Man being in the industry for 9+ years and training many others just starting in the industry. Your video is absolutely spot on!!!! This video I personally think should be a required orientation video. As a starting off Stage Hand then also the house LD on top of that, the descriptions you said of audio, lighting, and video guys is absolutely 100% spot on. And the biggest truth is the thick skin!!!! It can be an extremely stressful environment especially when things had been tested and right before showtime it magicaly malfunctions, and more times than not even when calm or during some down time offensive language is used, even in normal conversation.

Thanks Ryan. I'm on the musician side of things and I watch and read these types of vids/blogs to know what I can do to make the lives easier for the people I work with. And I've always believed in the "clean up after yourself" rule. Especially when you're doing multiple act shows. I've wandered around a stage while the next band is getting set up only to remove empty glasses and bottles, set lists, crumpled gaff tape, etc from my bandmates. And they (bandmates) get the evil-eye afterwards. 10 seconds. That's all it takes. Clean up after yourself. Sheesh.

Thank you for this! Just got my first event gig coming up next week. Really excited. I have some labor experience but I'm sure the high stress pacing will take time to adapt to.

Good basics. It's amazing how many experienced hands don't know or follow the basics.

Make sure you get a full wrap on the barrel of the ratchet strap when tightening down. If you don’t, it may come loose.

I really don't understand why people think that going in with a ball busting attitude is going to result in them having a good day. If I had a stressful load in ahead of me, I would be nice and understanding! Crazy. So much sexism and anti-safety old school thinking and so much unnecessary gruffness. Thanks for showing the great tip on measuring voltage of ground to neutral! I work most in the theatre and that is very useful to think about.

Along with safety, never let a case go at the back of the truck when loading. Make sure someone sees it coming or has hands on it. It's not fun getting a case hitting you from behind.

Yes excellent tip leave it as you found it or better. Adam savage has a video where he talks about MythBusters coming into locations and trying to do this and even in one case fixing a fence. What was the outcome they were allowed to come back to a lot of places.
And then there's leave no trace of your scout.
I was at a venue and during my electrical check I found an extension cord that had reversed polarity it took me to maybe two minutes to fix it but now I know it's fixed for the next guy or me.

We all need to adopt a policy of only calling good guys who actually want to be there.
There’s too many lazy guys who try to dodge duties

Tip number 8: don't litter in your storage room! All those pieces of paper with numbers on them can be quite annoying.

All good stuff - but you missed out one vital bit. If you don't know how to thread a ratchet tie, you're probably not going to know how to LOOSEN ihe ratchet when the time comes. That's really embarrassing. (And yes, I was that soldier !) 🙂

Get a TRMS Clamp meter. The clamp allows you to measure amperage on each leg of cheap distros.
