- This time-lapse video documents the installation of Sun Yuan & Peng Yu's "Can't Help Myself" (2016), a large-scale installation featuring a robotic arm. Learn more at www.guggenheim.org/tales.
"Can’t Help Myself" was commissioned for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s permanent collection as part of The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation Chinese Art Initiative. The second exhibition of the initiative, Tales of Our Time, is on view November 4, 2016-March 10, 2017.
I just want to tell the robot that I’m proud of him.
It can’t hear you. It’s not real
The Robot (in robot heaven): And you are???
Me too
@@afridgetoofar1818 well at least it puts some effort into cleaning it’s dying body
Same
This music is a completely different vibe from the exhibit itself in my mind. The robot is the polar opposite of scary and intense
The red stuff is a hydraulic leak that gets worse over time. At first the robot was able to contain the leak, and had time to entertain the audience, but as time wore on, it leaked too fast to contain, and the robot spent all of its hours retrieving leaked fluid. Finally it leaked too fast, and it died.
@@dalegreer3095 No it didn't, shut up
@@dalegreer3095 If I am correct, I do not think it died. It was probably unplugged, and if it did "die," then it was not because of the hydraulic fluid. The robot "thought" it needed the hydraulic fluid, so that's why it tried containing it.
This work is great! Very critical and technologically profound research and lots of symbolism!
It’s moving in pre programmed movements lol
@@paulbrown3302Doesn't change anything, in fact it kind of makes it more symbolic.
My favorite piece of modern art.
It's sad it broke
@@christianirwin967life
It was so lively when it was built. Now its slowing down and theres oil splattered everywhere
It already stopped,back in 2019
Aw really? Thats sad
@@LEMONBREAD208 very sad...
Where is it now?
@@hi_im_angelatrainor hmm. I’m not sure. I would assume they’re probably getting rid of it. They also could be possibly making a new one. Nobody really knows
I didn’t think AI would ever want to harm us until I seen this.
Why?
@@Nezlol because that robot desperately has to clean every day and people just watch instead of cleaning the tank for it. It always has to clean up it. It even once committed suicide or died down people say in 2019 and instead of can’t help myself it’s couldn’t help myself.
@@nightshade69420 its not cleaning its cage, its gathering its own blood in order to stay alive. The reason it died in 2019 is because it was too slow in gathering its own blood that it bled out.
@@nightshade69420 Robots loose steam after a while. That was just fake blood, it runs off electricity. Robots slow down after time and soon they just stop working.
@@nightshade69420 it’s supposed to be an art piece-
This piece alone made me deep dive into their work. Thank you
he couldn’t help himself, he still tried, he did everything, yet he still couldn’t help himself, i *can’t help myself*
...When you notice the difference Between 2016 and 2021 it looks so weak now
Didnt it stop working in 2019?
@@eden2108 yes
@@eden2108 ya it did
.
YeH :(
@@eden2108 yes it did but rn in 2021 its just Rust now
Okay but where is the timelapse?
it being built at the beginning
This work is great!
I was hoping of time laps of its life until death. Slowly losing more fluid each day
This robot looks like it murdered dozens of people and is. Ow cleaning up the mess
Its Glados.
nah its trying to keep it from killing itself
Guggenheim clickbait. Was expecting time-lapse of the entire life of the installation, not just installing it.
Art making people empathise with a machine = NOW THATS CLEVER
Like the Mars Rover?
This is not a time lapse of the robot's life. This is a tease, thanks for wasting my time
What's the name of the track in the background?
We can him a robot, it's fine, but we call it Bob, we cry
is that blood or water with food coloring
you don't understand, it's art....
Simpleton
yeah...sure....
You need to stop bashing on more modern art before you understand its actually meaning
yes, it is in fact art.
This is degenerate art
こわいいい(∩´﹏`∩)
One must imagine sisphus happy
why does this machine throw blood? or something like i want to know more about her
The machine is ran by fluid that looks like blood and it is trying to keep the fluid inside so it doesn't die. Sadly, it ended up dying in 2019. It is supposed to be based of people who are trying to help themselves but are failing.
@@vincentafton6701 ok thanks for explaining
@@vincentafton6701 actually it isn't trying to keep itself alive and it's not supposed to signify that either. It's just to signify how much control we give to AI and that we actually use it for control and we subject ourselves to the control of AI and what this has and can lead to in the future. It also says if you read the caption under the original video of it, it was about borders and keeping things in borders, the machine was designed to keep the fluids in a specific border, like the borders of the world, and on doing so the machine, hence the government's control that controls people locked in these borders. And the violence and blood shed that it causes in doing so is what the red liquid is to signify. The explanation that you've given is what some one on tik tok says about how they felt about the robot. I actually like that version myself cause it does seem like it's trying to keep itself alive and failing and it's kinda sad, but it's not the truth behind what the artist's message was. 😉
@@angelastone2803 Thank you for the information, I didn't know this was on Tiktok by the way
That the hydraulic oil it needs to pressure its systems to operate
For some reason I think of 'No Surprises' by Radiohead when I watch this
When*
@@hi_im_angelatrainor thanks
don't make the robot clean up blood :( poor thing
Thats sad.
It's bleeds just to clean
Bro Thats The Scooper From FNaF SL💀
That's blood??????? Or just rust...?! That's scary....
Not to be pedantic, but this isn't a timelapse.
Poor Robot
Unfortunately, the robot has had his wages garnished.
If we did this on a human we would care but it’s a robot so people think it has not feelings
What are you on about?
It doesn't
Lmaooo
Більш глибокого сенсу я вже не побачу у витворі мистецтва
Why is it cleaning blood? What happened?
It's hydraulic fluid. The robot is built with a leak and programmed to wipe the fluid back to its base where it goes back into its system. When all the fluid is wiped up, the robot has time to entertain people viewing. The leak gets worse over time, so the robot spends more and more of its time retrieving fluid. Eventually the fluid leaks too fast for the robot to keep up, and it dies.
It’s not blood it’s just this dark red liquid type stuff
🥲
Should've used Fanuc R2000iC 125L those bad boys run forever.
This is so sad.

Creepy thing! Would really like to see different variations with more colors then only blood....
It's not a fucking Kitchenaid stand mixer. “I'll take two! Does it come in yellow?”
@@e32b61 omfg😰😂
it's an art piece in one of the most important museums in the world, you can't be like "I don't like this, I want it in blue :
The symbolism of the art piece hits hardest when it's cleaning up blood.
uhhhh, thats not really the point is it... and "creepy" ... how about "important" the only creepy thing is humans inability to understand conceptual art.
É GdaSxry
It reminds me of our goverments haha
'art'.
yes art.
You might not understand, but it's basically what trauma / mental disorders make you feel.
You try your hardest to clean it up, yet you can never actually clean it up.
No matter how hard you try to get rid of it, it is always there.
