Great explanation! Would adding grog also help reduce the warping of pieces during firing?

I was wondering if you could do a video on glazing techniques. It's probably the thing I struggle with the most. At the studio I go to I ask the instructors and they just stare at me and change the subject. I wash the dust from my pots. mix the community glazes into oblivion, dip my pots for 3 to 5 seconds and I get trash. Others at the studio make magic using the same glazes and combos. What am I doing wrong???? We have cone 6 and a cone 10 gas kiln. I have used Amaco glazes and the studio made bucket glazes. Sometimes the glazes apply watery and sometimes they are thick and crack off but as I said I mix and mix and mix and I wash the dust off my pots and they are dry when I apply. I'm not the only one at studio but it seems there are only a few of us in this struggle. HELP, Sensei. Please?

Omg I had grog and everything was fine and then the next batch had no grog (for some reason) and it was so much harder to throw tall vases without the top flailing and collapsing. So I've been trying to throw with the clay a bit firmer. Does that help? Or you must have some grog to really help with building tall vases?

Clay with no grog in it such as porcelain definitely takes a certain amount of respect to handle . I wouldn't go as far as saying it's only for experts or masters but I definitely wouldn't give porcelain to someone who's trying to learn how to center. It does make things a bit more difficult

I once took some of the black mineral from the shore of Lake Tahoe home and wedged it into my clay body. I threw a large pot and glazed it with a mat beige glaze. It came out like freckles but darker. cone 10.

A consistent thing that happens in firing pottery is, usually the higher You fire the darker things will get.
This is echoed throughout most clay bodies you will fire even that of porcelainous or like clay bodies.
It's good to know this stands true even with random stuff you find on the beach

This was great, I understood the concept, but did not realize the range of grog. Some of the sculpting grog is huge. & Because you mentioned DF... I was wondering if I could mix dragon fruit with the plain porc it's made from to marble or just even decrease the speckles for a few pieces? & How can I find out what the base clay is? Is it listed somewhere on IMCO's site? Hope you, wifey, and the princess are having a good weekend!

I knew what the bass clay was because the company essentially just told me but most companies who make a grog variation of a clay are just adding grog to that previous variation.
B-mix is a fantastic note because it's really just bmix and the grog variation is just called bmix with grog.
It's not always that clear cut but most companies will tell you if you ask.

@@EarthNationCeramics Oh duh, didn't even think to ask.. I forget that not every company is some giant corporation that doesn't respond or care. Ty!

Thank you! I’ve only done basic ceramics classes with no choice of clay body. Once I started watching pottery videos I was wondering what on Earth grog meant!

Thanks for the video! Does grog help with warping? I’ve made a few platters and they all come out twisted. I was using Standard 365 porcelain.

Please god don't put B-mix smooth. I'm sure you called it that throughout the while video, but it's just B-mix. I work at a clay store and everyone comes in and wants B-mix without grog and I just don't understand. It's like saying burger no cheese, because cheeseburgers exist. Even though cheeseburgers are an addition to a hamburger. Also it's called B-mix cause the creator of the recipe last name was Butt.

I'll tell them to ask for butt mix from now on just for you;)
