The Rise Of Premium Economy & Why Some Airlines Have Abandoned First Class

  • These days, the interior of a commercial aircraft operated by a full-service network carrier like United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, or American Airlines looks very different from what it did thirty years ago. The economy cabin might look relatively the same, although technological upgrades like modern seatback televisions and in-seat power outlets may make the passenger experience somewhat more enjoyable. Across the board, however, the lowest-end cabin configuration is not that different.
    Towards the front of the aircraft, however, is where things really get interesting and where a stark contrast can be seen between the present and the past.

    Modern Premium Economy is what Business class used to be like 30 years ago, but at a far lower price (adjusting for inflation). So it's no wonder that if people were willing to pay thousands for it then, people are going to be wanting to pay a few hundred £/$/€ more than an economy fare for it now.
    In many respects business class has become the new First class, with lie flat seats, private suites and luxury catering, and so PE has replaced the Business class offering of the 90s (bigger seat, more recline, better food).

    First class gets dropped because quite a few corporate travel policies do not allow bookings in first class. However, bookings in business class are generally allowed for long haul flights. Airlines realized this and changed their products to adapt to the corporate travel market.

    As a very tall person, premium economy is a must on any flight longer than 4-5 hours. I have flown EVA PE and on the 777s the hard product is really showing their age. The food also isn't any better then economy. In 2022 the airline let you preorder a business class meal out of Taiwan for a small fee. Too bad they didn't continue the program.

    I've flown premium economy a few times. For a larger, taller person, it's like economy is for a smaller person.
    There was a trend for business seats to be sloping and 2 together. I would bring them back as a long haul premium economy.

    I flew FC on Qantas 20 years ago. No privacy at all. Bigger seat, better food and all the booze you wanted. That was it. It was lower than BC today. I saw the flight attendant on a 7 hour flight about 2 times, he didn't give a sh!t.

    Premium Economy is originally Regional First Class
    Airlines: "if Regional First Class seat works, why we should serve First Class Suite with empty"

  • @eamonahern7495
    @eamonahern7495 Місяць тому +3

    I think it depends on the demand for the product in the market the airline is in. The likes of Emirates and British Airways connect the world whereas an airline like Aer Lingus wouldn't have the capacity to offer 4 classes to a completely worldwide customer base.

    I’m yet to be convinced by premium economy. Honestly very little difference to justify the higher price. Just better interior with a little bit more space which you could get if got pay a bit more for a better seat anyway. I’d much rather save the money to go for a business class seat when I want it the most. I do think the gulf carriers like Qatar have changed the game re standards for business class. Love the Q suite

    I'm in the fortunate position of being able to afford business class for the times we fly long haul. Looked at PE but can't put up with a reclined seat in front of me. I think Air France tried a shell style seat in PE but now have reclineable seats. Obviously, recline is not as bad as in economy but still too intrusive. The other benefits of business class over PE such as departing and arrival lounges and chauffeur travel to the airport make for a more enjoyable experience in the modern era of plane travel. Just my opinion.

    It's interesting that on short haul companies like Air Canada have a business class (737, A320, etc) that is midway between long haul business and PE. Kind of feel short changed on those flights lol

      @briankenney1433 Місяць тому

      What do you mean by midway? Their Business class is the same premium economy seat in the WB except the 737 and 220 are slightly skinnier due to the fuselage width

      @briankenney1433 A 777, 787, 330 have pods and lie flats. The PE on those recline and are 2/4/2.
      737 are the same seats as wide body PE in 2/2 with a leg rest that PE does not have to allow for 30 degree pitch but not flat. The Airbus Business is equivalent to Westjet Plus seats but better service and frankly outdated imo.

    I like Premium Economy very much because it has a more spacious seating configuration, better seat amenities, earlier boarding, better in-flight meals, and more miles and points, all at an affordable price. Also, I usually travel with a companion, and most widebody aircraft operators are transitioning from the 2-3-2 and 2-4-2 configurations in Economy Class into a 3-3-3 layout to maximize revenue and capacity without sacrificing passenger comfort.

    • @thyip6167
      @thyip6167 14 днів тому

      Premium Economy seats are commonly configured in a 2-3-2 or 2-4-2 configuration, which are suitable for passengers traveling with a companion. Also, these seats have larger entertainment screens, footrest or legrest, cocktail tables, and a universal power outlet.

    • @thyip6167
      @thyip6167 14 днів тому

      Economy Class seats are usually configured with a 3-3-3 or 3-4-3 layout, which are only suitable for passengers traveling with two or more companions. Also, these seats typically offers USB ports as a sole charging solution.

    But is this new type of Business Class smaller (Take up smaller space in the cabin) than what first class used to be? Maybe it is just a change in name? Have the total number of seats in the same plane model increased?

    • @damcoentertainment3956
      @damcoentertainment3956 Місяць тому

      The thing is, most airlines remove first class in their widebodies, then they add these new business class suites and premium economy recliners and finally remove legroom from economy class. That's how it works.

    Premium economy is long haul is worth the upgrade - especially if you are an older traveller. When I travel with my wife (I always fly economy) we like the A330 because of the seating configuration (2-4-2) - we are both willing to pay extra for more leg roon and shoulder room - it makes a huge difference after an 8+ hour flight!

    As I look at those fancy seats, I cannot see how they would manage someone with a disability. If they are not inclusive, they are not my choice of airline. Airlines have been given a free pass for to many years and its time they step up.
