Fishing with a Sliding Float

  • This is one film you need to watch right through. Graeme gets a call from Andy, the owner of Watmore Fishery. He had set up an interview with Chris, a top Silvers matchman, but who has been specialising in ultra deep sliding float rigs and winning matches against pole anglers as well. It's top-end information that is another 1st for the Totally Awesome cameras, as Graeme does not fish, but drains Chris of information until he can barely stan! (Mind you Graeme does get a sneaky half hour in after the filming, using a "Frankenrod" that he bodged together from the broken top section of a Carp rod, and the busted butt section of another rod. A new set of small diameter rings and a butt cap made from a cupboard drawer handle? Can he be serious? Sit back and enjoy a film almost an hour long....The Totally Awesome Fishing Show...Keeping fishing REAL.

    Been using the slider float in deep water for years and years. Surprised you didn't explain the only thing that needed explaining - the sliding stop knot! Same knot as you would use to tie on a spade end hook (for the beginners - it's called a whipping knot - just leave the tag ends long).
    That Frankenrod is awesome - nice Carp too - I guessed 10lb by the way it was stripping line - so I missed it by a couple of lbs....
    I'm in Ireland since 1990 - haven't paid for a days fishing since then - so it's kind of hard for me to spend less than 0.00 on the bait :)

    Any chance you could load up a further explanation of the stop knot, was especially trying to understand the reference to long tails and whether they would snag on typical Avon rod (now my estuary float rod here in Oz). Thanks

    I first learnt this method after my hero Ian Heaps became World Champion in 1975 by using this slider method. He is still a brilliant angler. Lovely to see it being used to great effect by Foxy who got me back into Angling again ten years ago. First class angler and first class video. Cant wait to get out there and try it again.

    This is a fantastic method for carp and big bream in still waters. I used it lot's when I lived in the Netherlands in the 90's. The trick is to plumb the depth and to find that drop off! Great advice on the stop knot! Quality vid as always Graeme. Thank You!

    you can do this with a ledger weight also ... float ledgering. Heavier weight on the bottom which keeps the float in place against the stop knot. Float goes under etc we used to do this when we didnt have our feeder rods and tips back in the day. One rod for everything.

    Although this type of fishing (especially for "snotties) has no interest for me, that does not stop it being a good video for beginners and the more experienced anglers. Loved the fact they have commercial whisks to assist in making your ground bait. I still prefer the idea of feeding little and often once you initially baited up your swim. If you look at what anglers have done to the reservoirs near me, by chucking in buckets full of ground bait and boilies they have polluted a great fishing venue. The best method of fishing was yours at the end of the video, loved the handle on the rod. Thanks for posting.

  • @Trust1878
    @Trust1878 3 роки тому +1

    Some great advice here. What Chris said about always spending as much on your bait as you pay for your ticket to fish is a really good tip. I've been fishing on and off for 30 years and never heard that before. Great video once again. Any chance of seeing you give the pole a go, Graeme? I reckon a lot of beginners don't know about pole fishing, especially nowadays with carp fishing/bivvy/alarms being ever present. The thrill of seeing pole elastic stretch out from the margins on a double figure carp would be great to see on here. If you dont have experience of it, you could do it yourself with an experienced matchman.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  3 роки тому +2

      I can't get on with the pole I keep wanting to strike....and all that shuffling in and out with pole sections seems so time consuming...but I know it is highly efficient in the right hands...but just not mine..I'll stick to casting.

      Take a 10'' piece of line form a large loop lay it alongside your mainline then take one end and wrap around mainline and through the loop 6 times then wet and pull tags , leave tag ends 2 to 3 inches long don't pull too tight until you have plumbed the depth then pull tags really tight to lock stop knot in place

    I find UK fishing fascinating and complicated with all the apparatus. Why do they put the caught fish in those long net baskets in the water ?

    • @1987KAS
      @1987KAS 3 роки тому +2

      It's called a keep net. They are used to keep your fish in when your in a match then when the match is finished you pull it out and place the fish in a weigh sling. (the little net) see how much your catch weighs then release the fish. most weight wins the match. 👍 Hope that helps you

    • @troywee4774
      @troywee4774 3 роки тому +1

      the long net baskets are 'keepnets' which allow the fish to be kept safe for either weighing at the end of a match or for just seeing what you caught at the end of the session. later all released.

      Here in Oz we use something similar to keep your catch alive and fresh until you pack up and clean them (if fishing for dinner). It saves having to lug an esky (cooler or ice chest) with you to preserve your catch. It's like a stringer but much less intrusive for the fish, especially if you are releasing them at the end of your session. Where I'm from sharks etc can be an issue though.

    If he was match fishing would that carp count towards his total weight or is it target species only, such as roach, bream etcetera? If it was all fish then his one carp would blast his weight total through the roof I'm guessing. Also - do those bream taste any good? That Frankenrod reminds me of boat rods we used as kids. Usually they were the result of incidents like you described. I've since seen purpose built setups, particularly in the USA, such as the Dock Demon. All very interesting. Tight lines mate.

    • @TAFishing
      @TAFishing  3 роки тому +1

      They can have "all-in" matches with various species but I think they have to keep Carp in a separate net. They sometimes have a limit of about 60lbs of fish in one keepnet..If the net weighs over 60,you can lose the whole weight(I think that's how it works)...I can see the "Frankenrod" will be in another film.

    • @TheMeta6
      @TheMeta6 3 роки тому +2

      Depends on the match, most count all fish but there are silver fish only matches. Carp are bigger but you can catch a lot of smaller fish in a short period of time which could weigh more.

    • @TheCaptainbeefylog
      @TheCaptainbeefylog 3 роки тому

      Thanks for the clarification gents.

    • @peterbr3736
      @peterbr3736 3 роки тому

      Chris is targeting the silverfish (roach bream perch etc) and is trying to avoid the carp in this video.
      He fishes the "silverfish only" matches at Watmore Farm and carp don't count in them.
      There are also matches there where carp do count but there are much better methods for catching carp there e.g. method feeder, pellet waggler, pole fishing or margin fishing in the shallower water.
      There's no point in targeting the silverfish if carp count for the reason you stated.
      For a carp match you could need 3 or 4 nets+ to ensure you don't go over the limit per net. It is common to catch well over 100lb of carp in a match.
      We don't eat the freshwater coarse fish in fisheries in the UK and it is actually theft to take fish from a commercially run place like Watmore farm. They don't taste good anyway!

      Marinas are closed to public where I launch I guess due to Covid,so don't fancy any other more dangerous launches on my own. Even down Cornwall I tried to get out, was leaving and thought I had better phone. Good job I did, they had shut as well ...Would have been a 6 hour tow for nothing, turn round and come back.Now I can't be bothered,will wait till next year.

      Why don't you have it on a mooring just for the summer? Could save you a lot of time.
