At the end where things got hung up... Last fall we were in ND for Sugar Beet harvest and parking our 5th wheel. I was talking to a neighbor and didn't lay down the tail gate. My husband thought I motioned for him to go ahead and BAM! Good thing we have a Beast of a truck! It tweaked the tail gate a little but was fixable. Lesson learned about "clear" communication! Love watching your videos! I would also agree not traveling back roads with a large rig in tow. So many variables that are unexpected. Through Kansas and the hills. wow watch the fuel milage drop! Not to mention the extra stress on the truck. We took a back road to avoid tolls. Ended up driving through neighborhoods that were narrow. My husband was NOT happy to say the least. So when the guy who helped you said he was there to save a marriage.. as funny as that was.. it could be true. LOL
35:50 … I doubt there will be a Dollar General on that road. 😵💫 Kalyn, we lost that DG contest. Off the beaten path can be super fun at times. You would have never seen the Sweet South Market! What a cool truck!!!

Wow, I was on the edge of my seat during the washed-out boat ramp incident. We’ve been in similar situations, and I SO felt your stress! (As well as the relief of finding the nearby RV park with space available.) Loved the backroads series, and looking forward to the next adventures!
You just made one of your biggest memories. Easy trip no issues are soon forgotten. Your'e ok the rig is ok. And you will never forget "that boat ramp in Tennessee" I sanitize my water tank twice a year, but still never drink from it. The lord made bottled water for a reason. My wife and I have been following your adventures since you travelled to Alaska. You have given us some insight into the world of off-grid boondocking as well as work camping. We are both soon to be retired and have travelled the northern states from our home in Saskatchewan all the way to Maine. Thanks for your videos.
I'm from WVa and thanks for this , I have not been to this cave, but you should have looked up Cass is scenic railroad and snow shoe , we have a cabin just a few miles from them .
when we travel with our truck camper I only do non major highways. I have never been disappointed but sometimes some sketchy roads. love these trips though.
There isn't a ton of boondocking in FL - and it's complicated in some cases, but it's probably got the most spots on the east coast. Unfortunately many of them aren't too close to some of the big tourist spots. What area are you heading toward? -J
Glad you survived the horror road. Lesson learned and a great campfire what-not-to-do story, when you can "laugh about it" and not feel like you are reliving it. Love your off the beaten path adventure. Learning a lot through your experiences. Thanks for sharing. 😮😅😂❤

That cave is so cool. I’ve only been to two caves, Mark Twain (of course since I’m from Missouri) and a private cave family friends had. Oh my you guys are so funny. Missed turns, just did that a couple of weeks ago…and I knew exactly where I was going. Wow, that was so scary, so very scary. Now I know why I’m compelled to pray for travel mercies. My heart was pounding. So nice to run into good people. That is how country people are where I’m from. I can only imagine how exhausted you were after that ordeal. You deserve to spend the night with full hookups. Wow! Oh there was my favorite photo of the two of you. Love that so much. Watching you navigate Kalyn just made me miss that so much. I love reading maps and plotting out a trip. Agree on the water. I’d be doing the same thing. You should check, out Matt Mitchell and his Dollar General jokes. He is a hoot to follow anyway. Dollar General and Waffle House. lol Have you ever run out of gas in the truck when pulling the RV? Also, I miss the motorcycle. It is so strange to see nothing in front of the truck. Yep, travel mercies big time for you guys. 🙏💙
Hi Ernestine! Haha... Just checked out Matt Mitchell. 😂 Lots of funny stuff there! Can I plead the 5th on running out of fuel? 👀 lol. We ran out once in California. We had like 18 miles to go to get to our boondocking spot and our light just came on. What I didn't know was that several of those miles were a 10% uphill grade. Ran out about 1 mile from the top of the mountain - thankfully next to a pull off. Rode the motorcycle into town and brought 6 gallons of diesel back. -J
@ you are gutsier than I am! When I travel I stop between 1/3 and 1/2. But my sister…she is worse than you. One time, one time only, I sputtered into the gas station just in time. Matt is such a hoot. I know nothing about SEC but I love to watch his videos about them. I miss all the innuendos that fans would pick up but his talent is just amazing. And he does it all while being PG.
May 2021 we were in St Petersburg, FL when the Colonial Pipeline shutdown. Trying to get to our next stop in Western North Carolina was stressful. Pulled in with less than 1/4 tank. Had to wait 10 days for a fuel truck. Luckily made it home to North California with no fuel shortage issue.
Goodness, thanks for sharing this, although I'm sure this was very stressful for you both! We would have felt the same. The hurricane did a lot of destruction, quite sad! Glad you made it to Fla. As always, great information and good things to think about and prepare for. Quite the adventure.....without highway travel. Be safe and happy and healthy new year to you both.
Fun episode. Good job getting through the hiccups. So sorry to see the devastation. Joe u are driving man ya gotta know what state in dude. 😅. We saw so many Dollar G's on our trip south to Alabama. Like everywhere. 😂
Excellent video guys, showing that not everything RV’ing is rainbows and lollipops!! You actually managed (for the camera at least 🤷♂️) to remain extremely calm….Well Done!! 👍😃
Yeah, we typically aren't yellers. 😂 We can get testy with one another at times (who doesn't) but 6 years of RV life and I'm hoping that it means we have gotten even better at working together! And certainly not all lollipops and rainbows 😂 But the rainbows are worth the rain in our opinion. 😁 -J
Hey guys we really enjoy watching you, I’d like to make a suggestion however, stop and get a laminated truckers atlas , I would recommend Rand McNally, it will show you primary and secondary truck routes, etc. it would save you some hassle when you are wanting to avoid the interstate, but still stay on roads that are safe for you to be on with your rig. A truck specific GPS unit is a great help as well. Just a thought from an old wore out trucker. Happy travels.
Appreciate the rec! I do have to admit that avoiding roads that we shouldn't be on isn't really our M.O. though... *cough* McCarthy Road in Alaska *cough* 😂 But this one... this one Helene did us in on for sure for sure. A good GPS unit is on our upgrade list but since we've gone 6 years without one it keeps getting shoved down the list by more pressing items. lol. -J
I loved this series. It was really pretty but man, I was holding my breath on that road. I can also understand the stress that would be involved on those roads and trying to route it. Looking forward to winter in FL!!
Since you like caves & you’re in the South, you should check out Ruby Falls just outside of Chattanooga. It’s an underground, in a cave, waterfall! Very cool!
Great series! I love caves. I've been to Oregon Caves in Cave Junction and Carlsbad Caverns twice. The first time with my sister on a trip from Dallas to San Francisco. Her VW Campmobile was hit by a drunk driver and we were stuck in Albuquerque for 10 days while it was fixed. The second time was with my wife and 2 little kids. When we were in Carlsbad it was so hot the fuel was boiling in the fuel pump and we were stranded on the side of the road for about 6 hours while I hitch-hiked into town to get an electric pump to bypass the mechanical one. It worked well enough to get us out of the south. Looking forward to the next series.
I think we’ve all been there. We messed up on one of our very first long trips and ended up on the Blue Ridge Parkway with the short tunnels at 10:00pm about to run outa fuel and no cell service. Such a scary time but you’re happy when it’s all over, especially when it’s with no damage to your rig.
Hurricane Helene did a number on TN, NC, I-40, and northern GA. We're full time RVer's now but we are from that area. Sounds like most everything that was on the French Broad River was washed away. Safe travels. ~Lynette
I've been watching you for awhile, ever since you were workcamping to save for your Alaska trip. It's so cool when I found out you're from our neck of the woods in Upstate NY. We live in Schoharie County.
Oh that was tense. We've been in similar tight spots. Glad you made it out. On a happier note, you two have inspired me to look for more off-beat attractions in areas we visit. We're currently planning our May/June RV adventure and I've made note of several stops I might have previously overlooked.
Comments like this make us smile soo so much. Of course we love to entertain and bring a smile but to think that some people are actually making plans because of something we've shared... just melts us. -J
Newer campers don’t have the structural integrity to hold a full tank. They are sometimes lifted up from the underside and held up with straps. There have been tanks that have fallen out on the road. Older campers put l the tanks on top of the floor
Great video guys! I would have to say though we’re more of an interstate traveler than backroads. Fuel tends to be cheaper not to mention getting better mpg. That one lane road situation was hairy! Stay safe in Florida and we’ll see you next week! Happy New Year 🎉!
Just a suggestion. Next time you get to a road you aren't sure about, pull out the drone and take a look. Hopefully that will help you make the choice of driving down or not.
To heck with caution. You're channels is more exciting with some unexpected, potential disaster. Besides, the impending misstep and the sudden triumph tend to equal and balance on your channel. Ying and yang. Or as I often say, Kharma. Never fear to tread where others chose not to go. To boldly go where no others have gone before. Capt. Tiberius Kirk. 🖖
Another great video you two.... First of all, we've been in very similar situations ourselves. We've had some BAD turn-arounds or back-ups along the way...ooof. We've done JUST what you did at the gas station a number of times...come in at an angle with the truck on an outside pump, get fuel, and get out (going into opposing lanes as well). Finding those hidden gems is great. I call them "little attractions" or "little history" as opposed to the big marquee attractions that everyone knows about. Some of our best visits were to these little locations. We also try to stay off of the Interstate once we get to the part of the country we're traveling through. We have a backup camera and that has helped me TREMENDOUSLY when I have to back up like you guys did. Being able to see exactly what is behind me has been a game-changer. Highly recommended (we have the Haloview BT-7). I know you guys used to have the motorcycle, but one thing I purchased last year was an electric scooter. They make several that are robust enough for dirt roads. You can fold it and keep it in the back seat, or the back of the truck or in a bay. It makes scouting down those sketchy roads SOOO much nicer by being able to zip down and really check it out. Something to think about. LOL...we have also noticed the Dollar Generals everywhere phenomenon when we're off the beaten path as well....that and churches. Keep driving the back roads! Much better!!
That’s the best way to travel, back roads BUT y’all definitely got in a pinch. That’s the whole reason we have a lifted, 4wd, 21’ Class C. I could have backed down the spot where the old ramp was and turned around. We put a lot of thought into out purchase but it’s not for everyone. Glad it worked out though 👍🏼 99% of the time we have a full tank of 💧 water. Just our thing. 10’ 10” 😮 I’m close, I’m 10’ 6” 😵💫. I’d go slow 😂 When I retire and go FT our plan is to take backroads. Not totally because that’s nuts but as much as we can, it’s definitely how you see America 🇺🇸 DG is everywhere 😂
Yeah! You probably could have made that turn because of the 4WD! I wouldn't have recomended it for anything less because it was not super stable and had a good grade to it. I briefly considered attempting to back the 5er down there and pull out... then I remembered what truck I drive. 😂 (And Kalyn shouted "I don't think that's a good idea at all" out her window. ) -J
Joe: If we ever meetup, remind me to tell you of our Ruidoso experience. I think I can match your fear on what happened in Tennessee. I know you are well beyond Baker now. The weather has been quite cool and we are getting ready to see 3 nights in the 20's. i hope Tampa is warmer. I'm surprised about the DG's. There should easily have been 50. They grow every 223 feet. Glad you all are safe and sound. Take care.
Yes, those folks in Newport got hit hard by Helene. I'm glad you guys didn't have any major issues getting out. There were a lot of things that could have gone wrong. Choo-choo in Ringgold was a good find.
Check out Solomon's Castle, but don't take the RV. There was a restaurant in addition to the Castle and lots of free things to look at. The Castle tour was worth the price IMHO. There is also a vintage Hotel that is operated by a college of Hospitality that has a HUGE Dessert offering in addition to great food. Lots of things to see in Florida for sure.
Y’all really need to look into getting a larger fuel tank. I got a 60 gallon that replaced the stock fuel tank and it was the best purchase ever for my truck. Enjoy watching yall.
Haha! Thanks so much! We're hoping to get a whole new truck this year. We're thrilled to be considering that since it was just a year ago that we were barely making ends meet. -J
My wife and I was permanent RVers and we used to flip a coin and whoever won the toss got to call the direction first and as we came to intersections or off ramps the other called the direction rotating until we found something cool to stop for and check out. If we liked the place and wanted to exploe more we would then find a place to roost. The highways were to boring so we always tried to stay off them.

LOL
That was really good.. Very entertaining! It was really nice of the guy to help you get turned around! Great stuff!
Yes it was!!! He came out specifically to see if we needed help. -J
Hey the boondocking spot at the beginning had trees, that is great.
😂 and free white noise at night. 😂
Yes, the boat ramp was torn out by the flood. Helene did it. Newport Tennessee is the home of tiny Incredicle. Sorry you missed it.
Spent so much time working our down time was the big hike and then some walks around the block at our campground. 🙂 -J
35:50 … I doubt there will be a Dollar General on that road. 😵💫
Kalyn, we lost that DG contest.
Off the beaten path can be super fun at times. You would have never seen the Sweet South Market! What a cool truck!!!
You would have won the DG bet had we not had over 50 miles of zero civilization! lol -J
Kalyn is right! Goat eyes are SO creepy! Good thing the rest of them are mostly cutie patooties. What a pickle! 😬 That was so nice the gentleman helped y’all out. 😊 Great episode!
I should get her a goat nutcracker. 😂 -J
@ 😂😂
That's where your motorcycle would have been handy....to scout out that road😮 scary watching you folks navigate that road, in the dark no less. Glad some nice locals came upon you and were gracious enough to help you out. Back roads are never boring. Prayers with you folks 🙏
I think I would have not scouted... I was too in a hurry trying to beat the sunset. 🫣 -J
😂 just before you said serial 🔪 I was thinking the same .
It genuinely crossed my mind. I was like "If that dude goes and closes the gate.... I'm blasting out of here with or without the RV... 😂" -J
Yay👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Made my Friday night 🎉😊 So happy to see your newest video
FIRST COMMENT AWARD!!! 🏆 -J
I went to Howe caverns on a school field trip.. I grew up in Delmar NY, now living in Park City, Utah since 92'.
If you're ever in Arkansas. Blanchard Springs Caverns looks a lot like that one and also has a formation you can touch.
Nice! You know we're all about getting to touch stuff! LOL -J
Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your adventures . It helped my wife and i do make that decision to buy our first camper and get out and enjoy a little bit of life.
Wow, I was on the edge of my seat during the washed-out boat ramp incident. We’ve been in similar situations, and I SO felt your stress! (As well as the relief of finding the nearby RV park with space available.) Loved the backroads series, and looking forward to the next adventures!
That campground was such a lifesaver! -J
You just made one of your biggest memories. Easy trip no issues are soon forgotten. Your'e ok the rig is ok. And you will never forget "that boat ramp in Tennessee"
I sanitize my water tank twice a year, but still never drink from it. The lord made bottled water for a reason.
The cave was really cool, thanks for sharing that. Don't lose your adventurous spirit. Its where life happens!
Wow, went to a FCRV Rally in Lewisburg a few years ago and wished we had known about those caverns. Would love to have seen them!
Next time you're there look them up! Totally worth it IMO. And let them know this random youtube channel you watch made you aware of them. 😁 -J
SO PROUD OF YALL!!! My husband and I were on the edge of seats! We have been in that type of situation before and let me tell you I was glad we had a bathroom on board. I was so rattled. It took a while to get over it. Yall did amazing ❤ been watching yall for a long time. Subscribed. Thanks for the great content ❤️❤️
That's some EXTREME boondocking!! Glad you all survived your "No Highways Challenge" to ring in the New Year!🥳🎉🎆
It sure would have been if we had tried to balance on what was left of the boat ramp area. 😂 -J
Talk about drama and suspense! With me holding my breath and leaning just right, I'm pretty sure I helped you get off of the gravel road. You're welcome! 22:01
Happy New Years.
Happy New Years! -J
Joe: "Will it be okay to pull my fifth wheel into this major hurricane damage area"?
Local Husband: " Sure, no problem. Bring that thing right on in."
Local wife: " I'll go fetch the Kodak video recorder."
😢
10:16 glad you're ok. Camera still works.
Ringold is where we purchased our RV then we stopped by a local Walmart bought some goodies and headed off to Florida
Nice! I always think it's awesome when I see a place I recognize in someones youtube video! 🙂 -J
I flew helicopters in the Army for most of my adult life so I don't do "low fuel lights." lol We have an aux 28 gallon fuel tank so diesel is no longer a worry. We also stuff me, my wife and golden into a Revel van so we mostly fit everywhere. Hat's off to you 5th wheel folks.
Haha! I would hope not!! If I run out of fuel I don’t fall out of the sky. 😂😂😂
My wife and I have been following your adventures since you travelled to Alaska. You have given us some insight into the world of off-grid boondocking as well as work camping. We are both soon to be retired and have travelled the northern states from our home in Saskatchewan all the way to Maine. Thanks for your videos.
Awesome! Thanks so much for following along. -J
Oh my goodness! This one had my heart beating fast!
We visited Melrose Caverns in Harrisonburg, VA, a cave used by Civil War soldiers who wrote their names on the walls - very cool.
Oh that sounds very cool! -J
I'm from WVa and thanks for this , I have not been to this cave, but you should have looked up Cass is scenic railroad and snow shoe , we have a cabin just a few miles from them .
We'll have to look it up sometime! -J
We have noticed that most dollar general’s we see only have one way in and the same way out.
Interesting observation. -J
when we travel with our truck camper I only do non major highways. I have never been disappointed but sometimes some sketchy roads. love these trips though.
A lot more to see off the interstates! -J
Can’t wait for next week we leave for Florida on January 14 and we’ve book a couple harvest host and have trouble finding open spaces.
Don't miss Luray Caverns if you're ever passing through Virginia!!
Haven't been there... but have seen about 1000 billboards for them along the highway! 😂 They have got to be one of the most advertised caverns in the country! -J
Thank you Shawn 👍
Full hookup well deserved 👍👍
Trinity protects you from goats too 🐐🐾🐾
Sorry Kalyn, I'm with Joseph, the back roads were a nice change up 😊
Great video 😎
Dollar General and Waffle House. lol
Have you ever run out of gas in the truck when pulling the RV?
@@ernestinebyrne9912 The trick with humor is making something funny to everyone, and extra funny to those "who know" 😂 -J
We travel the "no highways" almost always!! Love the parts of the country that is just a blurr at 70 MPH. 😂so true about the Dollar Generals😂
70mph!? I don't go faster than 63. 😂 #OldManJoe
Oh wow! That's rough!! -J
It was nice of Shawn to come along and save your marriage
Haha! It was such a blessing! Neither of us were upset at each other....yet.... but we still had over a mile to go. 😂 -J
Happy new year! -J
Fun episode. Good job getting through the hiccups. So sorry to see the devastation. Joe u are driving man ya gotta know what state in dude. 😅. We saw so many Dollar G's on our trip south to Alabama. Like everywhere. 😂
Hey!!! The navigator didn’t tell me we changed states and there wasn’t a sign! 😂 -J
We had a great adventure going through the Shashone Ice Caves in Idaho.
I heard about the French Broad River during the aftermath of Hurricane Helene coverage. It flooded...badly.
We got a good look at some aerial footage of that river during the flood. Absolutely devastating for the community. -J
I do have to admit that avoiding roads that we shouldn't be on isn't really our M.O. though... *cough* McCarthy Road in Alaska *cough* 😂
But this one... this one Helene did us in on for sure for sure.
Very cool!
Saw about 100 billboards for them. 😂 Have thought of stopping many times but haven't done so yet. Maybe next time through! -J
Oh wow... those sound like not-all-that-fun adventures!! Glad there were some bright spots! -J
Happy New Year and you are almost to 40K subs!!!!!!!
Getting there!!
I know those tunnels! We thankfully saw a sign a few years ago before turning onto it. -J
Wow, Choo Choo BBQ is minutes from our home. Glad you enjoyed it. Enjoy watching your adventurers!
Nice! It was a great stop. Hopefully the church isn't mad we parked in their lot. 👀 -J
@@OpenRoading Absolutely NOT at all. Park and visit anytime.
Hurricane Helene did a number on TN, NC, I-40, and northern GA. We're full time RVer's now but we are from that area. Sounds like most everything that was on the French Broad River was washed away. Safe travels. ~Lynette
Yeah! We had been under the impression that it was Asheville and south east - we were totally wrong on that! -J
You might look at a Zero water pitcher…it’s way better than Britta. They have all sizes. We use it for any water while camping. Even when boondocking.
I've been watching you for awhile, ever since you were workcamping to save for your Alaska trip. It's so cool when I found out you're from our neck of the woods in Upstate NY. We live in Schoharie County.
Home of Howe Caverns! (I had to look it up to be sure. lol) -J
This is true for many camper models - not all. You are right! It’s important to know how your specific tank is mounted. -J
Driving Miss Trinity 🥰 and I didn't laugh when you fell 🤭 ..... much ☺.
Love from Australia Ruth.
😂 Kalyn's mom called her and said the same thing. 😂 -J
I love that cavern! Thanks for sharing your journey.
Great video guys! I would have to say though we’re more of an interstate traveler than backroads. Fuel tends to be cheaper not to mention getting better mpg. That one lane road situation was hairy! Stay safe in Florida and we’ll see you next week! Happy New Year 🎉!
Happy New Year! Stay safe and warm.
Happy new year! -J
Just a suggestion. Next time you get to a road you aren't sure about, pull out the drone and take a look. Hopefully that will help you make the choice of driving down or not.
Excellent idea. I was just so wanting to get in before dark that I threw caution to the wind.... should not've done that. -J
To heck with caution. You're channels is more exciting with some unexpected, potential disaster. Besides, the impending misstep and the sudden triumph tend to equal and balance on your channel. Ying and yang. Or as I often say, Kharma.

Glad you made it through that one unscathed! Also - great music this week!! 🎶
Glad it worked out though 👍🏼
99% of the time we have a full tank of 💧 water. Just our thing.
10’ 10” 😮 I’m close, I’m 10’ 6” 😵💫. I’d go slow 😂 When I retire and go FT our plan is to take backroads. Not totally because that’s nuts but as much as we can, it’s definitely how you see America 🇺🇸
DG is everywhere 😂
Yeah! You probably could have made that turn because of the 4WD! I wouldn't have recomended it for anything less because it was not super stable and had a good grade to it. I briefly considered attempting to back the 5er down there and pull out... then I remembered what truck I drive. 😂 (And Kalyn shouted "I don't think that's a good idea at all" out her window. ) -J
4:15 Maquoketa caves. Iowa! This summer!
Have to check them out some time! -J
Great episode!
Take care.
I will try to remember! -J
I am looking forward to your next video. We are heading that way in February.
Yes, those folks in Newport got hit hard by Helene. I'm glad you guys didn't have any major issues getting out. There were a lot of things that could have gone wrong. Choo-choo in Ringgold was a good find.
You aren't alone in road surprises. Ask me about a forest road that became a 4x4 playground! So glad that when that was over.
Oh man. Sounds like a nightmare! -J
My parents brought this location up to us while we were visiting them over the holidays! -J
Happy new year🎉
Happy new year Anthony! 🥈 -J
We have camped at Wilderness Landing several times. Love the hiking trails and the Blackwater River there.
Choo Choo BBQ in Ringgold is close to my house, glad you liked it. Although, I've always wondered why their locations are near a animal vet office lol
Lol. I didn't see it say "Locally sourced" on the window or anything. 😂 -J
Helene did a number over in Eastern Tn.
It sure did! 😢 -J
@@OpenRoading3500 Silverado High Country
My wife and I was permanent RVers and we used to flip a coin and whoever won the toss got to call the direction first and as we came to intersections or off ramps the other called the direction rotating until we found something cool to stop for and check out. If we liked the place and wanted to exploe more we would then find a place to roost. The highways were to boring so we always tried to stay off them.
That's really cool! I bet you have some really fun stories! -J
