"In Sun Yuan and Peng Yu’s 'Can’t Help Myself', an industrial robot turns and flexes restlessly, programmed to ensure that a thick, deep red liquid stays within a predetermined area. Part of the the international art exhibition 'May You Live in Interesting Times', curated by Ralph Rugoff for the 2019 Venice Art Biennale, the robot is placed within a transparent ‘cage’, almost like a creature captured and put on display."

Its taking deep breaths, stretching because of the pain, easily getting tired, for example only doing 2 sweeps before stopping, and in the end, shaking its head before throwing its head back in frustration. How are you guys interpreting the motions? I'd love to see the different artistic perspectives.

in my perspective, this is doing others moviments for show for the people around that its 'good', not really caring, but at the same time are frustrated about cant do anything and nobody perceive (sorry my bad english, im still learning :) )

So sad. It's a robot yes,, but if you have experienced it anytime in your life , by seeing someone else struggle (a friend, family, a parent) you can understand it and feel it even more. 🥺 Hugs to anyone who has experienced this.. and we all will someday in the end. :(

1:30 it is frantically flailing and screaming for us to see that it needs help, but can only do so silently, no one outside of his room will help him. So he goes back to desperately trying to save himself, to little avail.
    As everyone outside watches.

I think this interpretation could be switched from this robot to a human but being in like quicksand instead, and no one there to help you out, trying every second and everyday to keep your head up so it doesnt go under. Could be anything from depression, anxiety, real life happenings, working yourself all your life to death, discovering that you will eventually go under. :(

Uh I think it means, at the year of 2016,the robot was a new robot that was made, its job was to sweep the liquid inside of the glass, when it was first made, it wasnt broken and it was happily dancing and sweeping, at the year of 2019,the robot looks like it was getting tired of sweeping and you could hear a little screaming when it takes a break from sweeping, almost looking like it needs help, but at the late of 2019's,the robot stop working, as if it's need oil to live, like humans, but instead humans died forever. The robot represent even if we are happy at our job and when we are tired of sweeping, we can't do anything by ourselves. Correct me if I wrote any wrong information

@@lastchanc3stars When I get older, I wish to see it. Not functioning. I don't mean that in a mean way and I don't like seeing others in bad condition.. but I find the robot and its movements scary. That robot can hit you any moment, and it definitely is not calming knowing that. If I don't get to see it, I want.. to make my own mini version.. powered by an AI so I trick myself into thinking the robot has feelings.

“I can’t help myself” the machine is trying to clean up the mess by itself but it’s obvious not working so then the machine shows panicking motions but keeps trying to clean up the mess only to be failing over and over again. Much like if u have problems in your own life that you try to fix by yourself but just can’t fix it. Anxiety, panicking, helplessness, spiraling all alone

    • @cherrycookiebee8969

@CHUCKY bullshit. If you knew the artist you'd know that art is subjective and meanings differ for different beholders. Also, you'd know it's constantly leaking hydraulic fluid and trying to save it's own functionality, not 'cleaning a mess'. Lying on the internet for attention?

Sun Yuan & Peng Yu are known for using dark humor to address contentious topics, and the robot’s endless, repetitive dance presents an absurd, Sisyphean view of contemporary issues surrounding migration and sovereignty. However, the bloodstain-like marks that accumulate around it evoke the violence that results from surveilling and guarding border zones. Such visceral associations call attention to the consequences of authoritarianism guided by certain political agendas that seek to draw more borders between places and cultures and to the increasing use of technology to monitor our environment.
