We have a silkie rooster who is a spiritual brother to Brad. We've probably had close to 20 roosters of various breeds over the years and this is by FAR the meanest rooster we've ever had. The saving grace to our silkie is he is so inbred that one of his eyes is kind of turned 90 degrees from how it should be, which makes him horribly inaccurate. He can see everything, he hates everything, he attacks everything, but he can't hit the side of a barn. We would have been sentenced him to the cooking pot a long time ago if he wasn't the most entertaining thing in the yard.

Amazing woman, ive never had a silkie, but I've had many roosters. If you find being attacked wears thin, there is an old teaching tool that has often helped me. When lovely brad attacks you, gently hold him upside down and tucked under your arm until he calms. Then place him on the ground and go about your day. Repeat as necessary, but USUALLY only has to happen 3 or 4 times...although i had one stubborn Cock named Darnell that I carried around while doing chores one-handed for two days before he admitted that I was yard boss. He was a gorgeous boy that eventually lost a battle with an owl hunting long after dawn. He attacked the owl that was going for his hens. That was Darnell. I still miss him.

The technique that I have found that works for me with the silkies is mimicking the dominancy. What I mean is you grab them hold on to their back with one hand and make them basically sit down on the ground with the other hand you grab the back of their head neck area and gently put their beak to the ground and hold it until they submit. I had a Brad, he got broke of that real quick.

    • @karenrandall8375

My grandmother had a large white rooster named White Cloud. He was very mean. Think Brad on silent mode doing speed. He'd attack anyone within his running distance. You didn't have to do anything. Just sitting there or standing in the yard. He'd cross the yard without a sound and flog you as long and hard as he could until you managed to remove him. He seemed enjoy leaving us bloody. Once he split my grandmother's forearm from her elbow to almost her wrist! One day grandma had enough and met his violence with a bat. She threw his corpse away saying he was just too mean to eat.

Two suggestions for dealing with your attack tribble ...
[1] Wear boots with a big snake's head painted on the side. Sensible birds give snakes a wide berth. Especially big, venomous looking ones.
    If that fails, then:
[2] Wear shoes shaped like Velociraptor feet, so you can fight back. If necessary, fit titanium claws.
Just remember ... have you ever seen Brad try to pick a fight with Karen? 😀

I had a rooster that I had to put down recently because he got so sick and he wasn’t getting better despite an expensive vet bill and the interventions they gave me for him. I was heartbroken. I hatched him and hand reared him. He was lovely. Everyone loved him. Everyone at the vets office cried when we put him down. He’d sit on everyone’s shoulder and just chill.
He would challenge me quite a bit but I know that’s because I was always around the hens and they treated me like I was the rooster so I was a threat.

We had a rooster that knew exactly how far you could walk out into the horse lot and he'd be able to run out and kick the living crap out of you before you could get back to the barn or climb a fence. He would even hide so when you looked for him - didn't see him - and thought you were safe to walk out there - he'd still get you!

Hold Brad as you were doing from the video as much as you can. Silkies are typically a nice mild breed, because they get handled a lot when they are younger birds. After their imprinting stage is over of course, but as soon as possible after that. Poor ol' Brad was probably neglected as a youngn' and it stunted his development.
As much as you can now, when you're in his sight, pick him up and hold him tucked under your arm and speak low and sweetly to him.
He should calm down and make an effort to listen to you. Also, sing to him. Our chickens loved it when we sang to them.
Our hens were so gentle that I, a three year old, was safe to put my little hand and arm under them on their nesting boxes, to collect the eggs.
He probably got too psychologically messed up from the previous owners. But it couldn't hurt to try anyway 😜😁✌🏼

Honestly, I don’t know how you don’t punt him across the yard, and that is coming from an animal lover who loathes to squish spiders even though I hate them. At least spiders have never actively gone out of their way to harm me unlike Brad. You deserve a medal for your compassion and Brad deserves some jail time for GBH 😂.

I asked my dad if he had any suggestions that might help you. It involved an axe though so 8 won’t share that one (Hes 84 so he’s a bit old school 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣). Reading online it seems doing what you do with Karen is the way to go. Don some wellies or knee pads and get to standing your ground💪 Also read that holding onto them calmly like you were in this vid for 20-30mins came help teach them all is well too if you do it often enough. Good luck🤞💜

I’ve used the bath technique. You put everything but his head in a tub of water (during warmer weather) and hold him there until he’s calm. The worst one I’ve ever had needed three baths over seven days. Then he was much less aggressive with the humans on the property.
