I met Buford Pusser at the drive in my home town of Cordele, Georgia when they had came out with his first movie Walking Tall staring Joe Don Baker. He said he was on his way to fly out to Texas to court to testify against some of the men that were involved in the ambush of his wife. I do believe he was a good man.

If the story is true, he surely was a heck of a law man. But I’ve heard all sorts of things about the man. That he was corrupt himself and he killed his wife and shot himself to get away with it. I don’t want to believe that, but then again, I wasn’t there.

I met him in Dallas Texas... still have his autograph. I met his mother Helen at his home in Adamsville, Tennessee in 1982.... I still have the 2 pens she gave me and I signed her book she asked visitors to sign.
She told me several stories about Buford and his daddy.....she was a wealth of information.....
She showed me that Bufford had been made Deputies all over America and in some places it was honorary but most were authinic and a full commission.......

As a fellow Tennesseean, from Memphis and the fact that it was a true story. Bufords story had such an effect on my life that I Became a Sheriff's Deputy then a Police Chief.
I know the stories that are circulating about him and how he did his job. And I for one, from my experience as a police officer you can't always be a nice guy. It will get you or someone else killed.

I grew up in Henderson county, TN, which borders McNairy county. My grandmother owned a huge trailer park in Gibson county that had problems with moonshiners. She and Mr. Pusser knew each other from going to the weekly VFW dances. (They dated for a while in the 70s.) It was rumored that she was one of his informants. I actually met the man at my grandmother’s house when I was a small child. My mom said it was about six months or so before he died.

FYI there were actually 3 installments of the original Walking Tall Movie. Joe Don Baker played Buford in the first movie, Bo Svenson Played Buford in 2&3. Buford was going to play himself in the 3rd movie but died in the car crash before filming. The last movie is titled "Walking Tall 3 The Final Chapter" which includes Buford's death. Also the Big stick was actually a fence post Buford grabbed while raiding a moonshine steel. He was unarmed as he didn't like to carry a gun. That's how the big stick started, folks all around started giving him big sticks.

Visited the Museum in 2016 along with his Grave site and the location of his fatal accident. He had an interesting life. Loved the movies when they came out. Was a big fan from Wisconsin. Great little Town Adamsville. Spent a good part of a day at Shiloh nearby also. Soooooo interesting. Surprisingly a few people who claimed they knew him, that I met, did not have nice things to say about him, which surprised me. Being in Law Enforcement myself it was interesting reading Dwana's book and others about Buffords short career as a Cop. One thing that blew my mind is that he was the only full time Deputy in that whole County when he was elected Sheriff the first time. From what I've read the only person alive from that family, now that Dwana's gone, is her one stepbrother. Kind of a sad story.

Sheriff Buford. Pussser was a real man. A man with morals and integrity I've seen unmatched. since he was murdered. To me Joe Don Baker was born to play this iconic man. When they were getting ready to make part 2, I saw the real Buford in the paper in the next county from me. He was getting off a plane. I was thinking( wow this guy's a knockout)There will never be another like him. He will always be remembered as the Sheriff that carried the big stick and had big heart to match. He ran from no one and he couldn't be bought out. Thank you Sheriff Buford Pussser for being the best Sheriff my part of the world will ever see again. Thank you for posting. While they were trying to get the car started, Pusser was beating both of them up through open passenger side window which led to Jimmy to yell out ... "I don’t wanna die in a Gremlin”. @@carolyngardner4999 While the movie portrays Bufford having a son and a daughter in real life I believe he only had a Daughter named Dwanna Pusser and I think she is deceased now. For all of those who are interested on Yahoo there is a forum about Buffords life etc. It gets down to the real facts from fiction. The movie had alot of fiction. I do research on true stories. On the day of the ambush it was told that his wife was going to leave him that day because she found out that he was cheating on her with a younger girl. There are videos of the re-enactment of the ambush on the forum I believe. Which shows that it would have been impossible to have occurred as Bufford said it did. It's ironic when Bufford says the car chasing them got beside him and 3-4 guys in the car with fully automatic rifles shooting at them. When you look at the real police car Bufford and his wife were in that day there isnt one bullet hole on his side of the door. And the other car was maybe only 8 feet away on a very narrow road. There is a hole in the back window of Pussers car which hit Pauline Pusser in the back of her head killing her. Because of so many inconsistencies in Bufford story they were thinking Pusser had something to do with the ambush and they had to shoot him too to make it seem like a real ambush. But Pauline new about some money laundering Bufford was doing and had threatened to turn him in so it is believed that Pusser had those guys do the ambush. There are many videos on the forum. I try to get to the true facts. So he might have been a good sheriff to some people sometime but it wasn't always peaches and cream. He was corrupt as you will see in the stories that were told by people who knew Bufford very well and the stories behind it.

Jimmy references this incident in two songs. Most notably (the second time) in a song called "Semi True Stories" on the album, Beach House on the Moon (1999). Sorry, big Buffett fan so I had to post this:
    Well, the picture is fuzzy,
    And the details are sordid.
It was on the same day
    God's Own Drunk was recorded.
    A walkin' tall sheriff
    And a big Cadillac
And me and my golf shoes
    On the hood makin' tracks.
    This daring young singer
    Was under attack.
And then there was the original mention from "Presents I Could Send You" on the album, A1A (1974):
There sits a fifth of tequila
God I swore I'd never drink it again
    But my last little bout
I had my hair pulled out by a man
    Who wasn't really my friend
And I know I'll never see him again
    Great video, Jacob!

I wish I knew you was here! I’ve lived in adamsville all my life. And even worked for Dawna Pusser at her restaurant. She committed suicide a few months back. Was really sad. But one of her daughters and 2 grandsons still live here. Would have loved to have met you!

Great stuff. As an Englishman, I can only dream of knowing anyone with a name like Buford Pusser. Sounds like an American character thought up by P.G. Wodehouse.

Isn’t it a great name? The woods here are full of them! One of my favorites is Harry Corn, who was a subscriber at my dad’s cable tv system in Waynesboro, TN back in the 70s.

Oh my goodness !! I use to go to school with a boy named , " Harry Bush " and my stupid sister use to tease that poor boy all of the time . She and I were so different growing up and we still are . I never would have said nothing to hurt that poor boys feelings .
