrain for Necromunda but it was going to be to convoluted. I'll be settling for the Underhive terrain mat and some of the other terrain ideas you have shown! Thank you for the great ideas! PS. Anvil Industries is planning to make Gothic civilians in December for their Digital forge. (Some of their STL's also make into their physical range). Looking really forward to those. The lack of civilians in Necromunda seems odd to me.
And you’ll have a load of spare toothpicks for those times when a hearty meal gets stuck in your teeth! 🤣🤣 P.s. I just clicked where I remembered your username. Monkey Island!
I’m sure I can eventually show how all the Modular bits go together but sadly, battle reports aren’t something I’m planning. Quite simply I’ve no way of filming them. 🤔
Stargrave has a couple of kits that would make interesting market goers, though they're mostly mercenaries, scavengers, or soldiers, so not quite civilians. Perhaps the "Crew" boxes with some kitbashing?
For population Lead Adventure Miniatures make a big range of post apocolypse and Astropolis scifi civilians that could make a great population for Necromunda.
Being the sort that buys kits sometimes to help support my FLGS, i bought two of these. But this answers the puzzle of what to do with all the bits (which i have doubles of because i have poor impulse control err i mean im supportive). And 100% where are the non-ganger hive dweller figures?
Yeah, some of those bits are tiny and I had to stick them to something or I’d just lose them (the cups!). Uhuh. Box of 4 Hive Scum is not what I’d call a “population” of billions.
Really cool stuff, working on my market, good ideas, and for random people i got the four models from the hive scum and converted them into buyers at the shops,
Also this video is now directly responsible for me buying an Underhive Market kit, because I was watching it and looked to the left and saw my container of cocktail sticks. (Or toothpicks, as we call them here in Western Canada. Dunno why; they make terrible toothpicks.)
🤣🤣 it’s a good kit for what it is. I’m pretty sure we call them cocktail sticks in a vague British attempt to sound more sophisticated with olives and Martinis. In reality we stick little sausages on them and serve them at cheap parties!
So while on the hunt to populate my hive, i came upon and thought about getting some esty "space pioneer" minis for civilians. . They somewhat fit the esthetic. Otherwise, like you mentiondd, the hive is devoid of life.
I think ETSY is always a great choice. And gives back to an invested community. But it’s still always limited minis for large(ish) cost. The only realistic way to do it is with 3D printing at home but with that comes the huge investment in 3D, learning and print time. I guess we all just have to get used to semi-empty underhives!! No matter what the lore states…
@@thestateofplay2023 Honestly, in the long run, my opinion is that a 3D may be a far more viable option. Especially with the cost of them hvaing being reduced and with so many how to videos thanks to youtubers like yourself its definitely not as daunting. Yeah I’m really waiting on a true plug and play 3D printer. No assembly, no build plate adjustment, pop-off prints, easy pour non toxic resin, washing and UV curing built in somehow. It’ll come. Just takes one company to focus on that rather than ever increasing K numbers. 2k, 4K, 8k etc etc. just make them plug and play first. 👍🏼😜

I am forever wishing for GW to release a boxed set of unarmed civilians to breathe life into 40k/necromunda. I swear civilian Tau and Eldar, Votann and Imperium would sell like hotcakes. A few stl makers have put out civilians but they're never quite up to standards.
There’s a huge amount of money GW leave on the table with some very strange decisions. A GW wet palette, Space Hulk, 40k terrain gone to name a few. 🤞🏼
