As a general rule, Never refill oil back to the amount removed. Fill it to the spec then verify on the dipstick. You have no way of knowing if it was overfilled before unless you changed it.

I do not recommend Fram oil filters, problems with them in the past. Also, I recommend adding 4 quarts - running the engine for 1 minute, then adding more oil as needed to reach the proper level on the oil dip stick. I've seen my friends overfill their oil by doing the replace what you removed method (not an accurate method). Also, oil pan bolt torque is important. I've experienced over torquing (stripping out threads) on oil pans - not a fun fix. Otherwise, GREAT video! Thanks!

Fantastic tips! I have switched to the Mobile 1 filters, which seem to be pretty nice. Also started filling to dipstick indicator. But I like your 4-quart idea!

Thank you for making this oil change look easy! I have a 2024 Sienna Limited and have wanted to change the oil prior to the 10K miles but have heard conflicting information on whether to do it or not. Some say the manufacturer uses break in oil for the first oil change so leave it alone, and others say just do what the manufacture requires which is 10k, and then again , others say, you should change the first oil after 1000 miles. I have 6.9K after 5 months of use of mostly highway miles from 2 long trips of 2.8K each. Well, I’m over the 1 K, but still less than the 10k. I suppose it would help to just replace the oil now. Thanks for demonstrating how to reset the maintenance reminder. That’s a bit annoying.

Dude, tks for the quik steps on the oil change BUT you are missing the accuracy and the fine points, including Lexus/Toyota instructions (I did not say 'dealers' because some personnel can be wrong ). Your way of determining proper oil fill level is not error proof, proper or reliable instructions.
Per info I know: On cold engine with new oil on this 2.5L, just fill to halfway mark on the dip stick is a good starting point before u start to check and top off.
    Reminders:
Prior to oil change, drive vehicle till oil is warm to circulate sediment so that you can drain them out.
Proper way for oil level check on the 2.5L is:
(If oil change is involved, underfilled to 1/2 qt below oil capacity specs. Add the step of starting up the car for a few minutes after an oil change to ensure oil filter has been filled. Let car sit for 30 min. Then check the oil level for level at 1/2 way market. Top off to that 1/2: way level as needed.
Double check the next day after driving to hot/warm engine temperature. Shut off and let the car sit for 15 min. to let extra oil drain down, check the level of the warm/hot oil. If it hits the top mark, you are perfectly full. Above that is overfilling)
    1. Park on level ground. The engine should be warm/hot up(the warm oil expands by about 1/2 quart)
    2. Pop the hood and locate the dipstick.
    3. Pull the dipstick out of the engine and clean it off with a cloth.
    4. Place the dipstick back into its tube, then pull it out.
    5. Look at both sides to see where the oil level falls.
    6. If the oil streak reaches either the cross-hatched area(or the indicator lines), you’re done. (The blank area between the 2 marks is 1 quart)
    7. If the oil streak falls below the recommended level, add more oil with a funnel. Do not overfill.
    8. This 2.5L engine is very sensitive to overfilling which can cause various issues/damages.
If it is below 1/2 way mark and very close to the low mark, you have to be very careful. Either top off or if you are close to oil change interval, check weekly.
DIYers, it sounds complicated but it is not once you understand that hot oil expands and that is when they want you to check that the oil level is somewhere in the blank area. When it is close to the low mark, you be very careful and do not let it drop below, if you are stretching it to an upcoming oil change. On this 2.5, it is sensitive to overfilling.

Hybrids can collect a lot of moisture in the oil, it’s a good idea to put only 4.5 quarts back in, not whatever you take out, since what you took out includes significant amounts of water and fuel.

Good video. I'd say the same comment as someone previously about the dealership possibly overfilling the oil. I have the same engine (A25A-FXS) in my 2022 Toyota Camry hybrid and I double-checked the oil dipstick the other day and it was over the second dot/max fill line after the engine was cooled off for 15-30 min of driving. Double-checked the dipstick after letting it sit overnight and still over the full line. Kinda pissed me off so I just drained it and put exactly 4.5 qts in it. Now the oil level is on the upper end of the two dots but not over the max fill line after letting the engine cool off.

      @DadDoingStuff  Рік тому

The first one thousand miles is the break in period so every moving part inside the engine has an opportunity to properly run in then change the oil and filter to get rid of all the metal shavings from the break in period.
It applies to all new engines.

I also pre-fill the new oil filter with oil and let it sit while I drain oil and remove the filter. I then dump any oil the filter hasn’t absorbed back into the container then install the filter. Again probably tons of debate over this process just make your own decision.

Fair enough. I switched to Mobile 1 filters some time ago and I believe they have the same check valve in them.

I used to use only fram. All of my cars last at least 200,000 miles. But yea there are better filters. Before the UA-cam days we all just used what was available at the autoparts store.

@@DadDoingStuff the oem Toyota oil filter which is about the same price as long as you don't buy it from the dealership.

We came from owning a volvo xc 60 new to buying a toyota sienna for hauling around the kids. Toyota's maintenance and warranty is terrible! Volvo has an excellent service program. It covered our brakes, oil, even the windshield wipers! You get 2 oil changes from toyota. Something to consider when purchasing a vehicle. This will be our last toyota

Fair feedback, but overall I think you will (hopefully) like the Sienna. This is our second and we mostly love it. They just run. Appreciate you watching and the comment!

I can understand coming from a European car that it might be a little underwhelming. We’ve had our fourth GEN for over three years now. We’re now at 81,000 miles and it’s just runs perfectly. You will never get the mileage and the reliability out of that Volvo that you will out of the Sienna. I do the maintenance myself and expect to get 300,000 miles out of it. Also the gas mileage; there are times that we’ve gotten 37 mpg per tank, and that is with AWD👍🏻.

I will add that after servicing our sienna, it was the easiest service I've ever done. Also, the filters were inexpensive, and it doesn't take much oil.

Volvo might have a better warranty and maintenance package but that doesn’t necessarily translate to cost of ownership which is one of Toyota’s strong points. So what happens after the warranty is up? Reliability wise there is no question Toyotas are more reliable. Check consumer reports predicted reliability chart. Of the 30 car brands they chart . Lexus & Toyota #1 & 2 .
      Volvo # 25
Cost of ownership chart was nearly identical in ranking with # 1 being Toyota at an average maintenance and repair cost of $2975 and Volvo being near the bottom of the list at over 5k
So I guess if you’re only going to keep your vehicle during the effective warranty and maintenance package period I suppose you will come out ahead. If you’re going to keep it for a very long time as I do. it It is likely Toyota will come out on top by a considerable margin. Not to mention the headaches involved with car repairs.

Oh a couple other things. Regarding brake replacement. Unless you drive very aggressively. It is highly unlikely you will need to replace the brakes anywhere near the warranty period. You could easily get 80k miles plus from the brakes. A couple important tips also. Service the hybrid battery air filters regularly. Cheap easy diy and very important for long life on that expensive battery and ignore the 10 K miles recommendation for oil changes . Change every 5k miles especially if you plan on keeping the van for a long time

Frame actually a very good and trustworthy aftermarket oil and air filter brand. I used to buy Frame for my previous vehicles but when I own Toyota vehicles, Toyota OEM parts cost almost the same as after market thus, I have always use Toyota parts for maintenance and repair of my Toyota vehicles. My 2005 Toyota Sienna still runs on its original engine, transmission, AC, fuel pump, suspension (suspension finally needed work after 325K miles that’s over 1/2 million kilometers).

Thank you for your video. When I open the cap on top of the engine I see that there is a metal piece kind of struck at the opening so I could not insert the funnel inside to pour new oil? Can you look at uploaded pic and let me know ? i.imgur.com/clcPBRH.jpg

    • @DadDoingStuff
      @DadDoingStuff  11 місяців тому

That’s normal. Basically you would want a shorter funnel. You could even just cut the bottom off of your existing funnel. Not sure why they do that, but mine is the same.
