With racial tensions being stoked by Donald Trump, more African-Americans are exercising their second amendment rights and exploring every option when it comes to legal firearms. Complex’s Pierce Simpson spoke with prominent figures in the African-American community about the effects of gun ownership and the checkered history America has had with Black gun ownership.

I'm a Black man born and raised in California and I moved my residency to Utah. I recently bought my first gun a CZP-10 F. Then last week passing through Wyoming I bought an AR-15 style rifle. I truck drive cross country. It's a little risky for me but I'm glad I got it now. I'm eventually getting my ccw. I don't want a major racial confrontation to go down. Hell I had a baby by a White woman and I made friends with people of all races. I'm a regular guy. But sadly I know I'm a target because I'm Black. Driving across the country I gotta know the gun laws of every state.

even then on average in urban areas it takes 8 mins for police response and 15 mins in rural areas so you could be fucked by the time the police get there if its a serious threat

@@katashi222 well, on average, it takes 8 minutes for police to get to a situation, in the inner city. In rural, 15-20 minutes. So it's good to have at least one or two guns, one for the house, and concealed carry.
The police are performing the only duty they've ever been tasked with - to protect the capital of the wealthy while enforcing laws which target primarily minority groups.
At least Malcolm X preaching is becoming a reality.

Skills training and preparation are necessary if you plan on protecting youre family or yourself. The reason why so many get killed when carrying is because they lack both of these things. To many use having a gun as an intimidation tool instead of a life preserving tool. I am black and I can't tell you how many times I've gone to the range and observed many African Americans who just fire wild shots and try shooting fast with accuracy gone out the window. If you're going to own a firearm train with it as if you're life depends upon it because someday it might.

I think the last brothers thought no matter how noble are truly dangerous. To talk about how we need this transformation is great, but for the most part the nation were in we live largely are a whole nother level. When people's material conditions are stressed, anger and desperation to survive *can* lead to criminal activity. Nothing is evolving. My black friends have always owned firearms and hunted. They have always kept home defense firearms and some are collectors like me. Nothing new or different.
