Very well done. A comprehensive essay covering two great modern writers.
They are two of my favorite contemporary writers
Ishiguro's a pale view of hills completely blew my mind with its twisted ending, a feeling I never got from any of Murakami's work
It’s a great novel.
Probably unrelated but
Drawing inferences
UK and Japan may be vastly different but they do share many similarities:
- ends of the continent
- first in their continents to industrialize
- population made of immigrants forcefully integrated together
- messy alphabet system in writing
- to a certain degree xenophobic
- has monarch
- invaders
- archipelagic
- known for bad teeth
- unexplained obsession toward tea
- has the North South divide where the South thought North are barbarians
- their neighbour across the sea hates them so much
- expensive currency so their old people enjoy retiring in tropical places
- expects everyone to simp their culture
- likes football a lot but always lose crucial matches
Brilliant video as always. Your channel is to underrated. This should be viewed by more people.
Appreciate it.
Thank you for sharing all your hard work and opening of these books so that people have a chance to contemplate about all the amazing ideas
Very thorough on Ishiguro and really interesting comparison between Ishiguro and Murakami!
I love both authors. So I might do a video focusing on Murakami. Thanks for your comment.
Also thanks for all your hard work
Great Work, Keep it up.
im so thankful for this video
You’re welcome.
Sir, you are now becoming my favourite UA-cam channel.
SUCH a wonderfully made video essay. The analysis is fantastic, of course, but even your choice of visuals make it such an engaging piece to watch. There is clearly so much care and attention that you've put into this. Side note, thanks to you, I was tempted to have both sushi and fish & chips. Thank you for inviting me to watch this. You've just found yourself one more subscriber. :)
Thank you so much. Perhaps a good mix would be fried sushi. I dont know it has been invented yet.
@@Fiction_Beast No thanks needed! You deserve it. Try Tempura Rolls. And California Crunch Sushi Rolls. They're fried. And sushi. And a perfect embodiment of the line, "If you love something, let it kill you."
I love your content! Please go on!
Thanks
My favourite Ishiguro's novel is the Buried Giant. Somehow the ending scene stuck in my head for a very long time.
I loved Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun. It conforms to your summary but in a contemporary way. I also just saw Drive My Car which is a transformed Harukami short story that is quite moving and pensive in the hands of Japanese director Hamagushi, maybe Ishiguro meets Harukami for dense interiors and entertaining storytelling with interesting characters who do ultimately share their feelings.
Ishiguro is great. one of my favourites.
Wonderful video!
Thank you! If you haven’t already plz consider subscribing. It helps the channel immensely.
The content is great and so is the analysis....
Thanks. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Great comparison! ( I can’t read Murakami.) My favorite Ishiguro novel is The Unconsoled although I have to admit I didn’t start loving it until about page 287! I wouldn’t say, “it didn’t pay off,” and I guess the Times wouldn’t either since they called it a Masterpiece!
I suppose I should give it another read. Thank you for the feedback.
It is a masterpiece.
Good to know. I’m on p 279 and not loving it yet. I find myself skimming Murakami because he’s a bit prolix.
Love your humor.
Cheers!
Please make a video about Murakami too. Really enjoyed it. Thanks.
Here’s my video on Murakami ua-cam.com/video/GzcOQ8v_rNg/v-deo.html
This is a great review. I think you nailed Ishiguro psyche. No where else, I have heard the dual ending possibilities of, A pale view of hills. When I first read the book, like you, I correctly came to the same conclusion. I think it’s a great technique.
Your book covers are much fancier than the one’s we get in US, which are plain and utilitarian. You must be somewhere outside US, where publishers love good book covers. I don’t like Sci-Fi, as such not enjoyed Ishiguro’s Sci-Fi venture. Although, I have a copy of Klara and the Sun; I have stalled it for months now.
My favorite Ishiguro are, A pale view…An Artist of the..and, The remains on the day, in opposite order. I think I saw his growth as a writer evolving in these 3 novels, maturing in the third one.
Thank you for the comparison with Murakami. Never thought about that. It’s great comparison. Thank you for the awesome video.
Thanks for your comment. I’m going to look into his sci-fi. I’m not a big fan of that genre but am coming around. Looking forward to his premises and settings.
I’m big on Proust and am searching for large print 📚
I just discovered you today. I hope you gain more subscribers.
Thanks so much!
After reading his first three novels when they came out, I knew he would win the Nobel one day. It was reported that he was surprised.
Remains of the Day, no doubt about that. I read it twice, and would love to read it again.
It’s a great. Sometimes I wish I had written it.
Or I could write the remains of the night.
Same for me.
Today is the day when i stepped in haruki murakami's world (finished kafka on the shore) and also found this channel so I'm so blessed.
Looking forward to get more of Japanese litrature info
Haruki murakami's best ❤️
Thank you! I love Japanese literature so will make more content for sure.
I am very happy to have accidentally found out about your web site. I would like your take on Indian literature. One of my favourite writers is Amitav Ghosh who resides in the States.
From India I made a video about the white tiger by aravind adiga. Please check it out.
I agree. It would be very interesting to get your take on Amitav Ghosh who has written prolifically and is very well-known. Aravind Adiga is a sideshow relatively speaking
I’ll make note of it for future projects! If you have some insights on Ghosh would be great to hear.
@@Fiction_Beast www.publishersweekly.com/pw/authorpage/amitav-ghosh.html has a list of his books and reviews each one. As far as the author himself is concerned www.amitavghosh.com/bio.html will give you more background. He is a master of magical realism like Murakami :)
Nice content
Thank you!
I think this video really reflected how much you dint like ishoguro’s work some how it was the subtle way how you were talking about him as compared to harukami. Did him no justice i think
Actually I like both but I have to choose I prefer Ishiguro.
Mr Fiction beast, might you add (english) captions to the video, pls. thank you.
Please do a video on Tanizaki
The Buried Giant is one of the best novels dealing with the legend of King Arthur. It has a naturalistic feel.
The Unconsoled is a brilliant book but very hard. I think it ill be more appreciated in the future.
Here from Instagram 🙋 thank you for inviting me)
Thanks so much! Welcome!
Have you read “Klara and the Sun”? It’s my favorite 😊
