Hello Reggie! Thank you for your job! Every time very information! For your opinion which one is more sharp: Viltrox 27 mm F/1.2 or Fuji 18 mm F/1.4. Regards!
Hi Reggie, my copy of the lens makes a continuous sound of the electric motor running (zipping sound). I can hear it in recorded videos. Does your copy have the same? I'm a bit disappointed because no one mentions it in their tests on youtube.
Love the video! I have also owned the Nikon 28mm f1.8 which was my favourite lens which is super underrated. I have been chasing the dream to have an equivalent for mirrorless for work and personal use. I had the Leica Q which I enjoyed but sold for this lens. No regrets I rate this 18mm up there with the Leica and Nikkor. What’s your take on the 18mm vs the Nikkor 28mm f1.8 lens?
I own a bit of Fuji glass but the 18 and the 50 are always in my bag any time I go out to shoot. This is my tag team lenses of champions for me at the moment.
I’m still holding it down old school with the OG 35 and 56 as my favorites. Maybe the rumored higher resolution Fuji X offerings will make me upgrade some lenses. The 18 1.4 and 33 1.4 seem like great options.
Those two are amazing but I base my decisions on the sentimental value of the photos - I.e. what documents my kids the best. And at their current age, the 18 1.4, x100v, and 33 1.4 take the crown for me. Mauve when they get older my feelings may change. And ya know what, that’s totally fine with me. Appreciate you chiming in Richard! Also appreciate you appearing in the video and making me look good :)
I like that you leave out a lot of tech crap and show the lens in actual use. I just ordered this lens. Reviews of the f2 version were not very "complimentary."
Is this good for landscape photography as well? I am struggling with 1 lens for travel. Also, am i wrong to say that i can get the 18mm 1.4 and if i need to get a close up shot, i can just move myself closer to the subject to kinda achieve that 23mm composition?
Do the internal components shift when tilting the camera up and down? I rented the lens to test it out and I love it. I'm wondering if I was sent a bad copy.
As some people would say 'The future is now' and with time passing by, Fujifilm keeps coming with wonderful, hella sharp lenses and on and oooon ! I think, for the ones who were doubting of staying, they won't doubt longer haha. Your video was pretty neat and cool as always ! Divison, content, pace and quality. Everything was there. Keep it up Reggiiiiiie :D
Yes I’ve owned the 18 1.4 for a little while now. Love this lens! The only issue I have with it is the sloppy f-stop turn dial. I mostly use this lens for architecture and people, when they go together, or just architecture. I definitely love by 50 f2 and would not sell it, although I wish they would update the focusing speed. I still think the 18 1.4 is a little too wide for street photography with people. I’m thinking about getting the 33F 1.4. 🖖
This was great. Thank you. Been using the new 23 1.4 and love the sharpness, but miss the 18's story telling capability. Might switch to the 18, now that I've watched this. 👍🏽
hey - wonderful review, been looking at XF16-55mm f2.8 as a travel lens.... wonder if you've used that and how would you compare with XF 18mm 1.4? I know one is a prime, one is a zoom - but would still love to hear your thoughts. I primarily like doing street photos while travelling - this time going to Japan/Kyoto . TIA.
The 18mm fl (28mm in FF) is also my favorite angle of view back in Nikon and now in Fujifilm. I currently use the f2 version which pairs perfectly with the X-E4 as an everyday carry. The flare is amazing too as it actually glows yellow for some reason. This 1.4 version looks amazing which would be perfect if I was still shooting professionally. But since my priorities have changed, the f2 version works really well. I do hope Fujifilm updates it too with weather resistance and maybe better AF. Regarding the "snapshot" reputation for this angle of view, I believe it's actually what makes it better. It makes photos feel relatable and engaging.
Basically i love all the photo and the way u shoot using wider focal length. My request is, if possible for you to do tutorial. how to used 23mm /19 mm with minimal distortion😍
Another reason to like 18mm on Fuji is it gives a 66 degree horizontal Field Of View, the same as the FoV in most Call of Duty games, so it should feel very familiar to a lot of people.
Nice vid. This lens seems awesome! I'm not ready to upgrade to the new 23m 1.4 for the exact same reason you mentioned : the clutch mechanism for zone focus. On the other hand this lens does poorly in the video department like you said. Autofocus has poor performance and keeps hunting and making noise even on a fixed subject.
@@Reggiebphoto I think I'd keep this 23 on the xpro3 on which I don't need video but need the clutch and if the budget allows go for a better video lens on my xt4.
I understand linear motor is the way forward but gosh I wished Fujifilm can make a proper 18mm F2 manual lens with focal distance and focus tab. Clutch focus is cool but focus by wire takes away from one thing I like to do is refocusing in long exposure shots. Yeah I can get an adapter but would be better to get a native build with exif contacts. Maybe I can wish for something like that on the next gen of x100 serie cameras since Fujifilm is pretty bold with cameras like the xpro3? I think it would satisfy most documentary/street style shooters.
my thought is just take what they give us, and if you want something else, go find that thing and get back to shooting. sounds like you should be on leica digital
@@Reggiebphoto haha thanks for the response Reggie as I to agree with your philosophy and it sure does sound like Leica cameras would be a good fit. Truth is I love the Fujifilm ecosystem and the convenience of their film sims for personal documentation so this just sparks a good convo. Especially with the idea that they are pushing for higher megapixel cameras gives even more interest for cropping as you would do on a Leica Q2. Although one can argue why not opt for the gfx for cleaner output to crop from especially at higher iso (simply size and cost). Anyways it's only wishful thinking as I'm sure you've gave it some thought knowing you've shot on the 35mm mitakon for personal work. To reiterate I'll continue to keep shooting regardless especially on my x100v but it does make me excited to think about what direction Fujifilm is moving towards and how others want to see improvements. Anyways aside from that, rad video sharing your thoughts on the idea why you won't be upgrading the 23mm ii as it totally makes sense. Really the 18mm 1.4 is a marvel of a lens that ticks so many boxes considering video, sharpness, character, versatility, and speed. Perfect to both personal and working photographer. Can I ask where you got your inspiration for you intro? Reminds me a lot of the ballislife intro with a montage to follow, big fan. Definitely gets you hyped!
Reggie, what do you think about colors from this lens? I find them to be different that colors from other fuji lenses and I struggle to get good warm skin tones.
I have all three new lenses from Fuji and love the 23/1.4 WR the most. Do your 18/1.4 models make this loud clunk noise as well if the camera is turned off? I know it’s the linear motors but with the other two primes it’s nearly not noticeable. It’s quite annoying walking around with that 18/1.4.
@@REMY.C. yeah it’s exactly this. But the effect is not noticeable at all with the 33/1.4, it’s a bit noticeable with the 23/1.4 and a LOT with the 18/1.4.
@@ghas4151 I love all three of these lenses the same. And I use them for longer times to stick on the camera and change them after a while. If you pair it with the 50/1 and have both with you I would go with the 18. Then you have both extremes and that should work great. If you would just use one lens for a longer time I would go with the 23. Right now I have my 23 on my XE4 and do everything with it for 3 weeks now. It’s the feeling having just my X100V with me but with the loved aperture of 1.4. I miss that so often with my X100V!
Thanks Reggie. I have the original 23m 1.4 and love it as my main, especially lowlight prime. Now that I have the XT5, I may get either the 18m or the new 23m. I may decide on the basis of size and weight because I want to take it traveling. Thoughts anyone? Geoff
Not all age kids. Solo parenting with toddlers, the 90mm could be a safety concern if they run off. I prefer the 33mm 1.4 for tighter shots of my kiddos
I looking for a used 90 with the 35 and 14 that I already have. However I might change the 14 for the 18. 18, 35 and 90 habe the creamyest bokeh of all fuj.
The new 33 has quickly become my favorite Fuji lens and I've heard just as good if not better things about the 18. I'll probably sell my 16 1.4 and my 23 f2 (I have the x100v as well) and get this one. It looks incredible. Thanks for the great video!
Big thank you Reggie, really enjoyed your review, tasty pro level presentation with views, interesting topics with your own personal touch. I love sharp lenses with great shallow depth of field. I shoot winter sports, action sports in all types of conditions and locations from snow to water to dusty deserts with long focal lengths. But when i have the chance I love that perspective of a 16mm f1.4 and the 56mm f1.2 for close ups. It adds atmosphere for the viewer that allows people to recognise the back ground which can be :"bokeh blastered" I'll put my name on that word Heh or slightly distorted. When I shoot I want my audience to feel the closeness of the action hence getting in tight it allows the thrill to nearly touch you. I'm from a videographer back ground hence this obsession to be close to the action. I moved to the fuji family 5 years ago love the tactile feel and film sims i have fun taking weddings portraits and travel with my Fuji gear.. Ps I still have my Nikon gear but that's for Sports only..I think you might know why. Cheers from down under.
This was a great video 'Uncle' Reggie (except for the cussing). I didn't often enjoy your videos in the past, but this one certainly upped the quality - well done.
@@Reggiebphoto a few reasons. You had really good quality images to back up the claims about the new 18mm. The quality of the video was much better than the others. The big reason though that you didn't have a baby climbing over you. I know you are a parent and all of that, but it was very distracting to watch in the past.
Those videos were maybe 2 years ago. It’s been a while since my kids have been in the actual video. When you say others can you list which specific videos you’re referring to?
@@Reggiebphoto Yes they were a while ago Reggie, and I didn't watch anymore of your vid's for that time. However, now I'm enjoying your new content and gave a 'subscribe'. I'm also looking at your 'bootcamp' course. It looks one of the best I've seen in a very long time. I paid for Mitchellkphotos latest photo course recently and it was very disappointing.
@RonRacer100 set it to 18 for a day take photos. Then set it to 23 for a day and take photos. No zooming or cheating. After those two days pick your favorites and see whether the 18 or 23 wins. Let data decide.
It's like asking what's the best tool ever made. That question doesn't make sense without further context. Depends on the use you're asking. But if I had to choose one and only one it would be probably 16-55/2.8 or 35/2
I just wanted to say, I recycle a few old film cameras. The only times I ever found an 85mm in an old (wedding) kit it had a 28mm in the bag with it every dang time. The focal lengths stand the test of time.
Once again, you killed it with the production. 18 1.4 is probably the best lens out on the X mount . I currently own all 3 of the new 1.4s and it's the most fun to use out of the 3 for the challenging factor. As you say , it really does push you as a photographer and fills in that gap that I needed for replacing the 28 1.8G lens . I also agree that the 23 1.4 can be redundant in the kit if you already own the X100V .
Hey Darren, would be awesome to hear your take on the XF 23mm f1.4. How are you finding it compared to the 18mm? I’ve currently got the 50 f1 and looking for a wide lens to pair up with it but unsure which to buy. How do you find the overall image quality between the 18 and 23?
Hi, I also have this setup 18/1.4 and 50/1.0 (additionally a 35/2). Do you also have the camera with the 50/1.0 on the double strap? I am asking because it's not a lightweight lens.
Congratulations for this wonderful video review! Your photos are gorgeous!!! May I ask you what film simulation you used during the weddings??! Thank you very much if you will answer me! Grettings Roberto
The new 23mm f/1.4 is excellent and it's the most versatile lens like it was before! I'm seeing a new wave for the lens xf 18mm f/1.4, but this focal length is much closer to the focal length 16 than the 23... Maybe Fujifilm will launch another focal length not so wide like 20 to see another wave for this focal length! :-)
28mm eq makes better photos because you are forced to compose without blowing everything into butter or cutting it out of frame with closer focal ranges. I hated the X-70 when I first got it, but after a year my photos are objectively better for it. The struggle paid off.
Not really no. You "need" a middle length in there 18 33 56 would be a sweat trinity. You may find yourself in a too tight of a position for the 56 but a little to far for the 18. But having said that i can shoot the entire wedding on the 33 and often do

Appreciate you chiming in Richard! Also appreciate you appearing in the video and making me look good :)
Great video, this is definitely my next lens to pick up!
You won’t regret it 🙌🏽
Great video dude!
Thanks
The 18 is great!
Close focus, amazing colors.
From the man himself!
I really like your new feel to the videos.
Thanks bro. What do you like that’s new?
Hey Reggie. I just saw your video on the Voltrox 13mm f1.4. Of course this 18mm would be better but how do they compare?
I like that you leave out a lot of tech crap and show the lens in actual use. I just ordered this lens. Reviews of the f2 version were not very "complimentary."
I have a review on the f2 version too
Is this good for landscape photography as well? I am struggling with 1 lens for travel. Also, am i wrong to say that i can get the 18mm 1.4 and if i need to get a close up shot, i can just move myself closer to the subject to kinda achieve that 23mm composition?
I also love that you put so many of your own photos in the video. You are very talenter and it is a Joy and an inspiration to watch :-)
I'm not sure I follow. What do you mean by "own" photos?
@@Reggiebphoto I’m just referring to photos that you have taken yourself 😊
Oh gotcha. You mean this isn’t typical of lens reviews? Haha
Would you suggest that the 18mm f1.4 is sharper than the 16-55f2.8 at 18mm ?
I’m not sure. I’ve never tried the 16-55
Best review I've seen of this lens.
That means so much!
Hello Reggie is 18mm is good enough for interior photography?
good yes. wide? depends on your taste and the interior size.
@@Reggiebphoto first off all thanks for the rply, the interior is a Hotel room. If 18mm is not wide enough I'm planning to buy the 16mm of sigma.
I would think a 10-24 with a good tripod is your best bet for interiors
@@Reggiebphoto thank you very much Reggie, love watching your channel I'm learning lots of things.
Thanks for tuning in
Do the internal components shift when tilting the camera up and down? I rented the lens to test it out and I love it. I'm wondering if I was sent a bad copy.
It’s the LM mechanism
@@Reggiebphoto so this is normal? Thank you
Yup
As some people would say 'The future is now' and with time passing by, Fujifilm keeps coming with wonderful, hella sharp lenses and on and oooon ! I think, for the ones who were doubting of staying, they won't doubt longer haha. Your video was pretty neat and cool as always ! Divison, content, pace and quality. Everything was there. Keep it up Reggiiiiiie :D
Thanks Brian! Appreciate you always showing up for my content 🙌🏽
What’s wrong with the aperture ring?
@@Reggiebphoto
Too sloppy, I like something with a little more resistance. It’s too easy to flip into another aperture setting.
How does it compare to the new 23 and to the sigma 16?
Would absolutely love to see a comparison between this and the X100v with the WCL x100 ii 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for this. I’m probably buying this lens today. Loved your input.
Sweet! Be sure to use one of my links if you can
This was great.
Thanks for sharing!
All the photos amazing! Can you do tutorial or real story to capturing using wide lens. Example 23 and 18.
I’m not sure what you’re asking. Can you rephrase your question?
Basically i love all the photo and the way u shoot using wider focal length. My request is, if possible for you to do tutorial. how to used 23mm /19 mm with minimal distortion😍
I’ve already made a wide angle tutorial: ua-cam.com/video/KjXlnEwj9zk/v-deo.html
@@Reggiebphoto OMG how is this happen., hahaha., i been following your Channel, IG,FB etc.
This is a really old video haha
Another reason to like 18mm on Fuji is it gives a 66 degree horizontal Field Of View, the same as the FoV in most Call of Duty games, so it should feel very familiar to a lot of people.
Nice! I didn’t know that
Do you get those cool star effects on lights?
So what’s more important then?
I just found a song I liked and rolled with it. I filmed the broll shots just randomly in my office.
Fuji just has an immense range of options now, and more on the way... Quite impressive
Yup. I agree for sure
Beautiful shots!!!!
Thanks!
Reggie, what do you think about colors from this lens? I find them to be different that colors from other fuji lenses and I struggle to get good warm skin tones.
What lens are you comparing to?
@@Reggiebphoto, I had both 16 1.4 and old 23 1.4
Don’t find my 18mm 1.4 to have drastic color difference from those two lenses
I have all three new lenses from Fuji and love the 23/1.4 WR the most.
Do your 18/1.4 models make this loud clunk noise as well if the camera is turned off? I know it’s the linear motors but with the other two primes it’s nearly not noticeable. It’s quite annoying walking around with that 18/1.4.
It’s the lm motor. Don’t worry about it
I guess the glass elements are not "parked" and move when the linear motor has no juice.
@@REMY.C. yeah it’s exactly this. But the effect is not noticeable at all with the 33/1.4, it’s a bit noticeable with the 23/1.4 and a LOT with the 18/1.4.
What about the 23 do you prefer over the 18? I’m trying to decide between them to pair with the 50 f1.
Odd ball question! Where do you rent a lens from? Best go-to place? Thnx!
Borrow lenses is who I usually use
Thanks Reggie. I have the original 23m 1.4 and love it as my main, especially lowlight prime. Now that I have the XT5, I may get either the 18m or the new 23m. I may decide on the basis of size and weight because I want to take it traveling. Thoughts anyone? Geoff
Just checked. They are almost identical in size. Do others have comments as a prime travel lens? Thanks. Geoff
Reggie, any update on 13mm f/1.4 by Viltrox?
Review is in the works.
@@Reggiebphoto Thank you so much :-) Can't wait.
No love for the 90mm? It's probably my most used lens. Bought the 18mm 1,4 today though. That's going to be a nice pair I think.
I owned it. Reviewed it and sold it. I don’t prefer telephotos but def a great lens
@@Reggiebphoto i think it's great for kids outdoor.
The 18 + 33 combo is a force to be reckoned with
It's basically what I did, I enjoy the combo.
So good
I personally dislike the bokeh of the the 33 and will stick to the 35 creamylishous

For weddings, would you say this is even better than the 23?
Hey Reggie, where do you rent lenses from?
i rent lenses from borrowlenses.com
Thanks for the feedback. What made you enjoy this one vs others
@@Reggiebphoto
a few reasons.
😳 - A comment from the 🐐
In YOUR opinion, what is the best lens Fujifilm has ever made and why?
It's like asking what's the best tool ever made. That question doesn't make sense without further context. Depends on the use you're asking. But if I had to choose one and only one it would be probably 16-55/2.8 or 35/2
You can only ask, "what is your favourite lens?", as there is no such thing as a "best lens".
Oh darn :(
I just wanted to say, I recycle a few old film cameras. The only times I ever found an 85mm in an old (wedding) kit it had a 28mm in the bag with it every dang time. The focal lengths stand the test of time.
True that
I have used it for weddings the past few weeks and oh my god it’s away sharper and quicker than my 16mm 1.4 I’m amazed

Thanks for making me question my recent purchase of a 16 1.4 lol.
Good one uncle Reggie 😊

28mm eq makes better photos because you are forced to compose without blowing everything into butter or cutting it out of frame with closer focal ranges. I hated the X-70 when I first got it, but after a year my photos are objectively better for it. The struggle paid off.
I agree ☝️
So the new 18-1.4 and the new 56-1.2 cover pretty much everything :)
Not really no. You "need" a middle length in there 18 33 56 would be a sweat trinity. You may find yourself in a too tight of a position for the 56 but a little to far for the 18. But having said that i can shoot the entire wedding on the 33 and often do
