I know this is a older thread but I'm wondering if you can tell me why my MX8 keeps taking out the drive on the right side facing the lid of the cleaner. It takes the drive out within a month of installing a new one.
I wonder if by removal of both directional control units and setting them both in neutral position and installing them back the time of pool cleaner going straight can be drastically increased? The worst scenario can be if one unit is in neutral and the other is right in the middle of directional drive. Then you get bad timing and pool cleaner is not going string often or long enough but tends to turn around in stationary position.
Thanks so much! This information is hard to find.

Would be nice if we can buy the individual bevel gears. Would save us from throwing away so many serviceable parts. A designed weak point?
They are easy to 3D print, find somewhere you can get a cheap print, or ask a friend with a printer.
Where's the washer trick?
