I'm a retired (40 plus years} photojournalist and this one of the best reviews on any photo product I've ever seen on UA-cam. I love the point about using the gear and NOT focusing on shooting and wasting time on charts. Shoot on brother.
Wow this is honestly one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. I appreciate that coming from someone with your experience. I just noticed that great photographers have never blamed their gear but worked with what they had.
I’m in the nearly the same boat; 40 year corporate, editorial illustration and studio guy. I’m not really into Fuji, but I bought the 18mm, then too many more, including the 16. Just sold them all, except the 18! I’m a Canon user and own all the Zeiss primes, my fav being the Zeiss 28 Distagon. It’s not about the gear as long as it doesn’t get in the way. Edit: but I must add, if a piece of kit makes exciting images, go for it.
Dude, thank you SO MUCH for this video!! I keep seeing all these technical reviews looking at brick walls and zooms to 400% only because in normal shooting two lenses are so close in performance. Like you said, take photos and get them as close to right as possible, then judge how the lens did when used properly. I'm kicking myself debating Micro Four Thirds, Nikon Full Frame (already own) and Fuji APS-C. Months of time spent trying to pick that right mix of lenses and bodies. In the end it may be an old X-T1, X-T10 and some great F2 Fuji primes along with a couple XC lenses for when I need a zoom (not pro work). So refreshing...just shoot images. That's it and I needed to hear it. You're the man!! Thank you sincerely.

I've had the 18 mm f2 for around 4 years - bought it when it was on sale new for $299 - Great lens and I've never understood the hate this lens has received. Sharp enough, wide enough, fast enough... great lens. Plus it's SMALL. The price wasn't bad either.
I totally agree. I have the lens and totally happy with it for pure photography purposes. Does everything well. I got it as an alternative to thr 27mm which is a bit tight when indoors for family photography/etc.
The 18mm at f2 creates this fabulous almost painterly like look to backgrounds. You can identify the scene and place but it softens it just enough to make your subject pop. You then put your camera and lens in your jacket pocket and continue with your travels.
Love you videos man! Love the way you don’t care about what famous UA-camr says about one lenses or another. Lost money while listening to them and not follow my vibe. Now selling two lenses to buy two other. As you said, I’ve lost money and I’ve learned the lesson! Thanks for being real. On my way to finally buy this badass 18 f2!
Bought it and sold it, two times. I could not resist when I found it used for 130€, bought it again for the third time and now I am focused on the 18/2, the 35/1.4 on the X-T2 and the X100v - everything is easy, lightweight and simple now. Thanks for the great review of the beloved 18/2 - it deserves it !!
Great review! I recently went to Japan and walked into the camera store with my eyes set on a different prime. Fortunately, I was able to test different lenses with my Fuji camera there. Took test shots, and immediately loved the photos taken with the 18mmf2, which I had never considered in the first place! I knew I’d get a lot of use out of it, so I got it and never looked back.
Funnily enough I am watching this rn looking at getting an 18, while the 16 1.4 is my FAVOURITE lens I’ve ever used. I want something that’s perfect for carrying with my every day on my xpro2, but I don’t think I’ll ever give up the 16 bc it’s just so special.
3 years later... I own this lens since 2021 and it contstantly sits on my X-T30. Great performer, very good portability. The only drawback: AF tends to stutter.
18 f2 is the most underrated Fuji Lens . I have shot many hours with it . No complaints what so ever! Like you said , I'm going to put this on my XPro3 9/10 more than my 16mm.
Here is follower #115 😀. I think you are becoming one of my favorite youtubers. Like your passion, your down to earth attitude and I like the way you shoot.
Great vid. Same thing for me. Never used the 16mm 1.4. Big & clumsy unit. Not wide enough when you want to go wide, and too wide for everything else. Bought the 18mm f2 and it’s now my favourite prime; I use it All-The-Time. Wouldn’t trade it for the 18mm f1.4 even if I got it for free.
Thank you so much for that ending of this video. I sold my 18f2 this spring and has regret it since then. Did it to finance a X100V and thinking about get the 18f2 again or the WCL to get that 28mm angle. More respect to the 18f2.
I think you sold me on this lens. As someone new to photography, I'm trying to find the best ways to spend a reasonable budget on primes that will serve me well for the type of shooting I'm interested in (travel, street, architecture, some portraiture). I've started with the XF35mmf2, which I really like, but now I want to add something with a wider FOV. And I absolutely love the short length of this lens for portability. And you've got me thinking about that Viltrox 85mm, too!
Man, I love this lens. My X-S10 with this lens and lens cap (not the hood) fits comfortably in my Moment sling bag, and that alone makes it worth owning for me. Great lens for the street!
So on point with the rant - I stopped caring about sharpness a long time ago; if people are giving a crap with how sharp a photo is in the corners, then the photo isn’t interesting enough! 🤙🏼
I just got an X-E4, after selling a Full Frame Nikon Z6. I have baby nieces growing, family and hobbies where I just want some portability and nice photos to look back on. I never really took the Nikon anywhere. It didn't inspire, it was heavy, bulky and I thought I needed that camera, lol. Why'd I get the X-E4? I know it's just marketing, but if "make more, with less," is accurate, it might well be the camera that gets me out of my way to explore this creative medium. Second hand and with the 27mm lens. I don't know if it's the lens for me, but there's only one way to find out, before (and like you say) I waste my money. So thank you. You've got yourself another subscriber. I need to change my thinking.
Absolutely loving your stuff man! As someone who shoots with Fuji stuff, I love hearing your thoughts. Keep up the great work! Inspiring me to keep going with my own videos
Good looks man! That's good to hear and let me give you a subscribe and a follow on your socials so I can support you! I'm all about community! What's your IG?
Hey Man just picked this lens up! Sold my XE2s to get The Xpro2 used ... which leaves me with my XH-1 and The Ricoh GRIII ... 35mm 2.0, 16.mm 1.4, 23mm 1.4 sold my 56mm 1.2 (regret) and my 18-135mm ...why am I telling you this, cause I got rid of gear I'm not using. Great review, I love this mighty little lens.
Be professional with what you have! That's bold man! Enjoy ur 18mm! I myself have been enjoying ricoh gr 18mm for years. Planning to get the xf18 f2 as well but still holding on as a new 18mm said to be released soon.
Thanks and yeah the 1.4 will be quite a bit bigger (rumored to be larger than the 23 1.4) but it'll be weather sealed and hopefully have some new focusing systems!
I have the XF16mm and it took me a while to warm to it but now I love it. However, I do not use it anywhere near as much as I should because of it's size and weight. Also, the XF60mm that they released at the same time as this 18mm lens is also a huuuuge sleeper of a lens.
It's not a great macro but the 60mm actually does produce great images and the bokeh is very pleasuring because it isn't too hard and has great shape. I totally agree.
I have to say I agree. I tried a few of the Fuji wide angles, including the 23mm f1.4 and initially stayed away from the 18mm, as it got a bit of a bad wrap in reviews for some reason. In the end I decided to try one, as I was interested in the small light package. All the rest have been sold now, its like the one I buy last is the one I should have bought first;-)
The 18f2 is a great lens. Owned one since the XPro1 came out. I look after my gear generally but I did drop the 18f2 on to a pavement when changing lenses and it survived without a mark. Bullet proof construction, lovely focal length and lovely images from it. It’s a bit noisy when focussing at times but I can live with that. I use it with an XPro2 and XE3 and it’s always with me. Great video. Subscribed 👌
It's worth noting that the distortion you didn't like in the 16mm was due to your placement as a shooter- not the lens. That's how nose enlargement and such happens. The 18/2 is secretly one of the best lenses in the Fuji lineup. Always happy to see it get some love 🙌
Perspective distortion is more than just close up portraits. Any photo of a person elongate extremities and facial features. It’s just a law of optics.
@@DeeRosa Yes. That is what I was saying. It was cited as distortion due to the lens, but it's the position of the photographer which causes it. Hence the need for telephotos - to relocate the photographer away from subject. Incorrect about any photo elongated extremities, though. Indeed compression causes the opposite effect as you move lower in FOV.
Couldn’t agree with you more. Just sold the 16 1.4 and purchased the 18 1.4. (I shoot at night quite a bit) Better corrected with a linear motor. I know you’re comparing it to the F2 version, but agree with regards to the 28mm focal length. Also, sold my 50-140 red badge and got the 70-300. Lighter, smaller and I’m more apt to take it out on a nature hike. Keep the content coming. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!!
I actually loved the 18 1.4 but just the size wasn't fun and I don't shoot much at night but yes. 28mm is lovely and I actually sold my 50-140 also so I feel ya in that regard.
I like the 18mm f2 also, When they first came out years ago, Fujifilm had $200 factory rebates and things were cheaper then. If you live in the San Antonio area, do you know Jessie Acosta? He wad a street photography channel about 6 years ago that I really enjoyed, but he stopped all of a sudden. Just curious.
I actually just moved here so I don't know him but I'll look him up! Yes I love the 18mm. Not to say there aren't better lenses (because they are) but people want it to be something that it's not everytime I hear a review. It's a great lens but when you want it to be a portrait lens or a macro or etc etc it'll always fail as will any lens.
I have the 16/2.8. Nice well built modern sharp lens. But i dont like the 24mm ff view and almost never use it. It stretches the image too much. I believe 28mm images look much more natural. Would of course be nice if they do a new version of the 18/2. Better af and slightly sharper, still made in Japan of course. But not holding my hopes they will do it. It oc urred to me that witn the crazy 40mp sensors, theyd be re-issuing a lens that probably struggles to resolve that sensor. So hopefully it'll be an 18 to go with my 14, 27 (voigt) and 56. Good vid.
I don't give a hoot about weather sealing or fast focusing. I've been using this very same lens for 4 years and it's much better now with IBIS bodies and 1.1 and 1.29 crop selectors which makes it a really versatile lens. The size and weight are God-sent, it almost makes the whole system worth it. Now with the XS10 it's my go-to lens for video by night and for casual and touristic escapades. The video focusing is excellent, no hunting no pulsing, just right and the IQ is phenomenal for video on the not too sharp side. I had it for 200€, biggest bargain I've ever had!
@@DeeRosa Bought it in Spain second-hand. They are not much more expensive now but are not very common in the second hand market, nobody wants to shed them apparently 😂.
Very good points bro! Expecially the size and carry around stuff. Also: Camerastyle... I am having a xpro. Why a camera with a retrolooking rangefinder and then pitting on a 16mm 1.4 monstet? Or even the 18mm 1.4...? The lenses look way to chunky for this sweet camera
I started out with a huge case of gas. But then I realized it's NOT about the equipment, it's about me/my client. I want equipment that will do what I want it to do... what I need it to do, and it took me a while to get over the whole "this will make you better." I made myself better. BTW hypocritically stating this: I just got my copy of the 18mm f2 last night in the mail. Complete with crushed lens hood. Cannot wait to take it out. :D
Love your ATT-I-TUDE :D Been going back and forth on 1.4 vs 2.0 on other focal lengths and everyone talks about the "magic" of the 1.4s. I looked at a bunch of shots on flickr and think I see more amazing shots with the F1.4s that just draw you in but plenty of outstanding F2.0 shots that have a lot of that quality too. And then there was a shot I LOVED and looked at info and it was taken with an 18-135mm!! Now, folks dismiss that as a amateur super-zoom travel lens. I own it and LOVE it and thought "guess I'm not *professional* enough to appreciate the difference", LOL. I've been blown away by the kind of photos I can get out of that lens and my lowly 27mm. So shoot what you brung I guess.
I LOVE the 18-135mm! It is sharp as hell and the perfect all around zoom. Honestly it's one that I'm considering buying JUST for a one stop travel. The only zoom lens besides the 55-200 that I recommend to people.
Great review! Recently seeing more people showing long overdue respect & love to the 18mmf2. It is absolutely my favorite Fuji Lens for all the reasons you expressed. It is the perfect compromise without having to compromise. I have about 4 friends I have introduced to the FujiFilm world and each one of them I insist they get the 18mm as their first if not only Fuji lens. With that being said, I bought the 16mm f1.4 well before I owned the 18mm. The 16mm is an amazing lens. There are two applications I hands down use the 16mm over the 18mm... A) Indoor Architecture/furnished space photos. B) Outdoors when the weather bad.... 16mmf1.4 / 18mmf2 / 23mmf1.4 / 35mmf1.4 / 60mmf2.4 that my fab five starting lineup. On another note, I have the original 27mmf2.8, that turd has no redeeming qualities hahahaha
that's a good lineup! i don't much care for the 16 or 23 as i never really reached for them in any application other than feeling guilty for not using them lol. haven't worked enough with the 60 to give an opinion but nice lineup!
@@DeeRosa There is certainly a division of use in the lineup, for the enjoyment of photography/street shooting/travel/vacation the 18mm & 35mm are my go to, they have so much soul and character compared to most of the other lenses. I like the fact that they have some much uniqueness, really feel like I can paint with them rather than just capturing. Totally content to have either one or both with me for personal use & work. As work tools the 16/23/60mm have been life savers when I need to shoot spaces or products. That 16/23 combo comes is so handy when I have to shoot large items in limited space (if I really need to take people pics the 23mm & 60mm are a decent portrait shooter in a pinch). It is close focusing of the 16mm that starts to shine in that limited space without getting too much distortion. The 60mm is probably the least covered and often overlooked lens in the community but it is my champ for studio product photography and for the size & price it is pretty amazing.
This is an great example of explaining why an older, less expensive lens can sometimes be the best choice. I own both Fujifilm 16mm primes, but I use my 18mm f2 way more often, for exactly the reasons you mention. Thanks for this video! A thought: When discussing lenses in the context of APSC sensor cameras like the Fujifilm X-Series, I encourage you to differentiate between “focal length” and “field of view”. In this video I think I heard you refer to the Fuji 18mm f2 lens as a “28mm focal length”, which isn’t true - this lens has a focal length of 18mm, which on APSC sensors gives you a “28mm field of view”. When I’m talking lenses with photographer friends who use “full frame” cameras, I’ll say that I want to have 28mm and 50mm fields of view (or 28mm- and 50mm equivalents), which for the X-Series means 18mm and 35mm focal lengths. Otherwise, great job with this video!
Thanks for this video, mate. It's helped me come to a decision regarding this lens. Could you tell me under what conditions do you get purple fringing and what is the term for that? Thanks heaps. I enjoy your content.
Yep, it’s a great lens. Nice rendering and color. Same focal length as the Very cool X70. I was really disappointed when the 18 1.4 came out.it’s just not a thing I would be able to be spontaneous with. If I want to go wide, I’ll go with the excellent 14 2.8. For people on the street, and story telling, 18. Great to shoot with a lens that gets out of your way.
Would you photograph an engagement shoot with the 18mm f2? I am considering using mine for a shoot or maybe renting/buying the 1.4. I don't NEED the 1.4, but I am wondering what you would do in this situation. I respect your opinion, long-time viewer!
I watched the video twice and answered my own question. I am going to use what I can afford, and not put that extra unneeded pressure. The F2 will suffice because I take good photos.
Dude this was a great video. Can you do one on how you compose with the 18mm pls? I’ve always shot with the 35mm 1.4 and I’m struggling with my 18. Thank you and keep posting. Subscribed
Yeah of course. The biggest thing that you'll need with the 18 f2 that you can get away with on a 50mm equiv lens is your shot HAS to be balanced. If both sides don't weight the same of the color isn't evenly distributed you're gonna be cropping in a lot.
Damn, I have the exactly same lens kit, 18 f2, 35 1.4 and 90 f2, so happy with this 3 lenses. Just want to know...what are your thoughts about the new 18 1.4?? Great review btw!
I never understood why people on UA-cam shits on this lens. I am DEEP in the Fujifilm X system and my first two lenses I got with my X-E1 back in 2012 was the XF35 f1.4 and the XF18 f2. I did not get them for fast action (that's what my Nikon DSLRs are for) or video. Those two lenses are still in my daily bag today as they cover everything I need. I have Yet to see anything bad with the 18mm, except for the occasional AF slight miss, but overall it's a Great street, documentary and intimate casual lens. I also have all the other fast prime lenses but those are for special projects and paid work and hardly ever gets the time my 18 and 35 does in my personal work. It also kills me that pixel peeping these lenses is a thing when almost everyone will not go beyond IG or any other online posting with their photos.
Well put and I have the same setup for all of my work as well. Yes it's unfortunate that people can write off a whole lens because it isn't as sharp as the 56 1.2 or even weirder photographers write off a lens because it ain't good for video or they don't like how it doesn't focus as quick as others... Just baffles me.
Since Ken "the angry photographer" says it's a bad lens, that's why so many shit on this lens. Ken is a fake! It is unbelievable that people listen to his shit. He's been caught lying and bullshit so many times. There are a few good Fuji channels on youtube . Omar is very good and there are a few more. This channel is good so far too, and hope it stays that way.
I've been eyeing up a used version of this lens and then I saw this video. Love your opinion on this , not just the lens, but your thoughts on working with the gear that makes you feel creative. My X-Pro3 was that for me. Cheers!
nice video man, i feel the same about the lens choice too. As great as the 16 1.4 is, my go to for a quick grab and go is my x70 and sometimes i pair it with my 35 1.4.
@@DeeRosa haha i been holding out for the longest time too til i found one on facebook for $270 canadian which is ridiculously low. Hopped on it, sold my x100f and 18f2 shortly after
Love the review. I think too many people concentrate on stats, and i was guilty of that for a while. I’ve since come to the conclusion that if sharpens at the corners in photo is bothering me, then the photo isn’t any good.
Thank you. Yes I was the same I listened to OTHERS opinions on issues that I never even bothered to look at when in actual use. Kind of a funny thing we do don't we? We judge things that we don't even care about just because someone else said it's unprofessional or bad. So I've stepped away from that train of thought and honestly my photos and the joy from it have gotten so much better.
A great review of this lens but, more importantly, some bloody awesome advice regarding kit purchases. Love the home-truths about composition f@ck ups too! 🤣 Subbed 👍
Thank you Dee for this video 🙏. I hesitated 🤓🙄for a long time whether I should buy an 18mm f2 for my Fujifilm xpro3. It's already a year since I have a 16mm f 1.4. It turned out to be too heavy for me. I'm a skinny girl :) Especially when I put freewheel filters on it. Would it be great to know what filters you use for your 18mm lens?
Glad you're enjoying it. It's a lens I never regret having in my kit for sure. I had a Tiffen BPM filter on it and that's actually it. With this lens I mostly would shoot at f4-5.5 during daylight and I'd be around f2 for evening so I didn't end up needing an ND filter for it. I hope you enjoy it. I love the weight size and most of all the focal length.
@@DeeRosa thank you for your quick reply 👍🏻 and great recommendations. I like how you select film simulations for Fujifilm Xpro3 - you have very beautiful footage. Especially with this 18mm lens. Thank you very much.
How is the OVF experience when paired with the X-Pro3? I hear that the edges of the OVF can be used as frame lines, not accounting for parallax correction... Usable?
I had 18f2 first then sold it to buy the 16f1.4. The 16f1.4 is miles better than 18f2 when we talk about the image quality but it's too big and too pricey. I didn't use it often so i sold it to buy the 16-55. You're right about the value of 18f2. The 16f1.4 is great but 'not that great'.
I have this lens and what I don’t understand is that the distortion correction isn’t correct. Shooting architecture there’s always that bulge. As a general lens though, I do like the size/weight
@@DeeRosa post correction. Fuji applies corrections to the RAW data and there is no option in ACR to undo the corrections. (Maybe there’s away to Modify the text file but I’m not really inclined to do this). It’s unlike with canon (the only other system I have at my disposal) where I can choose to activate the corrections or not. I don’t like this at all because you can’t actually see how good the optical design of their lenses actually are.
@@lindsaywebb1904 what editing software are you using? Also, distortion is just a thing. It doesn't mean it isn't a nice optical quality and it's parts of the optical quality. It's a part of the lens. Part of the quality. If you have it you have it. We never had lens distortion correction in film and even if you tried it'd be minute on the enlarger. You judge a lens on optical quality based on how it looks SOOC. Not after you've edited to have the same ascpects of a 50mm or some other focal length. You'll be good.
@@DeeRosa Adobe Camera Raw. I'm not sure quite what you mean with 'distortion is just a thing'. It's obviously a part of the optical design. When I first started using Fuji in (2012 with an xpro1) I bought a very expensive Fuji Leica M to XF Adapter so I could use my M lenses and they exhibited no noticible distortion but of course modern computational methods mean you can overcome the manufacturing difficulties of making lenses capable of reproducing straight lines, but my point with the xf18 F2, is that they've not done such stellar job.
I'm just saying that you wanting to eliminate the distortion to be able to tell it's optical quality is kinda odd considering that distortion is just a thing in lenses. It's only been the past 15 years where distortion elimination is big. Adobe doesn't play nice with fuji. Capture one can do better.
Just a side note, 16mm f2.8 is pretty nifty as well! Especially for the price. And financially a lot safer bet than f1.4 if you want to toy with that focal length :) Had I bought the f1.4 I’d feel a lot of pressure to make the most out of it, but the f2.8 version I can just put on whenever I want to get a bit off my comfort zone (i.e. 28mm-50mm range). That new 18mm f1.4 is pretty amazing, though. But I wouldn’t use it as an everyday carry -type of lens on my Xpro3. Definitely not a lens you’d like to have on for a night out with your fiancee.
Did you try shooting 16:9 on the 16mm? I think that really made the lens for me. Although I gotta admit I also like to compose that way on the 18mm, but not quite as often as with the 16.
MY one issue with the 18mm f/2 is it's marginal in IQ especially at the edges when shot wide open. I'm still on the fence about it as a classic 28mm equivalent focal length is something that appeals to me. In my work, I tend to shoot in marginal light in many instances and often shoot wide open and that degradation at the edges is pretty much a deal breaker for me even though the size of the lens is almost ideal. I'm left lugging around both the 16 and 24mm f/1.4 lenses because they are sharp wide open. I'm not a bokeh whore either, instead need to deliver solid images to my clients and the sharpness of those two lenses is what keeps me with them. I've debated the 18 f/1.4 as it would replace both the 16 and 23 lenses but again, still on the fence about it until I can get on win my hands to test.
Who needs sharp corners shooting f2? Is your subject on the edge and not in focus? Are your shooting charts? Why is everything same distance? Are you not layering? Can you show images I’m confused? If you’re shooting subjects why if they’re focus of image are they on edge with a WIDE lens that has distortion?
I'm a retired (40 plus years} photojournalist and this one of the best reviews on any photo product I've ever seen on UA-cam. I love the point about using the gear and NOT focusing on shooting and wasting time on charts. Shoot on brother.

That's it and I needed to hear it. You're the man!! Thank you sincerely.
Scribed because of the composition rant. I have been struggling with composition. The point you made about cropping is spot on.

I could not resist when I found it used for 130€, bought it again for the third time and now I am focused on the 18/2, the 35/1.4 on the X-T2 and the X100v - everything is easy, lightweight and simple now. Thanks for the great review of the beloved 18/2 - it deserves it !!
agreed 18 F2 is lovely & also i love how this man yaps !!
Dude your videos are great. I appreciate how straightforward and genuine you are. Keep it up!
I appreciate it.
Dude, you are an 18mm badass! Love your fight!
"Protect yourself from bad decisions..."... That is actually great advice... Thanks... Might borrow that line... Cheers 🙏🙏🙏
It's a legit thing we have to do!
Came for the lens review. Impressed with your thoughts regarding gears.
I enjoy it. The 28mm is one of my favorite focal lengths all time!
Preach, brother. Preach. I've liked a bunch of the other comments so I won't repeat. This was so refreshing to hear.
Much appreciated.
Here is follower #115 😀. I think you are becoming one of my favorite youtubers. Like your passion, your down to earth attitude and I like the way you shoot.
Much appreciated. Thanks for helping this channel grow. I did not expect to reach 100 followers in two weeks.
Your opinion makes so much sense! You helped to to decide, I am going for this lens
you nailed all points!!! 🎉😊 Words of wisdom 😇👍🏼⭐️
All great lenses. The good thing about being alive in 2021 is that there are NO such things as bad lenses - just BAD MARKETING.
About cropping.... Agree 100%. Thank you for your words!!
I really like your perspective, it's practical and real. The chart rant - hahahaha. Never got that!
The Lego comment lmao. I really love how you keep it real! Thanks for your honesty.
Excellent analogy and review❤
Me too man, 28 and 50 all the way!
It's a great combo!
Bravo, all ttue, thanks for the video! I found myself getting mad because of the music in that video, it's too intrusive imao
@@DeeRosa same to you! My IG is @frame.count
really enjoying the videos fr! Great perspective and great photos
Dude that was great. I very much enjoy the 18f2, rented the 16 once, won‘t use it again. Keep on shooting and rambling😄
Thanks 😂
Great video..I’ve had the 18 f/2 for years and looking back some of my best ever photos! Also glad I have the 35 1.4!
Love the 18/2 it's so versatile and NICE
I have to say I agree. I tried a few of the Fuji wide angles, including the 23mm f1.4 and initially stayed away from the 18mm, as it got a bit of a bad wrap in reviews for some reason. In the end I decided to try one, as I was interested in the small light package. All the rest have been sold now, its like the one I buy last is the one I should have bought first;-)
Best. Review. Ever.😊. Love your style!
Thank you and I agree. It's just a lovely focal length and I love the images do I can look beyond all the "negatives".
and I choose xf 16 2.8 pver the 16 1.4...so far very pleased with my choice..no regret at all
Great advice! Finally someone who convinced me to pull the trigger
I hope you enjoy your financial decision!
I’ve been thinking about the 18mm for a long time! Thanks for sharing bro!
My pleasure.
28mm is lovely and I actually sold my 50-140 also so I feel ya in that regard.
focusing on a Lego!!! Good job young man! You make great points
Much appreciated sir!
Great info! What camera and focal length do you like for video?
I prefer the 40mm focal length in videos!
$200?! WHAT A STEAL!
@@DeeRosa Bought it in Spain second-hand. They are not much more expensive now but are not very common in the second hand market, nobody wants to shed them apparently 😂.
As of the last 2 months now everyone wants the f2 after shitting on it for almost a decade
@@DeeRosa 🤣 indeed!
Can I just ask which bodies have 1.1 and 1.29 crop selectors?
Very good points bro! Expecially the size and carry around stuff. Also: Camerastyle... I am having a xpro. Why a camera with a retrolooking rangefinder and then pitting on a 16mm 1.4 monstet? Or even the 18mm 1.4...? The lenses look way to chunky for this sweet camera
KEEPING IT REAL FOR REAL!!!
Amazing review dude. Just amazing. Very well said.
@@hutch312 glad you found a good use for each!
love it I’m with you 100%
This is an great example of explaining why an older, less expensive lens can sometimes be the best choice.
I'm about to sell my 16 1.4......the 18 is a keeper:) thank you for this video! Keep up👌
Honest review
Thanks for this video, mate. It's helped me come to a decision regarding this lens. Could you tell me under what conditions do you get purple fringing and what is the term for that? Thanks heaps. I enjoy your content.
Glad you liked it. In heavy backlit shots when there are a lot of thin lines in the image (trees, stripes, etc) I get fringing.
Last sentence says it all. It just gets outta your way.
Love this lens. I subscribed!
The Fujifilm 18mm f2 is a great lens. Wide angle and compact.
👍for the tangent!
This is outstanding
Damn, I have the exactly same lens kit, 18 f2, 35 1.4 and 90 f2, so happy with this 3 lenses.
Just want to know...what are your thoughts about the new 18 1.4??
Great review btw!
Hey thanks!
Subscribed, great takes in this video
Hey thank you.
Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed!
You already sold me on the 35 1.4. Now the 18 f2 , my wallet can’t handle this 😂

nice video man, i feel the same about the lens choice too. As great as the 16 1.4 is, my go to for a quick grab and go is my x70 and sometimes i pair it with my 35 1.4.
I was trying so hard to get an x70 at a good price and keep striking out!

It's a great lens!
Get the 23mm 2.0.
Very interesting comment. I got your point! Thanks a lot.
Everyone says stay away from this lens , thats alright I like it very much !
I have 90 2, 35 1.4 and wait for this18 2. Today in 2024 to my xt5.
Just bought my XF18mm f2, yay!
So fresh, thx for sharing your thoughts. I do shoot Lego sometimes 😀😉👍🏽
That's nice.
Subbed. This opened up my eyes 👍
Appreciated!
Love your POV . Great video ! Don't get me wrong, I love my 16mm 1.4 but thinking because of xpro 2 of the 18mm ... what a waste of money ...
It's a great lens the 16...but if you never reach for it does it matter?
@@DeeRosa not enough I concede.
I also sold my 16mm f1.4. The focal length is not for me. Now that that the 18mm f1.4 is out, are you going to replace the f2 with the 1.4?
I will not. I value the size and formula of the f2 over the wr and faster ap.
A great review of this lens but, more importantly, some bloody awesome advice regarding kit purchases. Love the home-truths about composition f@ck ups too! 🤣
Subbed 👍
I appreciate it. I'm glad you enjoyed and I hope to see some of those photos one day!
preachhh 👏🏻
How is the OVF experience when paired with the X-Pro3? I hear that the edges of the OVF can be used as frame lines, not accounting for parallax correction... Usable?
Yeah so on the X-Pro 3 what you see in the OVF is literally what you get. Which makes it way easier to use and actually a joy.
@@DeeRosa That's wonderful news, because I own a X-Pro3 and purchased the 18/2 earlier today! 🤣
I think it's a perfect setup 😂
I had 18f2 first then sold it to buy the 16f1.4. The 16f1.4 is miles better than 18f2 when we talk about the image quality but it's too big and too pricey. I didn't use it often so i sold it to buy the 16-55. You're right about the value of 18f2. The 16f1.4 is great but 'not that great'.
Yes. It's a fantastic lens but unless you're a youtube reviewer it isn't that great.
I have this lens and what I don’t understand is that the distortion correction isn’t correct. Shooting architecture there’s always that bulge. As a general lens though, I do like the size/weight
In camera or post correction?
I’ve owned both. Just wasn’t feeling 24mm at the time because I didn’t use it and was used to 28mm focal length.
That was fast 😅. Was still editing to add a note about 18mm f1.4.
Lmao I respond fast friend. Slow day.
Do you not use off camera flash for client work? I mean if you don’t use flash go 1.4 but if you have multiple people in frame you risk missed focus.
