    The Quick-Firing ‘Wing Battery’ just south-west of Coalhouse Fort inland of Coalhouse Point was constructed in 1893 to counter enemy torpedo boat technology which presented itself as a new potential threat to shipping in the Thames. It would have housed four 6-pounder quick firing guns each capable of unloading 25 rounds per minute. These were far better suited to combating such fast-moving targets than the large slow breech-loading guns at Coalhouse Fort. The battery went on to be later adapted with two searchlights added when the guns became obsolete around the turn of the 20th Century and with advancing military technology at better suited nearby military sites the one here was likely abandoned completely by the end of the first World War.

    We are lucky to have so many of these sites in Essex. There were lots of ammunition factories along the estuary both Essex and Kent side, they must have needed protection? Just along the river near Corringham there was a huge site with light railway and town built. Unfortunately I think the new port has swallowed up most of anything that was there. Great video 👍🏻

      Yes there was loads to protect along the Thames.. We've actually had a wonder around parts of the old Corringham site a while back, not much left to find unfortunately these days but it's fascinating to know what was once there.. Really love all the history around Essex. Thanks for watching and commenting 🙂

    Great video very interesting. One question what is a magazine.

    • @ExploringWithEmAndStu
      @ExploringWithEmAndStu  Рік тому +1

      Hi, glad you liked the video.. A magazine is an ammunition storage area, usually encased in concrete or semi sunken for protection incase of accidental explosion 😊

    The German bunkers we have in Denmark are so well built, we got 7,000 of them here.
