  • Only a minority of Puerto Ricans support independence today. But those who still support that option say that's because the U.S. persecuted independence supporters for decades.

Unfortunately, like a lot of the lefty progressive produced stories out there on Puerto Rico, it is incomplete information. Ms. Bianca leaves out how Luis Munoz Marin, a former independence advocate, worked with federal authorities to unfairly silence the independence movement. I would love to see a documentary outlining how the PPD is blocking a permanent resolution to the status question.

My grandfather tells a story about how owning a Puerto Rican flag, picture, sculpture, etc was taken as a symbol of being a part of the independence movement and you would be arrested. His friend carved him the Puerto Rican flag out of wood and my grandfather hid it inside his pillow. Years later, he painted multiple flags on the walls of the house he built. He speaks on how he was terrified of being drafted. I never realized the possibility that he himself probably really wants Puerto Rico to be "una nacion libre " and sovereign. Thank you for this video.

You won't find a period in US history that matches the current level of un-American sentiment in the general public and general leftist advocates haven't been this prominent, despite these comings, Puerto Ricans still generally support either to be a commonwealth or a state, why?

@@bobbyboy1797Because people want the current benefits of citizenship, everything from not needing a passport to fly over to see their family to government benefits to the Puerto Rican economy relying on the US, as a colony.
The point is that's not a great position to be in for any country that would want independence in the first place. China bor the US would accept these circumstances if that roles were reversed. Weird to think the idea scenario is relying on another country for your needs.
You obviously need to build a strong local system first, then have a transition period first if you went independent, if you wanna cause as little trouble as possible. We're not in that position today, hence the support for the more immediate plans.
Amazing how we can live thousands of years before most European countries or the US even existing, and after 125 years of US colonialism, it's like we just don't know how to live outside of that.

Thanks for your work! An important detail that is rarely discussed is that not all independence supporters vote in elections because they believe it is only playing the game of the colony. Therefore, the percentage of votes the pro- independence party gets is not an accurate representation of support for independence. I would say that supporters of independence are much more than what people tend to think. It's a very complex issue that goes beyond political parties.

I’ve been around and seen a lot, and yes, I missed the days of the hustle and bustle at the Plaza Mercado, where everything is home grown, fresh chicken, pork, and beef from the farms. Like I said, I’m not Puerto Rican, but it hurts to see what Walmart and others(Federal Govt) have turned the people into, dependency, a card to buy food from Walmart at ridiculous prices. I would've like to see the topic of taxes discussed a bit further. Puerto Rico has the same limitations and taxation on exports and imports as any other state of the union. If you're referring to the Jones Act of 1916, it restricts all states, including Hawaii and Alaska, to only use vessels with an American flag. As you say in the island, "lo que es igual no es ventaja". However, the states pay federal income taxes while Puerto Rico is exempted, but in turn receives billions of dollars from the American taxpayers. Who is exploiting who? By the way, Hawaii and Alaska also complain of this law, and whenever the economy is in crisis, many other states complain of the law as well, and a few times over the years the president had suspended the law for a while.

I was born in PR and grew up in NY..I recently went to PR for 5 months and got well acquainted with the struggles of everyday life and the lack of information given to the locals re the status issue that AOC, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, Congress woman from NY, has brought to the forefront of the political conversation. It is my goal to start a Bernie-Like movement and get all PRs to wake up and smell the roses. We need to speak with one voice only and stop the divisive bickering that keeps us stuck in the same old thing; Estado Libre Asociado, which is neither libre or asociado. According to the UN (United Nations) PR is a commonwealth, however, PR does not fit the definition of commonwealth: the dictionary defines a commonwealth as an agreement made by two sovereign nations for the equal benefit of both countries. I submit the idea that PR must fight for sovereignty and then become a true commonwealth of the US by choice.

This young lady does quality, top-tier work. I feel like I'm watching a major news network when I watch her videos. She is very good, and it's obvious that she's very intelligent. Much much respect to this orgullo Boricua. I hope she could achieve her dreams, and get to whatever level she strives for.
Pedro Albizu Campos is a topic that is dear to my heart. I didn't know anything about him, until pretty recently, when I watched a video about "La Historia de Puerto Rico." He's kinda been erased from the history books, kinda like Nikola Tesla. I was amazed that I went most of my life without knowing anything about either of them. Albizu to me is the most brilliant and impressive Puerto Rican ever in the history of PR. But what a sad and tragic life! I am such a fan, and admire him sooo much. It saddens me to think that most Puerto Ricans see him as the devil incarnate, or at very least, the bad guy.
I'm conflicted on his views. I've always been brainwashed into believing that PR would be nothing without the US. But if Albizu thought that independence would have been best for PR, I can't help but at least open my mind to the idea. He was far more brilliant than me, so if independence is what he wanted, there must be something to it. Or maybe, with proper leadership, independence would have worked back then, but now we might be too far gone, and too intertwined with the US. I don't know. All I know is that Albizu was a brilliant mind, and an absolutely amazing person. Everybody, especially Puerto Ricans, should study the life of Albizu, and at least know the details of his life and struggle.

    Saludos,
    Gracias nuevamente!

Very informative, love the way this video is done and presented as well as the rest of the series. In my opinion, everything is a theory, PR making it as an independent nation is a theory, obtaining statehood and being a state of the US, which supposedly will make things better in Puerto Rico economically and politically is also in theory. Having a better and improved Commonwealth status that is going to function better is a theory, and having a working Free Associated Republic that can depart at any moment is also in theory. No one really knows what’s best. When I hear one side individually expressing itself, I tend to agree with it until I hear the next. One day one of these theories will have to become a fact, which ever it is, and we must receive it, and finalize this dilemma once and for all. One thing is certain, once that happens, whichever route PR takes, there won’t be a turn back, but in the meantime, I’m afraid things will remain the same for this generation. My love to PR, I love visiting the island every year, is always an experience.

Topics like this are controversial but very necessary to present. For the longest time Puerto Rico has been in the middle, not a republic nor a state. And like Emilio Pantojas said we like the benefits, and that’s why most Puerto Rican’s will just settle, but we deserve to have more than just one option, and actually let us decide for what’s best for Puerto Rico and future generations.
Many are prepared, well educated people, yet they have to flee for a better income, and a better life just because Puerto Rico’s corrupt system has no space for growth.
Times are changing, Puerto Rico’s future is in our hands.

Estoy de acuerdo contigo no va a tomar un partido y menos el independetista.. Va a tomar a un individuo (sea hombre o mujer) de buena voluntad, que no se deje corruptir por el dinero y con la voluntar de poner la isla por delante.. /
Independence in the 20's or 30's is a different world than what it would be today! As we see in the history of many south american countries and even jamaica a couple of decades ago (these examples involve corruption, dictatorships and other illegal involvement) In todays age independence for certain countries leaves a vacuum of power in which powers involving great amounts of money as in the illegal drug industry or a man with dreams of being a dictator see a way in, and will actually get it if anyone bothers to search those suggested examples. (jamaica a couple of decades ago aprox was rescued by the US from drug overlords that where getting to large for the island gov. and they called for the US to help which they did.. Just a decade or so ago it was discovered that the president of mexico had been bribed by a drug lord for 100mil. Even in PR when there is a professional drug hit the police are no where to be found) So you see if there ever was a vacuum of political power in certain countries the power of billions in drug money and those with dreams of dictatorships would be sure to follow in.. I am Puertorican and I am aware of these facts in history but I am also well aware of the ways of the world today! Today in the US the gov just relived itself from trump a man who did everything he could short of a military coup to stay in power all over money. So again what independence for certain countries might of been is far away a different world than what it could become today! This said these past tragic historic events that occurred in PR in years past are brutally unfair, wrong and devastatingly sad moments in history.

My mother's ancestry is from Portugal and Spain, but she was born in PR. My father's side has Taino roots from PR. I was born in Brooklyn, NY. I grew up in NY. I never learned any of this history until some years ago. I feel divided between Spain and Puerto Rico. I love both cultures.

Independence will never ever happen. Whenever that day comes it will be the biggest regret any island will ever have in history.

¡Excelente!

I think the people of Puerto Rico should look to a former colony of the US, that too fought for independence. And that country was my country, the Philippines.
One of our famous nationalist leaders was Manuel Quezon. And he once said "I would rather have a government run like hell by Filipinos than a government run like Heaven by the Americans, because no matter how corrupt a Filipino government might be, we can always change it".
    Take this from us 🇵🇭 🤝 🇵🇷
