Thanks for the knowledge. I just finished doing ground control for edc but I really am more into the stage hand work behind it. If at all possible I’m gonna be doing it next year and this is just what I need to know.

So I keep being told by established folk that I need a C-wrench (Westcott) and that's about it. I have a total of four gigs under my belt, I am as green as they come. But I have already made a list of everything that I would have used had it been on me at gigs.
    - Pliers/snips (to cut tie wraps)
    - Tiny flashlight (I won't use the one on my phone, not gonna kill my phone or its battery)
    - Helmet (don't have to wear it all the time, but after a dude had a concussion on the last job from falling off a badly lit stage, I will keep it on me and use as needed)
    - Electrician's tape (best to have your own roll and to have it hang off your body for easy access)
    - Mallet (never enough of those around)
    - Voltage tester
    - Gloves
    - Tiny ceramic blade cutter (for tape, not a fan of unnecessary effort)
And I know this is still incomplete. You don't have to keep all of this around your waist (yes, I assume you do have a tool belt with at least a small pouch on it that can hold three tools), but if you can keep the helmet, mallet and flashlight in your backpack, they WILL come in handy.

What kind of gigs do you work out of where?
I work Broadway plays, conventions and conferences, and school rigging out of San Antonio.
Still a lot to learn before I can test for my card, but it's super duper chill.
Yeah yeah, loading and unloading trucks is a royal b1tch,but almost everything else is super chill.

I completely agree with a compact tool belt that only holds the essentials, and keeping the rest of your gear in your backpack. When you are setting up but especially tearing down Stagelines, you need to crawl a lot in unlit confined spaces (a head lamp is super useful). Bulky toolbelts are a hindrance in that case.
I think a head lamp is more useful than a flashlight. You can hang a head lamp in a convenient spot, and you can keep your hands free when using it on you, but you can still use it as a regular flashlight. I also have a small but powerful magnetic LED light with hooks on it, that also seems to be a better option.

What I carry on me depends on the gig and what department I’m working in. Most of the time, I keep it at bare minimum: C-wrench, maglite, and a small knife or multi tool. Everything else stays in a bag nearby. I don’t want anything extra on me if I have to climb, or crawl.

I saw another video where the guy was considering a chest pouch for those very reasons...Also have a look at the Toughbuilt Clip-Tech system of tool belts and pouches...Basically it allows you to put a tool pouch on a belt and also remove it very easy...There are lots of different pouches to choice from so i am sure there must be some that would be suitable...

Sweet video, could you put links to your favorite tools in the description? It can be hard to find them online.
Also what is your tool belt?

Idk if it’s a culture thing or a practicality thing but every stagehand (including me) I’ve ever seen has an adjustable wrench on a tether, and a knife that may or may not be legal.

I was surprised the C wrenched wasn't tethered either, but perhaps they tether it if they know they are going to be working at height?

A safety on your C wrench is always handy when you're 40 feet in the air and the handle slips out of your sweaty hand. You can just pull the wrench back up by the line instead of having to climb down to get your wrench

@@gregorycerven3484 Hello. Yes, what a pain in the behind, & on the off chance you drop your wrench & hit someone, points will be deducted, & if you really f*&%$ up, a personal injury law suit will be added to the bother of climbing down to retrieve it.

@@peterevans8194 Hello. Yup, me also. How about clip, clip it’s on your tether, clip its free to use, lent some dumby that didn’t bring their own, or throw at some annoying person.
