I'm pretty sure the map was supposed to be Afganistan but then the taliban took over the country again in real life so they fictionalized the map. Also I'm pretty sure the map takes place in an alternative Universe where the UFOs carrying the Unturned virus crash landed in the Soviet Union in the late 1970s.
Considering how PMCs work in the modern era (basically corporations/organizations killing or protecting stuff to make money), imo the PMCs in Arid came here to intervene and fight off the Soviets too. We COULD also say that the PMCs are here to only fight off rebels, but I believe that will make no sense. Either those two, or maybe make money from Adamantine
You've found most of the puzzle pieces but failed to connect the dots. The reason its set in the past is because it is, its a testing ground for the virus. Hence the lack of flamers, spitters ect The PMC would've been hired by Scorp 7 to ensure the spread of the virus for testing, and to harvest adamantide on the way Fort Knell would've been attacked by PMCs, It's safe to assume tensions between Knell and PMCs due to the MRLS at Knell aiming at various PMC Locations
my head canon to Arid is that instead of the afghan war, the USSR is fighting [FICTIONAL COUNTRY] in order to seize Adamantine, and the US probably hired PMCs to intervene this soviet-fiction country war, as well as smuggling resources out of this country. my best shot at it is that this is _probably_ an United Arabia, that annexed Afghanistan, also probably under US influence. USSR took up arms, and spicy zombie virus came along. however this does put a discrepancy on normal unturned lore. my best guess is that Russia left the USSR to explain the existance of Russia AND the USSR on the same timeline. eh, im thinking too much, i love arid though
I'm 99% sure Fort Knell is supposed to be a US Embassy. The devs apparently modeled it after the US Embassy in Mogadishu, Somalia (if you look it up you'll see the similarities). I'm also pretty sure Renaxon or one of the devs said it himself but I dont really remember.
Something that’s always bugged me about Arid is that even though I’ve seen a lot of theories saying it’s set in the 1980s, there’s several things that kinda prove otherwise. If Arid was set in the 80s-90s, why are there modern weapons for sale (the Zolash Mod 1, WKM 12.7, TX-45, GP460S, etc) at the traders as well as spawning at Fort Knell? My personal lore, is that the survivor is connected to the traders in the safezone, who were sent to Arid to investigate the origins of the virus in the region. Fort Knell, the deadzone in the top left of the map, was a US-backed coalition main base that was constructed to try and discover the origin of the virus in the region. During the operation of the base, something catastrophic happened there. A horde approached the base and threatened to destroy it. 2 missile trucks, loaded with missiles similar to the Thanato missiles used in Greece, were deployed to try and quell the horde. They were too late. The base was overrun, the missiles sabotaged by the US forces in a last ditch effort to destroy the area/horde, therefore irradiating the entire area around the base. Soon after contact with Fort Knell was lost, a small force was mustered to set up a safezone in the region. The force consisted of people from multiple countries, as suggested by the Norwegian patch on one of the traders. You are deployed into the area a while after the original group was sent in, which could by why there are so few zombies in the main city. This could also explain why there are so many more zombies in the airfield/radar base because they didn't have the manpower to advance that far. You are then tasked to find out what really happened here, as well as finish cleaning up the area and attempt rebuilding this once thriving country. But that's just my headcanon for Arid. Let me know what you think.
While Zolash mod 1 is just an upgraded AK, TX-45 is based on the MP5SD manufactured all the way back in 1974. That leaves WKM (ShAK-12) and GP460S (Honey Badger) both first made in 2011. It would have changed my mind on Arid, but the description of it being in central Asia and then there being Arabic all around the place suggested It's man-made error. Also, Fort Knell just doesn't look like a research facility in my opinion. We don't see any signs of the coalition either, while the presence of the US soldiers is immaculate. Why are there way more zombies on the airfield than in Abu Al-Kaba'er? Well, the announcement clearly says to evacuate. The airbase was overrun by the Soviets- an enemy nation, while the city was full of civilians that not only fled the war, but also later on from the virus. Of course everyone can have their own theories and I appreciate your comment, but I'll stay with my theory.
You kinda have a point, I'm actually baffled to the fact that some modern weapons can be found on a Cold War-era country, like the GP460 (based on the HK416, first used in 2004), and the MI10 (based on the KAC M110, first used in 2008). I haven't solved or made any theories about this ever since, but yeah. Also, that Norwegian guy named Roland is a PMC operative, I asked The Knight Writer about it, he said to me that this was a reference to the song, "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner"
@@ashwaker The Mod.1 Zolash has on it a modern Zenitco handguard and a buffer-tube adapter with an M4 style stock, both at least mod 90s modifications. As someone else pointed out, the GP460 (HK416) was first used in 2004, as well as spawning with a myriad of mid 2000s attachments; the TX-45 also spawns with a modern holographic sight. Fort Knell also has the Sabot MG (chopped up Negev NG-7, first produced in 2012), MGL (M32 with a modern holo sight), and the MI10 (M110 SASS, first used in 2008). The KAC PDW can also be found at Point Lima locked away in a crate, not produced until 2008. With regards to Fort Knell, I do kinda think now that it was purely a US run base, but set up much later on in the outbreak in Arid due to the abundance of modern weaponry as opposed to the Soviet airfield and bunkers sans AG-19. There is a large Arabic-speaking population of people in Central Asia as well. AG-19 is a bit of a mystery, since it does have 2 spawns for the ShAK-12 and can spawn the kitted out modern Zolashes. Maybe some small RU SOF team tried to sneak back in around when the Americans were showing up, and quickly retreated out, leaving their weapons behind?
Good video! Way better than mine tbh, I was kinda lazy on it and I had a problem of trying to force every curated map into the same timeline. That's actually how I started the "virus started in 2016" thing, because I was trying to force Rio into the main timeline but it just didn't work. The SDG wiki says it was 2018 and Buak cements it now. So, sorry for essentially lying about that lol. I guess it's not a huge deal but now that I'm more mature I actually kinda feel bad about it. Hope you keep making content!
My crackpot theory is that the soviet forces stationed there either have something to do with the time travel theory of unturned itself, or they themselves were just remnants of the soviet union left behind in Arid to fight like pmcs without an actual governing body to control them.
I thought the map was set in the 1980s due to the soviets being there. But the US uniforms seem to be based off of the 2000s UCP pattern. This might not have relevancy but it still ticked me off as a uniform nerd and made my mind make up a bunch of excuses to make the timeline work
US' APC at base is based on the Stryker APC which entered service in 2002s And for weaponry there is also HK416 rifle which doesnt exist until 2004, same with Soviet you can also find Zenitco upgrade AK which makes it way beyond 2010s
i believe that the map is set in iran since soviets did invade it but were kicked out of iran later but it makes sense since they speak a little bit of arabic there
Bro made a theory about Arid when it hasn't gotten any new lore added, I admire your commitment. Please somehow make a theory about A6 Polaris or Carpat idk

Either those two, or maybe make money from Adamantine
Also, we can safely say that the said PMC is most likely funded by a Western country or organization, since their gear and weapons are western-made.
