Savion Glover is a genius. He is regarded as the greatest tap dancer alive by all the greats that you know, Dr Whiggs, for their grace. He chooses to experiment with the form, not just to do what he already knows he can do, and what people already expect tap to be. This particular style may not be your cup of tea, but Glover can do it all -- and does. He's an artist who pushes what is expected from and in the art of tap, like it or not. Before you ass judgment, see what else he does with it.
The scene in Bojangles when he dances in front of and with Gregory Hines is simply amazing. There might be doubt as who’s the greatest basketball, baseball, football, hockey player is but there’s no doubt who the greatest tapdancer is.
On my very first visit to the USA during the 1980's, while in New York, my daddy took my sisters and I to a play called "The Tapdance Kid". That was little Savion, wasn't it? I used to see him on Lafayette during the 90's. I love him.
Unreal how people hate on savion, no one said he was the greatest tap dancer of all time but the best currently. The reason why people like fred astair, gene kelly, and the like are considered the best ever is b/c they were the originators and you cant replace people like them. But over time modern day greats like savion, are born and can be considered as one of the best all time imo...I think he's excellent!
@@christopherwright6066 Astaire was, but tapping was a minor part of his dancing. It was his style that was original: his use of his arms, body and props.
you gotta truly love Savion!!! he has mastered and truly elevated the art form. Gregory and Sammy would be so proud. Their legacy along with the others before them truly lives within you.
i don't think the audience even understood what they were watching. he is simply the greatest tapper ever. i hope my daughter gets to tap with him some day. she loves to tap.
He lives near me. I just met the guy today for the second time at my work. I get so shy around him but he's really modest and nice. He was shopping for legos with his son or nephew :P.
no one will ever be as good as the nicholas brothers, gene kelly, donold o'connor, bojangles, and fred astaire this guy shouldn't even be considered as one of the best
Not true. You know nothing about tap dancing. I don't appreciate his style, but none of the great dancers you mention could have performed his footwork. Nor would they have wanted to, but that's another story.
@@SuperSnaketooth Just curious. How long did you study tap and where. I studied at one of the most famous schools in New York with the man who choreographed Gene Kelly's audition routine for Pal Joey. I was never great dancer, but I was around it for many years.
Yasssss. I wish that shot had run four times longer. It was so clean and tight. Savion is the shiz, but NO ONE made precision look effortless like Hines.
@Jayjen35 Yes I know, all tappers are musicians of sorts. I am just into finding a balance between dancer and musician. I guess you could say that is my style. I understand that this is Mr. Glover's style and I appreciate the beauty of it. Don't get me wrong, he is most definitely magnificent :)
You know you're a legendary tap dancer, when you can do more with your feet than average drummers can do with their hands. (Yes, I'm an amateur drummer, and I know "drummers" who can't play 32nd note triplets without rolls).
@DrWhiggs No, but you can take it that he has taken a style that has been around for several generations and brought it to a lot of people who would have never known about it, has taught many many students this incredible form of dance, passing on what he's learned from Greogry Hines and Sammie Davis Jr. etc etc etc. Sorry, but this dance form is more than Fred Astair, and the latest line on Broadway, as great as he was and they are.
I think maybe the fact that "Sav" is loose, unkempt a bit, and less 'tight' than Sammy or Gregory, means to the uneducated....that his tap is less "official' (??) Uh-UH..that man gots feet!!!
@FlyingSquarePancakes Yeah... You're crazy. Or just missing the point. Of course he is partly a musician! Many great tap dancers are also great percussionists. Fred Astaire for one. The entire show "Stomp" was about that connection. A form of dance that you don't understand and a dancer that has not only mastered it, but is moving it forward, doesn't equal his being overrated so much as it points to the idea that maybe you should open your mind a bit more to different art forms.
A little late, but Fred Astaire was never a great "tap" dancer, he was a great stylist and "star"; he couldn't have done half of these steps from a sheer footwork point of view. Savion doesn't so much "dance" as just "tap."

Such an amazing artform that needs to be revived
100% back in the day even tough guys like james cagney could tap with the best of them ....needs to be revived 100%
I saw him yesterday at Cal State North Ridge and He and his crew where phenominally good!
He simply just doesn't age.He just looks exactly the same here as when you watch him from other decades.
I can't help but think happy feet when I watch this..
OMG!!!! He's so talented...tap is not the easiest thing to do!! I wish he could do a master's class at my studio!
How could anyone possibly dislike this?

Yes, it was. Wish I had seen it.
I now have a new found love for tap thanks to this guy. He is amazing!!

He's just great. The first time I saw him dance was in the movie TAP with all the other legends.
Do you hear a tribute both to the movie tap and the tribute to Sammy Davis Jr.?
he is my dance idol
Anyone catch the step Gregory Hines did in Tap, when he and the 3 other guys were dancing together on the street?
Legend of the Zygote yes yes yes!!!!it gave me chills?

Well, we ready for you to show case your stuff....and go on tour if you have not already.
@tylersurfer18 He is the dancer that danced Mumbles parts... they recorded him. :)
I remember him from Sesame Street....aaahhh, good times.
This guy really lives up to his title
A fan since you were on Sesame Street

not bad. have you seen Action man dance in the appleflea music video, now thats show biz
@crwnikeboy lucky! Lol I hear you ll meet a lot of interesting people in that line if work
i watched this in dance class before and the teacher said that he does like 10 taps a second!!!
How on earth did this get 12 dislikes? Someone please explain

@Daryeezy I drive a limousine in Las Vegas and I drove your cousin. He was a great guy and we talked about his dancing.

What IS this piece of music?
Here in 2023
Mumble's feet!!!
@canucks2015 WHAT??? How?
Do you tap also cousin?
HAPPY FEET!

Savion has been a marvelous dancer and actor since he was a child on Sesame Street. He's always been amazing. He and Gregory Hines were good friends.
Who remember the days when he was on sesame street???!!!
@Provenz I guess it's just me, then.
Savion is one of the best but NOT THE BEST !😎
Tom Virgeron is the shit, man. But, so is Savion.
Happy Feet should obviously have been about him; he's the one with the happy feet
the animationists from Happy Feet USED Savion Glover for the penguin... if you watch the movie, you can see Savion's unmistakable style....
Awesome tap dancer.
But nothing beats Michael Flatley.
We learned that in Social Studies
i like how he busted out some gregory at 2:08.

That's because he dances so fast wrinkles don't have a chance to form.... or gray hair to catch him. Keep on dancing, Savion!
Music was too loud...we want to hear the taps!
this guy is amazing. but let's be honest, tom bergeron is an american hero. thank you, tom.
wasn't he on sesame street before he made it big as a tap dancer?

I love how the girls in the back do nothing

The music was way too loud to enjoy the tap dancing!
I know....actually...in a way it was the best part
.
He only has that title because everyone else is dead
he's no fred astaire

I'd like to see you do better....
The girls in the back need to not be there.... It's distracting from the genius in the front.
i have a report on him
So I take it we have Savion to thank for removing all grace from tap dancing and turning it into a fastest flailing contest?
