- Join Graeme as he catches fish using a bird feather and dead flies! Graeme has pulled out all the stops to give the Awesome Army followers a good watch with a movie length film over an hour long. He is completely off the wall with this one, showing you the ultimate old school way he makes a couple of floats out of what he believes was a Red Kite feather. But he also takes a shot at making a quill writing pen from one of the feathers. (Ok, so the writing does look like its done by a 3 year old, but that's Graeme, a 12 year old's brain trapped inside a 69 year old's body) It gets worse...He goes off to Watmore fishery to test his floats, and then discovers a totally random new bait...Greenbottle flies that attack his bag of sweetcorn! However they pay the ultimate price as Britain's all-round angler has no problem in PUTTING FLIES ON HIS HOOK? What is this man on? but don't laugh...he actually catches fish on them. This is a classic TA Old school film, which Graeme was hoping to hold for next year, but seeing so many people in various stages of lockdown he brought it forward to give everyone some distraction. Great video as always Graham i remember 40 year's ago watching my grandad making his own floats when I was 10 year's old seating at the kitchen table and my nan telling him of becouse he made a mess with modelling paint, just watching you making them brought back some great memories for me as a kid and going fishing with my grandad god rest his soul now I'm 50 year's old I'm teaching my own granson how to make them, truly appreciate your video's stay safe to yourself and your family
I made my first float with my grandad when i was 8/9 years old out of a seagull feather. Used one of my grandmas hair pins whipped on with cotton thread and black and pink nail varnish on the tip and i have used it for 10 years and still catch fish on it to the day. Great bit of fun and a lasting memory.

I've made floats from feathers and wine corks for decades now. Sometimes if I'm fishing shallow water for carp, tilapia dn mullet they'll be spooked by a normal float so I half hitch on a leaf or twig and they ignore it. I also use a long shank hool,an old cast net weight and some random feathers, Christmas tinsel, tin foil, coloured wool or whatever is around to make bullet head jigs. You don't have to spend tons of money to catch fish. Using a centre-pin reel on a sea fishing rod is bad? Lol . Half of my reels are Alvey side-cast centre-pins and 90% of my fishing is saltwater. Great video Graeme! Nice to see the old school methods being used again. So many people are drawn like magpies to the shiny and sparkly lures and baits that they sometimes forget that all they are trying to do is disguise a hook as a bit of fish dinner! What better dinner for a fish than a fly that is prevalent in the immediate area!!
I did make a large pencil float for deadbaiting years ago , using offcuts of Kingspan insulation board and the red plastic nozzle tube from a WD40 can and some old epoxy glue I found in the shed! Spent two days battling doubt as I made it , then two days later I was battling a decent 12lb pike caught whilst using it.

Its all about experimenting to see how things "old school" might work.
I used dead flies a lot as a youngster.
Primarily because I wasn't allowed to have maggots in the fridge. Maggots were not cheap on paper round pay so any left over maggots got taken home.
Chrysalist's would be used too but often flies would have emerged from them after a few days. To stop them flying away as you took the top off the bait box you had to shake the box violently. As youngsters we used to think we had made them too dizzy to fly.
More likely they were both weak from hunger and suffered injuries to their wings from all the bait box shaking. Anyway, I remember catching pretty much everything on them to be honest.
There was one time I had forgotten to empty a bait box and upon opening it in the kitchen had to suffer the wrath of mother after at least 20 large blow-fly were set loose! 😁
With the peacock wagglers that i've made I use float adaptors instead of whipping on a ring - it saves a step and its handy.
Blimey this takes me back to 1980...9 years old and a quill float catching my first ever fish on the river Cam...a dace of about 3 ounces...happy days!🎣
A pier rod with an Aerial and dead flies on a homemade float. It's like a dream after a cheese supper, and why we keep watching.
We used to use yellow hover flies for bait and catch wild carp on a local village pond. Excellent bait.

I think you're right that they are Red Kite feathers. The large dark coloured feather is undoubtedly a wing tip primary but I'm not sure about the others. They could be secondary wing feathers or possibly tail feathers for red kites have long forked tails.

Thank you for a very enjoyable video, it brought back memories of fishing with my dad in the 1950’s using cane rods, quill floats and a centrepin reel.
there is nothing quite like playing a carp on a centrepin, you feel every tug, nudge and pull. First time I caught one on a centrepin it took me 2 hours to get her in, on 8lb main and 2lb hooklink, under 2BB weighted float and dog biscuit. Two aching arms and a 22lb common.

Loved that video Graeme, I used to make floats out of paper wrapped cocktail sticks about 60years ago
Sometimes i think we should all take a step back from the modern world to make our kit which works just as well as the modern equipment used today, besides which it puts a smile on your face remembering summer days as kid fishing the local rivers, the kit may have looked bloody awful but it worked. Just goes show all these tackle tarts that spend thousands on kit that you really don't need it, all you need is river bank experience and you'll catch fish.
Strange as it may seem I really enjoyed catching on the smaller float,it was just right for the Roach and Rudd ,plus cutting back the corn size made a huge difference to converting bites into fish. Obviously all of no interest to the modern angler but for the senior generation it looks like it brought back some fond memories of traditional float fishing. Alas,the times they are a-changing...and not for the better.
I'm more impressed by the rod performance I have also been known to make most of my tackle but here's a video that makes me really want to get those light rods back out for some fun.
Can't confirm the origin of the feathers but I'm fairly sure those little fluffy parts are to trap air for warmth. Thanks for the video, gets me through confinement :)

Just brilliant Graeme, you took me right back to when I started course fishing in the mid to late 60's. I only ever used quill floats, my rod cost 10/6 pence bought in Jack Brays in Looe and I was inspired to fish by Jack Hargreaves having watched a film where he picked up discarded tackle, made a rod out of hazel branch a float out of a stick and landed a 2lb perch. In those days fishing was fun whatever size fish you caught. Great filming, good fun fishing and a great carp at the end. Thanks for posting.
Same time as me, my first article was published in the old ANGLING magazine in 1968 I think, a forerunner of its time with really good writers,couldn't wait to get my hands on it each month .Had all the top names in fishing and they weren't all trying to flog us something,it was about knowledge and techniques. It was more about trying to put something back into the sport,rather than taking it out.
I learnt to fish in the sixties also. Remember catching tiddlers and the odd minnow in a wine bottle trap? Catching bullheads by hand. Freshwater mussels and native crayfish. I even remember tickling a couple of trout! Fifty years later and I'm starting again. Parents gave away all my kit. Gutted to lose my rod and favourite Bakelite centrepin reel. Tried others but always came back to the old little bugger, no fancy stuff, you just turned it with a knob on the one side. I automatically started making my own floats etc and trolled the internet for vintage kit as well as buying some modern stuff like wot everyone else uses. Ex display, second hand or budget kit. First three casts earlier this year and landed a rock with the first, caught my dog with the second and myself with the third. My line became one one almighty bird's nest (ex display so line memory had sealed it's fate) I came home and have blamed lockdown and now a broken ankle for not returning.
@@BrucePenny Lets prey for a better 2021. I like you had my misfortunes and one lives with me to this day. My first and last fishing match on the Thames. Lots of people watching when my first cast went into a tree. I hooked something really big and played it for a good half hour when the rod snapped and what ever it was broke the line (disappointed about 20 people who stood behind me). Unfortunately where I live now a lot of the resident wildlife has disappeared due to mink and the Canadian Cray Fish invasion.
@@davidb.7093 I wish I hadn't released my rock. I know that's the protocol but I don't think anyone would have minded if I'd brought it home and mounted it proudly as my first catch since being a bairn.
The exact paints I used many years ago from the local tackle shop. They sold little baggies of spring type eyes as well. Most of the time I just stuck a quick change float rubber over the end. They used to give them away free on the old angling times pretty much every time.
Slaying those flies....pinch off the wings..if you were just 2- 3 further back you would not have spooked that bigger fish ....nice looking second last carp....carp are like folk!..all shapes and sizes...

lol, that took me back a fair few years mate, i use to use the eye from a safety pin mate already formed just snip it off! in fact i still have a few quills in my box for when i get the urge to lay on with some corn - gotta love a bit of old school! cheers for the share!
Same here used to use very small safety pins eyes for the floats.
by all accounts the bit inside the shaft are hemispheric pulp caps left over from when the feather was formed

I have used porcupine quills for decades, just slip on a piece of bicycle valve rubber on each end and float it flat, the fish will pull it upright, and under if not struck immediately. I still have a dozen of different sizes, and still use them on occasion.

Birds moult. They have Summer and winter plumage, usually moulting before the breeding season and after.
I think the inner part of the feather quilt that has rings along the length of it, is there to reinforce and support the quill as it grows.

I often don't buy maggots. Bread sweetcorn and worms are all you need most of the time..
I use duck and goose feathers cut them up for hair rig stops, natural element and cost nothing. I thought I was odd using my LRF rod with a 1000 size reel, 6lb mono, tackle is a 5g olivette adjustable with float stops and a size 12 hook fishing bread punch, catches me a nice mixed bag of roach, rudd, tench and carp.
Its all about having fun and putting different stuff together to see how it works.

I enjoyed doing it. I know its something the modern angler probably won't bother trying, more a trip down memory lane of how it used to be...but still caught fish . I tried to make it as "non-tackle,must-have" as I could by using an LRF sea rod,a centrepin reel and a home made float. Doesn't get more random than that.
Graeme , I think That fish has been broken from electro fishing. If they get caught between the electric pulses they can snap there backs . You used to see them a lot more when electro fishing was more popular .

That's true...When I was Blue Marlin fishing and found bananas on the boat they went discreetly over the side.

make the floats the other way round for stillwater..more like a billy makin canal grey..more sensitive ..and the curve holds them back in a tow..old school ..try them on a canal not a commercial..can use a beer barrel on them and still catch..lol.
I still have a few Billy Makin grey canal floats left....sooo sensitive,great for margin fishing. Crucians,Roach,Rudd and any shy biters.

I suspect the brown barred feather might be from an owl. If so, perhaps the soft back edge to the feather is what make the owl so silent in flight.

Afternoon mate, bit random but could you please give me tips on baits or something for these winter months for carp getting constant blanks and has been really difficult. Cheers pal
Usually winter is red maggots,clusters of them on the hook,and a solid bag of 2mm coarse pellets and red maggots inside. They usually pound the bait in quite a bit,so depends how much you want to spend on maggots. Just a suggestion.

Loved the quill floats. I got given recently some long peacock feathers from a friend for my little boy. They are about 1 metre long each and I am wondering if I could make lots from 1 peacock quill. If so what would you recommend my lad and I seal the ends of the quill with?
What about melting some candle wax,dipping the ends in then let it cool ? Would that work and seal them ? Anyone out there know ?

I have a fishing challenge for you, either fresh or salt water try catch the biggest or most fish while handling with your son. It would be hard but it would take some skill.
I drive my son made when I use my madfish centrepin as it is loud, I have tweaked the ratchet so it’s not as loud. A young lad asked me when he saw me using it, what reel is that. He then went back to his mate and you could hear him say, “that old man is using something called a centrepin”. I’m now classified as old, 56........
If you want feathers, some of my family members have birds and they’re always giving them away. There’s an African grey, a blue/gold macaw, etc.
I'll have to give the quill pen a C-. But the float gets a solid B. Smith out.

Why would you paint a natural quill? Fish are used to seeing them all day long.
You don't need the eye, just use a couple a silicone bands.
Paint at the top, permanent markers give u the colour you need on the day when you get to your spot. Or tippex.
You do make hard work of things.
Who sharpens a Stanley blade?! Can I come and teach you sharpening and you teach me boat use?
How do I identify clearly between a roach and a Rudd when fishing?
Rudd have a slightly up turned mouth and feed off the top a lot ,where as roach have a pretty straight mouth,if that makes sense lol ... .also ,, rudd have a lot more red on their fins ! Hope this helps pal ..cheers
Those brighter feathers are tail feathers from a kite the darker arre ther primary flight feathers from the kite

Its difficult for me as an angling journalist of some fifty plus years as we were always taught to provide information (when writing) but today its largely about instant UA-cam "entertainment" which in many cases don't teach you anything about watercraft or thinking like a fish .I just don't seem to have any interest in the Algorythm requirements of the day. I don't see the point of just filming some fish without delving into how it found its way onto the end of the line...I guess I'm some kind of angling dinosaur !!!"
What size hooks do you tend to use
12 to 4 generally, depends on species and what bait I am using.
