I'm writing this from El Salvador. My wife's family lives here and we are visiting. I've been coming here for 10 years, and although I've never felt unsafe here, the change in this country over the past few years is nothing short of astounding. High rises are going up, people are driving Audis and Jaguars on the roads. Many of the local corner stores have removed the bars across their doors and the suburbs are spreading outward into areas once deemed too dangerous. Gastropubs, luxury hotels, you name it, its happening here. New libraries, hostpials and public parks are being built. And yeah, for us, it's exciting to see. No country would ever willingly give this up to go back to terror in the streets. Thats why 85% voted.

Average people were gangsters by default because of poverty. Being a criminal wasn't a choice in El Salvador, but it is now. The previous governments were just corrupt and basically gangsters in suits, helped drug lords to move their products through the borders.
@@Joelvete6 Undoubtedly, the situation has improved significantly under Bukele's leadership. However, there's still much work to be done. The next term should focus on enhancing infrastructure and implementing economic programs to foster growth. For decades, corruption, violence, and oppression have hindered the country's progress. El Salvador's natural beauty remains untapped due to the actions of these criminals. But what a beautiful time to visit a country beginning from zero again.
This is the type of thinking we need more of. This isn't about rehabilitation, this is ultimate deterrence from others following this way of life. I just got back from a vacation there and I felt safe the entire time! I was nervous, but after visiting it totally changed my perspective. I would go back. Not to mention how cheap it is and they use American currency!
Honest answer is that it isn't actually cheaper in the long run. People need a target to "other", you get rid of your criminals and the remaining people will stop working together against their "common foe" and need to find a new one. Commonly recognized foes create commonly recognize goals which results in an economic boom.

I remember one of his speeches addressing the countries and activist groups saying it’s inhumane. He said that if they care so much he will ship them to their country for a 2 for 1 deal if they cared so much. And if one of those gang members outside killed a cop or a military member that day the inmates will have no food not even a grain of rice and see how long their homeboys last. He’s great 😂😂😂

In the 70's and 80's NY City was riddled with crime and drugs and they passes stop and frisk laws, that BLATANTLY targeted Latinos and African Americans in the inner cities and as a African American it was clearly rooted in racism and bigotry and quite frankly most crime laws are in the USA for that matter considering that White Americans due the vast majority of crime. That being said some 25 years since those laws were implemented, NYC is the safest big city in America, by the numbers, sometimes harsh polices work.

Locking up gangsters and murderers is a far-right position? Is that what Joe's insinuating? I always thought locking up societies worst criminals was a common necessity for it to function. El Salvador is the perfect example of what it is like when criminals flourish vs when they are inprisoned.
Now that's what a *LEADER* actually is.. Most presidents or either too immersed into politics, are either too scared or simply have their own interests.. I wish more countries could have courageous leaders like him.. Courageous in general, not just about making prisons and convicting everyone

I went to El Salvador last summer for 10 days (with a friends family that were citizens but lived in the US) and it was the best trip i’ve ever taken in my life! Beautiful country and so much to do for such a small country!
i went many years ago, but agree, of all the places i've been it was at the top.
*What that dude failed to mention, in his awe and overt focus on the imprisoned murderers of MS-13/18th St (INSTEAD OF THE VICTIMS) is that El Salvador went from being the murder capitol of the world, to LITERALLY the safest country in the ENTIRE WESTERN HEMISPHERE.* This is an irrefutable fact! As a matter of fact, the entire country has gone for exactly 557 days without a single murder as of Tuesday Feb 20th 2023.*
*My family is from El Salvador. I follow the events by watching "Canal 10" (Salvadoran TV) online, and I keep tabs on the stats published by virtually all organization WITHIN THE COUNTRY and Spanish media. ... I avoid foreign/western media because of their overt propaganda and crying for the rights of vicious murderers whilst ignoring the victims and the atrocities committed for twenty five years, leaving over 120,000 dead people.*

That's why it is %84!
El Salvador has one of the most kind and welcoming culture there are. Even when things were bad we still smiled so now we're filled with joy and you can feel that collective energy.
I fully support this. It’s simple…don’t be a criminal.
So simple, not. What a simple minded thing to say
Maybe you can’t hear. They are locking up EVERYONE. Even if they aren’t criminals
Yet the government is the biggest criminal

El Salvador was unlivable for average people, due to crime and gangs. It's sad that they had to go to these lengths, but it's apparently working.
What’s sad about locking up MS13 and 18st gang members?
Average people were gangsters by default because of poverty. Being a criminal wasn't a choice in El Salvador, but it is now. The previous governments were just corrupt and basically gangsters in suits, helped drug lords to move their products through the borders.
It's still a very poor country though
@@Joelvete6 it has a chance at growth now
@@Joelvete6 Undoubtedly, the situation has improved significantly under Bukele's leadership.
It worked on organized crime in NYC in the late 80s/early 90s, it needs to be even worse today. But we'd have whining activists, lawyers and lawsuits stopping it. Well done to El Salvador!

The USA also already incarcerates more of its citizens than any other country in the world.

Honest answer is that it isn't actually cheaper in the long run. People need a target to "other", you get rid of your criminals and the remaining people will stop working together against their "common foe" and need to find a new one. Commonly recognized foes create commonly recognize goals which results in an economic boom.

Locking up gangsters and murderers is a far-right position? Is that what Joe's insinuating? I always thought locking up societies worst criminals was a common necessity for it to function. El Salvador is the perfect example of what it is like when criminals flourish vs when they are inprisoned.
