The instructions with my seed starting system say to use half the amount of food as you usually use. This worked for me with a variety of vegetables last year. I didn't measure exactly, but my germination rate was close to 100%.
Very cool. I used it again and I got much better germination rates once I used the clear tray on top.
I constantly use my aerogarden to start seedling every year. I get a 90-100% germination rate. I sanitize my sponges with boiling water and wait until the water cool before inserting the seed into the pods. I use gloves after the boiling step to avoid bacteria growth. Then I use a thick black plastic sheet (trash bag cut to size) to cover all pods for the first 5 days to prevent algae growth. If I'm starting my seeds in cold weather I place a towel over the entire thing for 5 days as well to keep the heat in (I leave a crack to make sure it doesn't overheat).

I put my pods in boiling water with a bit of neem oil. I also sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on the pods once they’re placed that helps with the mold. since there no real movement of water I put 5 drops of peroxide in the water to keep algae down. I cover mine with plastic wrap I’ve had about 90% germination rate.

great video! I had no idea this accessory was available for the Harvest model, thank you!! instead of the included sponges, I'm using a small piece of loofah with a cotton ball on top to hold the seed. the roots weave their way through the loofah easily

I'm guessing someone already made this suggestion but I'm too lazy to figure that out! So I learned from Little Tech Girl that communion cups are the *perfect* size to go on the AeroGarden seed starting system.

Your video was very helpful. Aerogarden lacks detailed instructions. I wasn't clear about the removal of the pump nozzle until I saw your video. Did you plug in the pump cord in the back of your Harvest Aerogarden? The instructions state to remove the pump nozzle, but nothing about the cord or why you need to remove the nozzle. I started lots of seedlings in the Harvest Aerogarden using the original 6 hole deck and the pump fully operating with excellent results. I bought the seed starting system to grow more seedlings at one time.
Yes, other than removing that little pump topper piece, everything else should be the same. That piece is removed because the underside of the tray actually has a piece that basically takes its place. Also with the tray and all the seed pods in place that nozzle would get in the way.
That you for showing the seed starting tray. I have a tough time starting hot peppers on the south end of Florida and this should make a big difference.
I start all my peppers and tomatoes in them. Works great!
Tip - instead of tweezers placing seeds into the peat pots- get a wooden skewer and wet the pointed end then the seeds will stick to the tip and you can place them in no problem!

Again, very methodical, and thank you for showing the actual results. Maybe I will try the indoor seed tray under grow lights instead of the $$$ Aerogarden for my step #2.
I do the cheap moist paper towel (actually toilet paper bc some paper towels have fibers which don't break apart easily) in baggie trick to germinate most of my seeds. Trick for me is to get the sprouted seeds into starter trays as soon as the root shows. But that has saved me going through starter tray set up on seeds that are not willing to sprout.
I did the paper towel method with my peppers last summer. Works really well
I have used my seed tray to jumpstart several Aerogardens, but not for the outdoor garden. Seems a waste to put the sponges in the ground, guess that's one way Aerogarden makes it money. It isn't really necessary to give food until the seeds start sprouting. I haven't had a problem without the humidity domes, but it is nice to have the option and Aerogarden should really have come up with a dome for each half or something. I suspect it is because each seed comes up at different times and grows at different rates.
The little top of the take out tray worked out really well. I wish they did have a better solution but my makeshift one seems to be working 👩🌾

I started carrots in my Aerogarden and 23 out of 23 germinated.
That’s awesome. Have you grown them in there before? I wouldn’t think they would form roots in a hydroponic system.
@@HomegrownFloridaZ9a First time starting carrots. I also started zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes and yellow squash. The yellow squash didn’t germinate but everything else did. Every thing else has been transplanted and is in the greenhouse now and doing great.

I am starting to use my aero garden for tomatoes. How long do you have the light on per day?
It should automatically come on for 12 hours each day
Have you tried to start cucumber seeds in the aero garden? I was thinking of doing some in mine, but not sure how they would do. Also not sure when I would need to start them if I did.
I haven’t tried that yet. Mainly because cucumbers have sensitive roots. If you do end up doing it, I suggest either leaving them in the machine for their whole life or get them out while they are super young so you don’t disturb the roots as you remove them.

Another UA-camr used dollar store plastic shot cups to cover the seeds. That might work for you.
That’s a good idea. I ended up using a take out box top that worked pretty good. It’s a whole piece so it covered the whole tray. It definitely needs something. I’m surprised aerogarden didn’t think of that.
How do you harden off the seedlings?
Once I move them to the pots, I water them heavy for the first week and leave them in indirect sun. I’m in Florida so my hardening off is more about heat than cold. Once they sit in shade for a couple days, I move them to a spot in my patio that gets half day sun for a week. As long as they are doing well, then I move the pot to where it will eventually live and give it about 2 more weeks before I transplant it to its forever home.
Im having a problem with my aerogarden Ive grow lots of things in the aerogarden before but I'm not getting the water movement when the light goes on i tried everything but still no go any ideas? thank you
It sounds like the pump is bad. Try removing the pump piece inside that sticks straight up and wash it good. Replace and try again without the plants in it to see if it’s circulating water. If that doesn’t work, reach out to aerogarden through their website and customer service should be able to help you get a replacement pump.
