I'm studying technician and hope to get my license next month, I have to say, other than emergency communications, this excites me the most about HAM. Thanks for the video.
Randy, what a great video. I'm not a licensed ham, but my father bought a Kenwood R2000 when I was a teenager, and really got into listening. I still have the receiver, and recently got it out, dusted it off and have been toying around with it. I downloaded Digipan, and it works great on my Vista machine. I guess it's about time for me to study up and work on getting licensed. Thanks for all the great videos. -Bob
I watched this video and had PSK 31 running in just a few minutes. WHAT FUN!! As I already have Ham Radio Deluxe, I used that instead of Digipan. I did this after sunset so no reception on 20 meters but I found alot on 80...It also surprised me how I could get such great reception here in the Southern Tier of NY from VE stations in western Canada to short hop stations from Ohio and they all were running 30 watts or less. Thanks for this video Randy. Great job! 73 de KB2RMC
Hey, Randy! What a great video! I'm not a licensed ham, but my father bought a Kenwood R-2000 when I was a teenager and really got into listening. I still have the receiver to this day and recently got it out, dusted it off and started playing around with it again. I downloaded digipan, installed it on my vista machine, and it works great. I think it's about time for me study up and get licensed. Thanks for all the great videos. -Bob
Thanks Randy for the super intro to PSK! A fun story for you: Last fall in my first week tech school comm/radio lab we set up and ran Digipan on each student's laptop. Before we could get to plugging into our Warbler radios, the students were having a riot PSKing via audio across the classroom! - PSK headache #31 :) They had about 6 QSOs going at once. So go ahead all and try PC to PC PSK via open audio - you will be suprised how well it works. 73 Peter
Randy, you are making me smile with your quick reply, especially across all of these UA-cams. I appreciate it very much. Like so many others, we appreciate your introducing us to these modes, and your encouragement. Your helping me with these basic understandings gives me the confident to go further in trying. please take care, Lee
Hallo Randy, Thank you very much for this explanation and introduction in PSK31. I have also seen a lot of your other videos, the OSCAR-Operation, for an example. I'm a newcomer from Berlin , Germany (so I'm sorry for my poor English), and I'm interested in HAM-radio since about 6 month. I hope I will find enough time the next one or two month to get my E-licence to start also operating. Great job an thanks again for all of your simple-to-understand videos. Greetings from Germany, Fabian
i got just a few minutes of time and so i tried to rx some psk31. WOW! thank you randy! this could become my new favourite mode! merry x-mas to everybody! 73 de DB1SOL
Just ordered a Kenwood TS-480SAT HF + 50Mhz with cables for connecting it to my pc. I used to operate on HF bands a couple of years ago, but had to sell the radio since I moved to an appartment. I hope I'd be able to operate some psk31 portable this summer!
That is the great thing about all of the various software programs using the sound card interface. Once you have it working for one program, you are ready to try them all. Randy
This video and the sample signal video helped me get past the problem point I earlier had with PSK31. I am using fldigi under linux, even picking up the signals on a microphone near the playing video.
Thank you very much for this tutorial (and all of your excellent amateur radio videos). I found this video after finding your PSK31 sample video, which I was able to decode using the PSKer app on my iPod Touch. That's pretty cool. There are PSK31 programs for Linux. I think I'll install one. I've been interested in amateur radio since 1973, but never got my ticket. I'm finally taking the test in two weeks. After much comparing, I think I'll order an FT-817ND today (RX only for now).
I've been a ham for many years but only recently got into HF digital modes. Unfortunately I can't really transmit via HF because of the apartment I'm in so I monitor using an Icom R75 and R8500 receivers. I managed to hide a vertical HF antenna in a tree out back and it seems to work great for listening. Of course the moment the property manager sees it it's all over but it's been several months now and it's remained hidden. I've had a lot of fun monitoring all kinds of modes :)
Randy, I put a link to your video on the K5GVL - Sabine Radio Club, Greenville, Texas web site. Great explanation of PSK31 and digital modes. Joe Lalumia W1XWX
It happens - I appreciate your kind thoughts though . . . If you're interested in amateur radio I certainly encourage you to become licensed and pursue it because it's a lot of fun, not to mention enhances one's knowledge in many things. Thanks again my friend :)
Very useful. I managed to get PSK31 decoding on my iPad listening to a Sony ICF-SW 7600G no problems and watched several QSOs in just a few minutes. That sound does drive you a bit mad after a while though.
The FT-817 is and interesting radio. I have done over 1000 miles per watt and have work 2500 miles on 6 M SSB with the rubber ducky antenna. I would not recommend the FT-817 as a first and only radio. With the current state of zero sun spots you will need more than 5 watts to get started. The FT-857 is very similar to the FT817, no battery but 100 watts on HF. I have both, and they both have their place in operation. Randy
First I have to say what a blessing ( and I do mean Blessing as in Jesus used you to bless me) you are to this newbe, you helped me build my first ever 10 meter dipole. Adjusted it one time and it was resonant 1-1 at 28.300. I was so happy I did it. I've made 2 contacts with it so far. Thanks. Next topic is the current video. I only understood the CQDX part. Everything else look like random letters and number to me. Please advise. Love the channel.
@K7AGE As part of full disclosure on my part I haven't, and don't at the moment, operate PSK31. What I'm basing my statement on is posts others have made in ham relate forums stating their disappointment that the exchanges using this mode consist chiefly of signal reports, equipment and antenna gear and the like and that no "Hi, how you doing" sort of exchanges take place. Do you engage in ragchews using PSK31?
Hi, PSK certainly could be used on 2M and 440 MHz. Using FM would require the entire FM channel bandwidth, negating the narrowness of PSK31. Using SSB would be better. I don't know if there are any preferred frequencies on these bands. A TNC is a modem for Packet radio, which is different from PSK. PSK typically uses the computer's sound card, or the soundcard located in a box or in the radio. You can run Packet using a sound card interface without needing a TNC. Look for AGW Packet Engine.
I have been wanting to try psk31 and your videos give some great info. i will be looking forward to see your videos.i have enjoyed all off your videos. keep up the good work. also i wonder how you like your TS2000?
very interesting similar to my first PSK31/SSTV receive setup except I used a patch cable even got PSK31 on 6 meters from 120 miles using a HF lowband antenna!
This was extremely helpful, and even bought an IMD Meter by KK7uq for PKS31 and PSK63. I wish I could find a video on working with electronic logging software that would make these contacts easier to store. I am old school, paper logbook, and many times don't even write it down.
Thanks, Randy, could you steer me in the right direction for further discussion of, or just direct recommendation of a palm device or handheld PC that will run digipan for my ATS3B rig? Will digipan work on Linux?
Corticobasal Degeneration, sometimes called CBD. It's in the same family as Parkinson's Disease and Progressive Supra-nuclear Palsy. It has most of the same symptoms as these diseases and there's no cure. It's a somewhat rare disease that normally results in death within 5-8 years after diagnosis but with any disease there have been exceptions. I'm going on year 3. I love ham radio and it's been very difficult to have to give up being able to talk to people on the air now that I'm home all day.
Randy, I've got a Yeasu FT-8900R. I was wondering if I could plug an audio cable into the speaker jack on the back of the radio and into the microphone jack of my computer and do it that way. Am I going to blow anything up? 73! Richard S. KF5RHI, Fort Worth Texas
Yes, I think I might try it out. Unfortunately right now I only have receivers though. I have a progressive brain disorder and I can no longer speak well enough to be understood, which is why I like digital modes but I was thinking about getting an HF transceiver so I can give it a go before I kick the bucket. I think I would really like to try that from what I've been reading and seeing, and of course from everything I've monitored the past few months now :)
Aha! I can use little $1 Baluns (audio matching transformers, balanced unbalanced) across both the speaker out on the transceiver and speaker out on the PC & interface the two!! Awesome! I used my last batch of cheap little audio Baluns in guitar & bass wah wah pedals, mainly because the impedance & resistance was almost spot on for a wah inductor, but for 2%-8% of the price, of a wah inductor, and they actually fit the circuit board holes. They don't look right cocked in there cocked at an angle, but they sure do work really well. By inducing a little constant DC current into the core with the secondary they get even better sounding as the core saturates. Another project for another topic, but be maybe interesting to some people. Over saturating the coils is a really good thing for guitar, but not at all for data signals or voice signals.
Can PSK31 be used on the 2 Meter and 440 bands? If so, what frequencies are or can be used? Also, can it be used on a simple dual band FM transceiver such as an Icom IC-2820H using an TNC?
Thank you very much for all your great videos; I am just getting into digital comms and your videos are very helpful in getting started. I'm looking to buy a newer radio for full operations in the digital modes and you've done a great service in answering my questions about the rig I need to buy. 73 Mike AD7VV North Pole, AK
Randy, please don't fix the captions. They're great as they are. The 'Qaeda Theory': would that be the one that says out of every 100 words recognised by speech-to-text software, 50 will probably be incorrect? "I did today's Japan setup' hi hi. Great guide as always anyway. I've referred a friend I've been trying to get on the mode to it, you talk him through it perfectly. 73 de Perry G0IFI
@liquidgee13 I believe what is happening is that many have all their QSO text in macros. So a QSO may only be an exchange of pre-canned messages. I really don't need to see 10+ lines of equipment used in a station. Asked some questions of the other person and engage in a conversation.
dont know digipan, but mixw can lock on to the signal and readjust if the sender or receiver drifts. You should be able to even use vintage tubereceivers that way.
@ipavemyownroad Yes it is. Google can generate captioning using an automatic voice to text converter, this is not very good. I have manually edited the first couple minutes, which is much better. When I have time, I will finish the rest.
Your computer has speaker or line level, which is a high amplitude signal. This will probably overload the radio's mic input. You will need to attenuate the signal before going into the radio. You may have the same problem going the other way. Search for sound card ham radio interface.
Hi Randy, I have a Realistic DX394 can I use the record out to line in on my PC card? OR Record out to Mic? I do have a mic but its not long enough. Thanks, Mike M6YMN
Hi Randy - I just wanted to share a fix for Digipan 2.0 that I came up with to fix the broken station lookup function in that software. The lookup link for QRZ's web site has changed format since the last version of Digipan was compiled in 2004. I can up with a solution using Firefox and a plugin called redirector. You can find the link to my blog on my page on QRZ - I have an article on exactly how to do it on that blog - My call sign is KK6IQK - And thanks a lot for your videos on PSK - I am now receiving PSK signals with my new station and am close to taking my general exam because of your videos and examples you provide to us all. Take care! -- Jon
Well there's no age limitation in amateur radio. So long as you can pass the test you can be licensed. There's a seven year-old where I live who got his license a few months ago so anybody can do it. Back when I got my license in 1994 you had to wait until your license was physically in your hands before you could operate on your own, which took 2.5 months! a few years later they made it so you could look up your call sign online and begin operating immediately - takes maybe 2 weeks now!
@aseglkj ... I'm using an MFJ-1625 Apartment/Balcony Ant. It's ok. Very limited here. Doesn't do the greatest on 80m but I didn't expect much. After a little modification it at least got me back on the air. Still looking for something better. K4RUE
Give it a try on receiving to see if the radio's frequency is stable enough. If the radio drifts, it may not be able to stay on frequency. PSK needs a fairly stable radio. Randy
Randy, I am unsure if you will ever see this. I was wondering how a 20 meter vertical would work for PSK? Would it be adequate , or do you need a better antenna system, because of QRN or whatever?
Hi, I should work fine. Although most of the digital activity has moved to the JT9 and JT4 modes. Vertical will work great for those modes. They do very well with weak signals.
it's a good idea to use LOWER case when doing PSK31, being vario code the most common letters are smaller in bit size, thus faster to send. and less prone to errors. Just a little hint :) Keep the videos coming K7AGE de OY111 :)
I just finished watching your 6 Meter Dipole video. Do think I can use this inside of my hotel room. I am on the third floor (top floor) which I guess should make it high enough above the Earth to not interfere with the ground.
That will work. You my have some interaction with other things in your hotel room. Give it a try. Some windows may have a metalized film to reduce the sun. Give it a try.
This was really well done. Thank you Randy! Very nice intro to PSK31....now I need a 20 meter antenna. Does PSK31 only work on 20 meter or can I do this on 2 meter and 70cm too? I will research this myself...but great intro, thank you for taking the time to do this!
Drennen Gaffney PSK can work on any band. Typically uses USB and uses less than 50 Hz of bandwidth. If used on FM, then it will take the entire channel. I don't think PSK is used beyond the HF bands.
This could work if you have a friend who is doing the same but I don't think you'll get QSO's on your own. With VHF/UHF you would use an X.25 connection, much higher bandwidth, 1200 or even 9600 baud. 73, W1SOP
Nice video Randy, so thought I'd try. Installed digipan and it runs, but Configure > Waterfall drive.. doesn't open that audio window you show. Other options in Configure *do* work, such as Sound Card... and Font... , but not Waterfall drive... Any ideas why that might be? (Win 7 Pro) 73 de Jim, ZS6JMB
VideosByDPF I am currently trying to make it work. Everything "works." I do get a signal out. I tested this via 2m last night and right now I am trying to find anyone on. 14.070
I think there is a PSK program that runs on Palm. There are PSK programs that run under Linux. I don't know the names and have never run programs under Paln or Linux. Google away and you should find something. Randy

From what I've heard most, if not all, people using PSK31 only do it for quick contacts to log stations and don't chat for QSOs. Is this so?
I have a signalink USB and a Wouxun 2/440 HT ... I have the correct cable for the radio and signalink, can you use PSK with 2 meter or 440??
dont know digipan, but mixw can lock on to the signal and readjust if the sender or receiver drifts.

thanks, I got the PSKer app for the iPad/iPhone and held it up to the speaker, pretty cool
I thought about doing a video about that the other day.
Hi Randy, I have a Realistic DX394 can I use the record out to line in on my PC card? OR Record out to Mic? I do have a mic but its not long enough.
Thanks,
Mike M6YMN
i used packet radio back in the day, this seems alot more simple without a packet modem on an rs232 port :)
Great info! Been exploring new types of transmissions. Nice to add this one to the bucket list.
Thanks a lot, Andy! Your lucid explanation got me set up to receive in no time. Now for your other videos! 73 de Norman G4LQF.
@M3XEM You may be overdriving the mic input on the computer.
Take care! -- Jon
Jon Almada John, thanks for the fix it tips. Please keep me posted on your general.
K7AGE passed my general... just getting my antenna put up and should be up and running in the next week... woohoo
Jon Almada
Outstanding!
K7AGE I am excited... will see you out there. 73 de KK6IQL

and do it right.

Very good. Randy
K4RUE
As always, thank you for helping us along. Any great video.
hi is 14070 the only freq that we can use,i only have atech ticket. Thanks
Give it a try on receiving to see if the radio's frequency is stable enough. If the radio drifts, it may not be able to stay on frequency. PSK needs a fairly stable radio. Randy
Marty, glad that I helped explain Digipan to get you going. C U on the air. Randy
Pro trick : you can watch movies on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching loads of movies these days.
@Santiago Cassius yea, I've been using flixzone for years myself :D
@Santiago Cassius yea, I've been watching on Flixzone for since november myself :)
@Santiago Cassius definitely, I have been watching on Flixzone for since november myself :D
@Santiago Cassius yup, I've been watching on Flixzone for since december myself :)
Can this be used with 6 or 2 meters? Thanks
@outatime1955 ipods can hook up to radios?
Sounds like a plan. Have fun.
It is part of the tuning display. Not really needed with the AFC. Randy
Hope to see you on the air
it's a good idea to use LOWER case when doing PSK31, being vario code the most common letters are smaller in bit size, thus faster to send. and less prone to errors. Just a little hint :)
Keep the videos coming K7AGE de OY111 :)
@travburg1 thanks, I fixed this in the show notes.
leOOx, thanks for the video. What is the software? Rnady
Give it a try.
very good stuff Randy.
(Win 7 Pro)
73 de Jim, ZS6JMB
Probably different with the newer version of window. Try the windows audio mixer
Forgot to ask, do you have a video showing how to directly connect the radio to the computer? I am mainly a Mac user.
Thanks!
Rob
Sorry, I don't have a video that shows hooking up a radio. You typically need some type of serial interface to work with your logging software.
Rob Fern did you ever run PSK31 on a Mac? I too use Mac and have been looking for more info on using Mac instead of windows.
Sorry no Macs here. Google around to find others that are doing that.
VideosByDPF I am currently trying to make it work. Everything "works." I do get a signal out. I tested this via 2m last night and right now I am trying to find anyone on. 14.070
Calling CQ on 14.070 psk31
I think there is a PSK program that runs on Palm. There are PSK programs that run under Linux. I don't know the names and have never run programs under Paln or Linux. Google away and you should find something. Randy
