INGREDIENTS:
- Coffee
- Water
HARDWARE
- French Press
- Spoon
- Grinder (if you have whole coffee beans)
This recipe uses a 7:1 water to coffee ratio.
In the video I used 4.5 cups (1050 mL) and 5.4oz (150g) of coffee
Try it out and let me know how it long you let your coffee brew for!

"If you have tap water, well, that's all you got so use that" lol this is the most honest coffee making video ever
I try 😂
Let tap water sit out for a few hours to eliminate chlorine
People in Flint Michigan rolling their eyes from their chemo appointments.
Flint was basically forgotten about, so sad :(
I only have urine
Thanks for a recipe that doesn't require 1 KG of coffee and 3L jars like the rest of them on youtube.
😂😂
Literally just watched a video use 2 cups of coffee grounds and use 3 cups of water. What a waste, couldn't even watch it after that since I know I wouldn't personally use my coffee grounds like that lol
How would you use your coffee grounds? It's also a concentrated mix, so im not entirely sure what youre looking for...
@@BlackTieKitchen I have a small coffee press, and very limited coffee grounds since I'm still testing cold brew out. Maybe for legit cold brew drinkers, that amount is reasonable but for me who is very new and just trying this out, that amount is insane 😅
Its just a 7:1 ratio. Can use whatever amounts youd like!
The first time I made my own cold brew coffee I basically had a caffeine overdose 😂😂 I was shaking and shivering and I felt like I could see sounds.... Soooo I'm using this video to try again 😂 This time WITH measurements 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Caffeine is an amazing drug 😉 Let me know how it goes with the measurements and make sure check out some of my other videos! Thanks for watching!
Don't worry it does that a lot of the time when i drink cold brew coffee, this shit is strong lol
Maybe you have a low caffeine tolerance
@@phieso160 hahahahaha Miley Citrus im dead here hahah
I would make the cold brew with the same amount of coffee and water that you usually use. If it is too weak, add more coffee. I found that cold brewing nasty tasting coffee, greatly makes better coffee. I can make cold brew for less than 50 cents a cup. PS: I like the video.
Don't worry I have only been a chronic addict for my whole life.
Just bought a french press and made some cold brew. Thank you so much for having a video that's not overly complicating a simple process. I got caught in the rabbit hole of some PhD level french press videos.
Haha glad I could help! A lot of coffee stuff goes down that rabbit hole and turns people off (e.g. pour over). But at the end of the day, its just water and ground coffee and way simpler than they are made out to be
This is dope, now I don’t have to make cold brew for an entire village
Lol how were you making it before?
Black Tie Kitchen I was caught up using giant jars and a truckload of coffee
Ahh. Unfortunately, it does use quite a bit of coffee, but there are easier methods than creating ad-hoc filtration systems with jars and such 😁
This is hands down the most underrated comment in this entire video.
So easy! And here I was thinking I would have to buy some fancy equipment. I use a French press every day for hot coffee so this will be easy! Thanks for getting straight to the point!
Youre welcome!
Love the video and channel! This is so easy to follow and simple. Better than other videos I've watched.
Thanks for the kind words and for watching!
you’ve gotta be the coolest dude i’ve seen in a while, thank you for this vid
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Finally! Your video is one of the very few that had exact measurements (and in grams)!
I saw so many of them that said “2 cups of coffee, 3 of water”. The thing is! Three cups of water can be easily be converted into grams (or litres) since since we’re talking about weight. But! The two cups of coffee are measured in volume! And basically I don’t wanna have to go through my old maths and physics lessons to just be able to make two to three servings of coffee.
Sorry for the rant, I was becoming a bit frustrated😂😂
Coffee is akin to baking - great coffee needs exactness which you cannot get without proper mass. Especially since 1 cup (volume) of coffee is very different depending on the grind size... 1 cup of a very fine grind will be suuuuper heavy 😂
One of the most underrated channels I’ve seen in a long time. Keep it up!
Thanks!
This is an underrated channel. Very great production quality! Love the videos
Thanks a lot! It means a lot and is much appreciated 😁
Who underrated it?
The comments on this video are so wholesome! Thanks for the recipe
Yes they are! Thanks for watching!
This tutorial needs so many more views. 🔥
Glad you think so!
Thanks I’m going to try this tonight!
Let me know how it turns out!
Thank you for this!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks that’s so simple ! Cool 😎
Did not know it didn’t have to brew in the fridge. Probably an assumption I made. Been doing this for a few years now, but that’s why I watch these videos, you always ending up learning something or having something reinforced, which is encouraging.
Thanks for your awesome video!
You’re awesome! Thank you!

Thanks for the video!! I love the music, the way you talk, and your recipe:)))
Thanks!
Awesome vid- thank you 🙏🏻
Youre welcome - thanks for watching!
THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!
Thanks for watching!
I like this. This is nice and easy
Super easy. Although, it will be strong. If you try it and the flavor is too bold, make sure to add some water, or brew it for less time the next time around
Love this dude’s delivery
Thanks
So easy! Thanks 😊
Youre welcome!
Delightful video!!!
Thanks!
Great advice!
Thanks!
7 ounces of water = 1 ounce of coffee
14 = 2
21 = 3
28 = 4
32=5
At 32oz, youre good at 5 and can water it down if needed!
You’re a life saver lol. Me and math are not friends. 😑 or maybe I’m just a dingus.
No kidding, I love this video. I have searched sooooo many videos on how to make ice coffee and they are so full of “faff” rules and “Must do this or else Thanks so much for keeping it simple , real and not like if you don’t do it
Thanks for your ‘to the point’ video and on subject. I get frustrated when I go to a video that is supposed to show a simple idea turn into a history lesson. How long they’ve been making it, fancy gadgets, on and on. I think most people looking at cold brew have made hot brew for years. This is a winner for me.
Glad I could help!
Cant say the same thing about my newer videos though... Definitely changed by aiming to be entertaining 😂
Thanks for the info Mr. Beefcake, I'll make it tonight for tomorrow.
Thank god. A normal person who doesn't overcomplicate coffee. Hero.
😂😂 thanks
Thank you, sir!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the recipe my dude. I have the brew in the fridge right now
Let me know how it goes!
@@BlackTieKitchen Sorry for the delay but it came out a little too strong. I'll have to add a bit less grounds this time or steep for less time. My batch went a little over 24 hours. Good overall though, thank you.
Longer than 24 hours gets into very strong territory. Will also depend on the roast level of the beans. Try doing 12 hours - taste it, and go from there
I like your background music! Good choice!☺️
Thanks!
Thank you sir. More video please!
I got tons of video! They can get kinda weird tho 😂
Thank you!
Thank YOU for watching! Just make sure to check out some of my newer vids! 😁
Funny! I just bought a French press from Marshall’s because it was staring at me while I was in line for the cashier. It was less than $10, so, why not?! Great idea to use it for the cold brew now that is summertime! Thank you!
Cold brew is a fantastic summer drink! (especially in hot areas like Florida lol)
Nice simple explanation. I go with a cheaper espresso dark roast, 14 hours, and cut with some water and half and half. Best start to my day is my cold brew cup of coffee.
You really have to find the right timing, which is not going to be the same for every bean/roast combo. I know a company that only brews for 8 hours and the stuff is faaaaantastic!
Thank you! I love iced coffee, but never have enough time to stop at a coffee shop!
Be aware that iced coffee and cold brew are two different things! Iced coffee is hot coffee they add ice to whereas cold brew is coffee that's brewed without heat =)
love how he says ✨water✨
Jersey 🤷♂️😂
“Warter”...I knew it had to be back East! Lol
@@BlackTieKitchen "Wourder" :P
@@BlackTieKitchen you’re the only person I’ve ever heard say water like me, even some of my Jersey friends bust me for it lmao!!
It's the only way I know how to say water lol
Great video! I'm loving making cold brew coffee at home. Saving a ton of money! Can I request you make a video on making cold brew tea in a French Press. I drink coffee more often but like to mix it up with an iced green tea every now and again.
Ive actually been talking with some peope on cold brewing tea. I dont think it's as doable because certain teas require heat to really activate. For example, black tea needs to be brewed at 212°F whereas green tea would be burnt at that temp
I’d like that too
That’s awesome! So much less trouble! And I don’t have to have a gigantic space in my refrigerator free to do it!
Literally thank you so much for being clear about the ratio! 🐐 I bought a French press and I was going off recipes where they would say to use 4 oz coffee beans with 2 cups of water..... basically weighed it and it was more like a 1:1 ratio. 🙄 talk about fail lol
Metric for the win! 🤤
I wholeheartedly agree! I’m thrilled the grams are listed.
I love my French press - having a coffee right now ☕️ 🤓👍
Le café!
@@BlackTieKitchen J’adore mon café! 😍☕️🤓
I randomly wandered over ur video and I'm in love with it. I can't give u much but what I can do is subscribe so I did. Thank you
Thanks!
@@BlackTieKitchen thanks to u my friend. For making such quality content
You just prevented me from spending money on a cold brew pitcher since I have a french press. So thanks. Also, you're cute and fun to watch ;)
Thanks! I have a cold brew machine type thing myself - what those really do is simply save you a few minutes when cleaning up. Otherwise, theyre really not necessary! Thanks for watching 😁
Black Tie Kitchen ah man! I just bought a cold brew pitcher and I came here to see how to use it. Wish I would’ve seen your video before 😏
It will likely save you time in the long run! It's probably a lot easier to clean than a french press too!
ok but your voice is so soothing
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
Is this the best video on UA-cam? I think it’s a contender
Wow, that's.... A high achievement lol
@@BlackTieKitchen I mean let's be honest bro. Your video poses the title in the form of a question and then proceeds to get right into answering it without any fluff or extraneous stuff while also being humorous. And it's only 2-ish minutes long. Pretty great.
Lol dont watch my newer vids then 😅
Tried this today! Picked up a cheap grinder from Kmart, and it was super easy.
Awesome! Let me know how it turns out!
which one did you get? I'm planning to get one myself
@@BlackTieKitchen it worked out fantastic! I got three days worth of coffee out of 1 batch
@@hilarybbn2470 I got the one that's a bit more expensive, so I could change the how finely ground the coffee was.
Awesome!
What a cool bloke
thanks!
Love the video! Do you know what measurements you would use for already ground coffee?
It's the same. Especially if youre doing it by mass!
Nice carafe ;)
Those artistic ice panels resemble mine... that I make in a storage vessel on freezer rack as my built in ice maker has kicked the bucket. Is that your narrative, too?
🤫😄
Remeber: Before you let it brew for 12 hours, clean up.
Because, ants...
😂😂😉
The last thing you want is caffeinated ants.
Holy hell that'd be insaaaaaane
Thanks for not making something simple stupid complicated to get to the 10 minute mark. I'll try it and subscribe!
You're welcome! The unfortunate part is - as I try to make my videos shorter and more entertaining, the algorithm will basically punish me for it 😕
I have the same grinder!
It's a good one!
I was interested in making my own coldbrew and started looking at what Amazon has to offer. But I remembered I have a French press and couldn't it work the same? Through my search I found your video. Thank you I saved $50
It's a great way to make coldbrew, but if you get to the point where you want to make MORE, you might need to invest in one of those cold brew kits. Or... Get more french presses 😂
Next year I will be out of the house and won’t have the cold brew bottles my mom buys! 🤣 I figure I better start learning how to use my French press now so I don’t go broke in college
Yes! There are a couple of other methods too. If youre staying in a dorm, cold brew is the way to go - no fire risks!
Love your content! Can I leave it for 12 hours in the fridge? I don’t like ice 😬
You SHOULD leave it in the fridge once you remove the grounds. I prefer it without ice myself!
Well I tried your method and I definitely have noticed a lighter smoother cup of coffee. Plus doing it with a French press I don’t need to buy a whole new system of products to make this. This makes just enough for me and it’s not hard to make more for the week. I just need to adjust the water to concentrate ratio and I will be set. Thanks again for this video.
Thats awesome! Thanks for watching and sharing your experience 😄
Hey! thank you for such a great video! I was wondering what french press you use?
Can't say - it was a French Press I took from my mom and no longer have the box :(
@@BlackTieKitchen that's alright, thank you so much though 😊
I love the way this man says "Water" lol
I'm from the Northeast US 🤷♂️😅
@@BlackTieKitchen I was gonna say, this guy knows his Rita's. What coffee goes best with wourder ice? Haha
Haha 😂 that mango with vanilla custard 🤤🤤🤤
I want to buy that classic wide mouth bottle you store it in at the end. I forgot, what are they called specifically? Thanks.
It's called a carafe! I spent 20 minutes trying to remember the name a few weeks ago... and for some reason, my response didnt post my comment -_-
Look at friggin jacked Binging with Babish over here.
Lol 😂
I used to refrigerate mine does leaving it out not introduce anything bad after so long ?
You remind me of Andrew Rea (Binging With Babish) if he got buff!! Great vid!!
Haha, he's way more successful. He doesnt have the mustache I now have though 😂🥸
Honestly thought it was him at first glance 😆
Lol he's skinny 😅
Gonna go get a French press today. I have a grinder that can do course. How far do I push down on the poll into the coffee? Is it all the way down? Never used one before.
Go until it stops - dont push down hard, otherwise it will kick up more sediment than you'd care for!
I use 1.15 ratio and it is fine and delicious
That's the somewhat unfortunate thing about cold brew - it will take experimentation with grind, brew time, and ratios. Unlike pour over which is pretty straight forward!
would dark roast require less time on the counter?
Hello.. You explained how to make Cold Brew so simply and beautifully that I decided to do it right now..😌 If you don't mind, I have a question for you.. Should we put cold water or normal room temperature water on it? I didn't understand that..🙈🙃
either works, but cold seems to work a bit better. You just dont have to use hot water!
@@BlackTieKitchen Thank you for your reply and suggestion.. Have a great day..😌
I have a $7 Mini kitchen scale that I love. just ordered a $14 french press 1000 ml=4.2 cups. this video makes so much sense now. so now can easily do process without firing up electric coffee maker that often scalds coffee and seems to be wanting to commit "built-in obsolescence" suicide. Now if ya want to compete with a franchise that rhymes with cartrucks, I'm sure you can find some big bucks way to do this kind of brew...
Cold brew is just expensive to make - takes x amount of hours, then you have to store it, etc. There's a reason most places only have so much available that's freshly made! There are a bunch of tools on the market which make it easier to make cold brew, but the french press method works really well!
I did another tutorial because I could not find this one. Going to try this as it makes a lot at one time. Could you please put the measurements in the description box. Thank you.
This recipe uses a 7:1 water to coffee ratio.
In the video I used 4.5 cups (1050 mL) and 5.4oz (150g) of coffee =)
Thanks for watching!
If you buy pre grounded grounds how do you know if it’s coarse? I’ve been looking and I can’t seem to find any that say they’re coarse or fine.
Most pre-ground coffee is made for the standard drip coffee brewing machine, which is typically somewhere between fine and course. You should be fine using that coffee! However, since it IS a bit more fine grind, your french press may not stop it all (really depends). So I recommend you pour it out slowly once it's brewed so that you dont get the sludge ar the bottom.
Trying this today. Can you quantify the grind size you used on your grinder? My Breville grinder tells me coarse can be 56-60 grind size. At 56 grind using 150 grams of beans I ended up with just about 2 cups of ground. Does this sound right? Thx!
Thats about right. If you're using grams, just use double that for ml (or use the 300g of water).
This is the coffee I used: amzn.to/2uAFFL6 (Amazon Affiliate link)
Do you have a recommendation for the dilution ratio? I don't have ice so I'm planning to dilute it with water. I just have no idea on which dilution ratio to start with.
Add water until it tastes good to you!
Hi, I made some cold brew coffee using this method, but I made it with a ratio of 3/4 cup ground coffee to 3 cups of water. Is this intended to be a concentrate, or do I drink it as is? I don't usually drink cold brew, so I'm not sure what the strength is supposed to be. (I wanted to try cold brew because I read that it's less acidic and retains more flavor and health benefits.)
Thanks for your video!
Depends. I'd say - try it and if it's too strong, add some water! When it's cold brew, it's simple to play with it once it's brewed
Hi. I don’t have AC at home and the house tends to get hot when it’s summer especially right now. And my question is would that be a problem if I leave it in the counter for 12 hours or should I just put it inside the fridge?
It will be fine on the counter! There's no need to refrigerate it while it is brewing. Afterwards, if you leave it out though, I would drink it rather quickly as you do have the potential for mold. But, Im not a food scientist so take my advice with a grain of salt!
can you use already ground coffee like the ones they sell in stores? or does it have to be a specific coarseness for the flavour?
It can be coffee you buy from the stores, but would be best if you can grind it yourself!
You need to use coarse ground coffee for french presses. Cheers
What is this “equipment” you mention? I use a couple of bottles, a funnel and a filter.
More equipment that I use... But there are tons out there that are fancy
How big is that french press? I have a 1L and imma try making some but dunno the measurements if its the same as yours
It's about 1L. Focus on the ratio more than the actual measurements - then it wont matter the size
What if you don't have a scale and use already ground coffee? How many cups of coffee to water? We currently use an 1/8 C. Dry scoop to measure out coffee but can obviously switch.
You can still do the 7:1 ratio but it simply wont be as accurate with volume than as if with mass. So you can do 7:1 with whatever measurement you use! (Spoon, tin can, cup, etc)
Who is this charming man
Me. 😄
i didnt know it was this easy tf
Yup!
@@BlackTieKitchen I'm trying this now, let's see how it turns out tomorrow morning :))
What if I don't have a scale? I have a mini french press to make just 1 cup of coffee for myself usually. If I'm adding 1 cup of water (about 250ml), how many tablespoons of coffee beans would I need before I grind them?
The ratio is the same. If you dont have a scale, volume is a close substitute
Does it matter what temperature the water is? Or can I use room temp? Sorry I’m new to coffee lol
Room temperature is fine. You dont want to use hot water- so room temperature/cold works best!
How many scoops of coffee?
How many measuring Tablespoons?
10 tablespoons of coffee. so 10 scoops to 36 fl oz of water
If I want to add some milk, can I use any kind of milk, like fortified milk we normally drink before we sleep?
You can add whatever you'd like! ☺️
Does anyone have any recommendations on what type of French press to buy? Are some better than others for cold brew? Just wondering.
There's really no difference. I would aim for something that's easy to clean and possibly dishwasher safe!
Also make sure to buy one that can actually fit 4.5 cups of water is you want to follow this recipe. My first French press was too small 😂
What's the best cheap coffee grinder
Great question! I actually just did a live stream where we went over a bunch of these things: ua-cam.com/video/-GvibryuSXY/v-deo.html
I also have the items that I recommend listed here:
www.blacktiekitchen.com/coffee/why-you-hate-black-coffee-and-how-to-learn-to-love-it
Is there anyhting wrong with slightly plunging it so its completely submerged?
Nope!
Just a quick question. I have been watching videos and trying to find the best way to do this so what’s the difference between putting it in the fridge and leaving it out?
There really no significant difference (in my experience). Since it isnt brewing at a hot temperature, it wont matter much. There are some sous vide cold brew coffee techniques where it falls between regular hot water brewing and brewing at room temperature, but that's a different animal altogether.
To me, it really just depends if you have space in the fridge, on the counter, or are worried about it getting knocked over in either, but Im not a certified brewer, etc 😅
Black Tie Kitchen awesome thank you so much! Love your channel!!
Thanks!
I see with many cold brew recipes, they suggest diluting the cold brew with more water once it’s done steeping. Do you find that this recipe makes for a super strong coffee that needs to be diluted? or no?
Personally for me, i add a smidget of water. But I like my coffee strong and black. But it's very simple to add a little water until it's to your liking!
A lot of those recipes also are using 1:1 ratios to get a concentrate
One thing I've noticed using my French press is that there is a decent amount of sediment in the bottom when we get to the last serving of cold brew. Is there a way you recommend straining that out? I know it's safe to drink, but I was just trying to keep the texture to liquid. Lol
You can filter the last bit through a coffee filter or a pour over filter - just make sure to run some water through the filter beforehand to remove any paper taste. If you dont have any coffee filters, you can also use a paper towel to a lesser degree.
I'm not a fan of the sediment either, so I understand your pain!
@@BlackTieKitchen Perfect! Thanks for the response. I just got my brew from last night finished up and I used the coffee filter method. It's some mighty fine looking cold brew, now! Much appreciated!
Awesome!
ICED COFEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
In case you dont know (or anyone else who might read this) - there IS a difference between iced coffee and cold brew coffee! Iced coffee is just regular coffee brewed with hot water to which ice is added; cold brew is brewed with cold water!
Both are delicious though =)
@@BlackTieKitchen
yes, and I've done coffee (strong brew) over ice many times.
Thank you for responding!

Little confused about the ratio of 7:1. So if I’m using let’s say 60g of coffee grounds, then how much water should I be using? 420g of water?
Correct!
What coffee are you using and where do i purchase it?
Brown Bear Roastery - www.BrownBearBeans.com
Thanks for the method bro
But there's no product's in the website!!!
I have most of the stuff I use (including the coffee) here: www.blacktiekitchen.com/things-i-use
you mentioned it’ll last 2-3 days in fridge. and how long will it last at room temperature? tq
Depends. Probably 2 days or so!
If I use already grinded coffee, how much should I use for about 500ml of water? :)
71-72g of ground coffee. The mass wont change
Again what is with the coarse grind coffee? I use Folgers Black silk and it comes out great.
Coarse grind: easier to filter and less sediment
@@BlackTieKitchen thank you as you are the first to explain. I don't mind a bit of sediment in my coffee I spent 20 years in the military drinking coffee that still had all the grounds in it. Thanks again.
I can only imagine!
Can we add water again to the used grounds to get a few more cups?
You can, but it will be a very weak coffee!
