- A new baby in the chimpanzee enclosure has caused tensions amongst the alpha females - but their harmonious response shocks zoo keepers
The chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes), also known simply as chimp, is a species of great ape native to the forest and savannah of tropical Africa. It has four confirmed subspecies and a fifth proposed subspecies. The chimpanzee and the closely related bonobo are classified in the genus Pan. Evidence from fossils and DNA sequencing shows that Pan is a sister taxon to the human lineage and is humans' closest living relative. The chimpanzee is covered in coarse black hair, but has a bare face, fingers, toes, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet. It is larger and more robust than the bonobo, weighing 40-70 kg (88-154 lb) for males and 27-50 kg (60-110 lb) for females and standing 120 to 150 cm (3 ft 11 in to 4 ft 11 in).
From The Secret Life of the Zoo: This series gives viewers behind the scenes access to Chester Zoo's 21,000 animals and the people who work there. The zoo's keepers are interviewed in each episode about the various animals and incidents, whether it's orangutans escaping their enclosure or tigers getting into scraps.

That was an amazing, tense video. ZeeZee behavior was so unexpected and makes you believe that empathy is a part of intelligent beings.
R ead DeWaal's "Mama's Last Hug"
ZeeZee was so clever and brave, she understood it was best for the group to trust others with the baby to dissolve tensions. What an incredible move!
That was wonderful. The older chimp has never had a baby and zeezee knows this. They do have compassion for each other in their troop.
Did anyone else see how Tina moved ZeeZee’s arm so that she could hold Stevie’s hand🥺 (5:20)
It's great to see how the group all bonded and everything turned out fine. Stevie is a wonderful young chimpanzee.
She is so full of mischief and is always quick to show off. We have loved watching her growing up these last couple
of years, especially now she has Annie and Toyah to play with.
Wow its ape tracker hi!
That's crazy. It's like zeze knew pattie was interested in her baby so she seen if she wanted to babysit for a little while and then they had to take the baby back. But either way, that's beautiful for a mother to give another older female chimp the chance to see what it's like to hold a baby. Very awesome and interesting.
Now if everyone would do that to people who want babies but can’t have any for reasons including single never married people
Zeezee was like: hey patty want to help me prank carlos
I think the dynamics among chimps being held in captivity may be changing over time, compared to chimps in the wild. Being together in close proximity, over time, maybe gave Patti and Zeezee a closeness although they are unrelated genetically.
It is 100% possible for chimps raised in captivity to form bonds to chimps who they aren’t related to. Especially if they were taken from their mother and raised alongside humans.
I say it’s because they don’t have to worry about survival
The chimps still have this great bond, Patti now helps care for ZeeZee's latest baby Jeff.
Omg! How sweet! This started my day nicely
Amazing nature🌿🍃 and animals, just amazing
Isn't this the 3rd time they have posted this same clip..
Apes are smart, and form social bonds.
I don't consider it impossible the baby was handed over to someone that hasn't had one out of kindness.
Likes us, chimps are possible of horrible things, so why not kindness?
Obviously trust is a thing they feel.
Aww that's sad. It seems like pattie just wanted to see what it was like to have a baby for a little while. I wish she could have had her own. Poor girl.
So glad that ended well.
damned,better than a Disney movie.
Chimps are beautiful
Thanks for sharing; hope to see more 👍
I swear I have seen this video before a couple years ago. This is the second time this has been uploaded.
Wow, that was good to watch. Tense. I would have liked to see how it was resolved.
Carlos you my boi fr ily big dawg.
Wow
Merci! Delicious...
Mercy 🙏🏾😇
I think yall need alot of Mace
Pattie doesn’t want to give back the baby to Zee Zee. Pattie wants to keep it and Zee Zee told her NO SHE CANT HAVE HER BABY, IT SEEMS LIKE CARLOS IS THERE TO BACK ZEE ZEE UP.
What does the grey long hair guy do?
See even chimps can work things out!
??
How many times their gonna upload the same video ?
we have seen that already - why are you repeating the same stories ?
I'd before watched this episode
Hadn't I??
This is an old video again.🤔
Mabey ZeeZee gave pattie her baby to babysit 🤔🤔
Wheres the new videos? This is great but it's old news.
Please activate the translation to all languages of the world so that subtitles can provide a better understanding for everyone. Thanks👍
Nature is unsure surprise and other stuff and more creepy stuff and more events and stories and different chapter and character and people who Care and family is weary and more creepy 😭😔 so listen and learn more information on the ending 😮
The monkey gods... ? Have faith
Interesting documentary... to much human apprereances.
If the baby's life was really at risk I wonder why a dart gun isn't an option? Or do they just have a policy that if the baby dies, that's nature? Which I can certainly understand. You can not keep dart gunning them every time someone is in danger, they are wild animals. But maybe in rare exceptional circumstances like this.
I guess they are bored which might explain their unusual behaviour.
Cause they are a colony and eventually they must sort it out themselves
they would learn from those experiences
@@Djellowman - Learn not to steal each other babies from a dart? Yes, that would be the point. If you kill or put babies at risk you get a dart. I'm not even advocating just wondering why not if it would say its life?
Also if the animal gets a dart they could also fall on the baby and squish them
They would have to dart all of them. Chimpanzees are incredibly dangerous when tensions are high. They could kill a grown man the moment he stepped into their enclosure. If they are an established colony, if they misinterpret keepers going in to their enclosure and approaching one of their troop members, that would be a very dangerous situation.
pattie really needs to get d- *redacted*
3:19
You could tranq Patty from afar if she kept holding the baby for too long.
Takes too long and traumatizes the chimp further.
That's ridiculous
Bull! Pattie isn't immune to the sting of a pellet rifle. A single pump aimed at a thigh! Yow!😮
WHY DON'T THE KEEPERS STEP IN AND DO SOMETHING???!!! I GET THE WHOLE LET THEM WORK IT OUT!!!!,,,, BUT SOMETIMES THE KEEPERS NEED TO STEP IN FOR THE BABIES SAKE!!!🙄
Sometimes you need to understand your opinion is based on emotion and not reality and facts. They know what they are doing, you simply don't
So much drama and editorializing for nothing...it's all for views and money. These "keepers" could not care less...
Smh🙄
@@chloeshann8142 Go ahead....shake it all you want...if you believe the BS you are watching then you have more problems than anyone here can help you with...
I was hoping they were gonna tear it apart that would've been awesome!
I worry that someone like you might have children
😖💔 oh God!!! Smh I've seen monkeys do this crap before n I really can't stand it!! The anguish, torture and helplessness associated w this just sucks terribly
Smh🙄
Its sad that the keepers who take care of them their ENTIRE lives can't enter the enclosure without being killed. I understand how chimps are and I suppose its a good thing they don't want humans around? If you look at something like monkey world, its much, much different.
