I am an audio engineering student in the Denver area and I am looking for opportunities working as a stagehand at concerts. How can I find part time opportunities to volunteer or work at these concerts?
volunteer in a dog shelter, this is a job, get payed , stop this attitude , they're not gonna call you next time if there is gonna be other people willing to work for free or less money than you, the intention is good but the result is bad.
So, rather than simply berate you as the other guy did, let me inform you about your options: 1. If you are trying to be an audio engineer first, then I'd check in with Brown Note Productions out in Thorton, CO. They can sometime have a reputation, but they have all the best gear and get most of the big gig, especially for concerts. Don't expect to get onto a board anytime soon, and if you don't like it there, don't stick around so long that you waste your time. 2. If you're wanting some experience but are able to take the pay cut, check out work with some of the smaller production companies in the area. Mighty Fine Productions, Kaleidoscope Productions, and many other exist. There are TONS of shows and companies to cut your teeth. Again, no guarantees for mixing time, but still a chance for experience and exposure. 3. Same as #2, many small or local venues such as the Aurora Fox Theatre could be interested in working with you. Live Nation and AEG are also companies to considers, too. Same point about no guarantees to mixing. 4. If you're looking for Stagehand work as a whole, then the options are everything I've listened and a few more: Rhino Productions and IATSE Local 7 Union. They are competitors, and I recommend that you don't EVER tell Rhino that you even THOUGHT about union work, but they are place/people to check out. Rhino has 2 jobs: Stagehand and Rigger. That's it. No touching an audio console basically ever. Local 7 has SOME opportunities for mixing, but you're not going to be mixing an bands or musicals. 5. As a stagehand, you're only ever going to set up the sound board for the road crews, and only certain tiers of Local 7 hands will ever mix in AV Corporate gigs. As a rule of thumb, try not to work for free, but always be willing to listen and learn. If you ever wish to ask any further questions, I live IN Denver, and I have a decent lay of the land of the area for only having lived here for 1 year. Best of luck my friend. - The Stagehand/Audio Engineer that Decided to Actually Answer Your Question.
...what about pressing the little red button?
Enjoy!
Such a simple but great effect
I was a stagehand in the 80's and 90's in California and Alabama.....worked 100's of events, from concerts to corporate stuff, theatre and trade shows.....I sometimes miss that work
It's weird how amazed we are when famous people are nice

Not a stage hand but an AV technician
This was really cool to see. To much stuff goes into doing stage work that this video kinda opened my eyes to it all. Very informative, looking forward to getting into stage work so this is all helpful.
Thanks for the knowledge. I just finished doing ground control for edc but I really am more into the stage hand work behind it. If at all possible I’m gonna be doing it next year and this is just what I need to know.
i check disrespectful techs. I am one of the most skilled riggers in the industry, and i will not tolerate this behavior
Great Job, Tony!!
This is an extremely informative, concise, and accurate way to show how this work really is. Badass!!!
Letting these roadies think that they can treat us like garbage for no reason isn't good advice. With this advice, they will continue their inappropriate behavior onto the next gig. Ergo snowball effect. Better advice might be towards the tour. Treat stagehands like they are there to help you, and also realize that they have never seen your rig or load- in or load-out before. Good attitudes equal good attitudes and good outcomes When roadies focus on communication and have an artinuary in place, load ins and outs are completely organized with basically no issues and all goes well It is the job of a roadie to be communicative organized and focused. People are only as good as their leaders Treat stagehands with a little bit of dignity. We are an underrated gear in the industry and you need us more than you think We're tired too, so fuck of with the attitudes
I hear ya but our guy here is just letting us know how to deal these things internally, and he's 100% correct. You are right on how to correct the overall issue but unfortunately that is completely out of our control, we can only control how we react.
I am jealous. Wish i were you. Good for you. 😊

Bro these vids are super helpful.
Pretty cool
Cool to know, im a big fan of cage the elephant. It's nice hearing that he is so cool to people
I’m sure that Stevie is a good person. Plus with great manners just bc she’s famous still remains humble. You’ll have that memory forever! Trading places?I’ve loved her since I was 16. Now I’m in my 60s😊😊❤❤
Thank you for being so kind to Stevie!
Always interested in the back scenes. Excellent video.
No one wants a hairy hippie at a corporate event!
😜 *Promosm*
Great video!
Stevie's the best! 😊❤️
We know they are people just like we are but their famous. I get amazed when I get to speak to the local people that do the news. I always call them "Our local celebrity". This is so great to hear a famous person had some manners. A lot of them think they are so much better than the average people.
Love this!
❤
In for 10 still learning. I would also argue be willing to teach. Sometimes us old salty techs get tired and stressed and pissy, but the newbs can't learn if we don't teach.
So technically on your raceway they aren't dimmers, those are circuits that can be either dimmers (for conventional fixtures) or relays ( for LED instruments) But I'm just being a pedant.
I have that same shirt 🤘
Awesome tips, great channel. Subscribed!
What I carry on me depends on the gig and what department I’m working in. Most of the time, I keep it at bare minimum: C-wrench, maglite, and a small knife or multi tool. Everything else stays in a bag nearby. I don’t want anything extra on me if I have to climb, or crawl.
I saw another video where the guy was considering a chest pouch for those very reasons...Also have a look at the Toughbuilt Clip-Tech system of tool belts and pouches...Basically it allows you to put a tool pouch on a belt and also remove it very easy...There are lots of different pouches to choice from so i am sure there must be some that would be suitable...
Idk if it’s a culture thing or a practicality thing but every stagehand (including me) I’ve ever seen has an adjustable wrench on a tether, and a knife that may or may not be legal.
I was surprised the C wrenched wasn't tethered either, but perhaps they tether it if they know they are going to be working at height?
A safety on your C wrench is always handy when you're 40 feet in the air and the handle slips out of your sweaty hand. You can just pull the wrench back up by the line instead of having to climb down to get your wrench
@@gregorycerven3484 Hello. Yes, what a pain in the behind, & on the off chance you drop your wrench & hit someone, points will be deducted, & if you really f*&%$ up, a personal injury law suit will be added to the bother of climbing down to retrieve it.
@@peterevans8194 Hello. Yup, me also. How about clip, clip it’s on your tether, clip its free to use, lent some dumby that didn’t bring their own, or throw at some annoying person.
If you can get one,a combination ratchet of13mm,15mm,17mm and 19mm,they're really useful.
The Yanks will melt down if they have to think in metric! 😂
Hello. Excellent suggestion.
Good vid' Just the basics' I keep a crescent and a knife on me at all times' The rest in my backpack.
Last week October 22, 2023 i was doing show call for the When We Were Young Music Festival. I was part of Blink 182 crew. One of tte production guys hands me a blower to clean stage 2 of confetti. Now one of Blink 182 techs was impressed with me he gave me a pair of Travis barker drum sticks. Money can't buy this.
I am based in Vegas. Vegas has busy. What i love about our industry is no day is exactly the same
Idk I worked in a major city spent a few years doing music festivals year round got fed up with the industry switched to telecom then was like fuck telecom and fell back into staging but on the tech side of things. For me it all blended together and became the same shit everyday. My life started to feel like an endless set up show call and load out. Did everything from stagehand to rigging cam op spot op audio lighting and video tech sometimes all three on same gigs. Did corporate festivals stadiums arenas small stuff…. It all blended together. I loved it at first especially rigging. Festivals were cool at first. Now I can’t even go to a festival or a big show even for fun I’m fucking over it.
Bro you are so right when you say our job is fun
I completely agree with a compact tool belt that only holds the essentials, and keeping the rest of your gear in your backpack. When you are setting up but especially tearing down Stagelines, you need to crawl a lot in unlit confined spaces (a head lamp is super useful). Bulky toolbelts are a hindrance in that case. I think a head lamp is more useful than a flashlight. You can hang a head lamp in a convenient spot, and you can keep your hands free when using it on you, but you can still use it as a regular flashlight. I also have a small but powerful magnetic LED light with hooks on it, that also seems to be a better option.
So I keep being told by established folk that I need a C-wrench (Westcott) and that's about it. I have a total of four gigs under my belt, I am as green as they come. But I have already made a list of everything that I would have used had it been on me at gigs. - Pliers/snips (to cut tie wraps) - Tiny flashlight (I won't use the one on my phone, not gonna kill my phone or its battery) - Helmet (don't have to wear it all the time, but after a dude had a concussion on the last job from falling off a badly lit stage, I will keep it on me and use as needed) - Electrician's tape (best to have your own roll and to have it hang off your body for easy access) - Mallet (never enough of those around) - Voltage tester - Gloves - Tiny ceramic blade cutter (for tape, not a fan of unnecessary effort) And I know this is still incomplete. You don't have to keep all of this around your waist (yes, I assume you do have a tool belt with at least a small pouch on it that can hold three tools), but if you can keep the helmet, mallet and flashlight in your backpack, they WILL come in handy.
What kind of gigs do you work out of where? I work Broadway plays, conventions and conferences, and school rigging out of San Antonio. Still a lot to learn before I can test for my card, but it's super duper chill. Yeah yeah, loading and unloading trucks is a royal b1tch,but almost everything else is super chill.
Sweet video, could you put links to your favorite tools in the description? It can be hard to find them online. Also what is your tool belt?
