Well said Tim. By the time you see odd tyre wear it’s usually to late to get it back, and let’s s face it, mud tyres don’t wear the best. Prior preparation prevents particularly poor performance. I run two spares, they get included in the rotation and it’s amazing how many more kms you get from a set of tyres. One tyre that is directional is the Mickey Thompson Baja Claws. Hi Tim, just a quick note of thanks. I’ve just got back from the VIC high plains and used your solo awning setup/pack up technique and it worked a treat. On a different note, last winter we were heading up to McNamara’s Hut when we came across a deer hunter camping on the side on the track. We passed the same spot a week ago and this sh*thead had thrown all his cans, stubbies and plastic bags into the surrounding bush, we cleaned the area up. 😡

Hi Tim. Another good topic you covered. I run cooper A/T’s and rotate every 10k too. Easiest way to remember is every 10k service on my Toyota. I don’t worry about the spare as it’s a different tread pattern. Cheers mate

G'day Tim good to see you again I enjoy your vids. I run six tyres all Goodyear Duratrac and rotate every 5000ks when I service the Patrol changing all filters and engine oil, rear tyres to the front spares to the rear and front to spares seems to work for me.

Gday Steve. I do use a torque wrench to righting my wheel nuts on. I probably wouldn’t say the setting I use incase someone else uses the same settings and a wheel falls off. Lol. But certainly a great extra video idea. Thanks heaps for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
@@timbates4wdadventures it would be fine to say consult owner's manual to ascertain your individual torque settings for wheel nuts and to use torque settings provided. You could say there is a pattern to tighten your wheel nuts X 5 or X 6 as the case may be. Torque settings are reduced by 30% if anti seize used on studs. I researched the hell out of that answer. Over zealous tyre rotation can also mask underlying issues, like alignment and suspension wear. I reckon 20-25k is a good balance, providing you fix issues when you see a hint of uneven tread wear.

The Khumo Road Venture M/T is a directional tyre. They work really well but I won’t buy them again, simply because of this rotation issue. Balance beads are also awesome for 4wd tyres, saves you having to rebalance them all the time when you move them around or lose chunks of rubber etc.

If you have any wheel wobbles in the front or vibration while driving you might want to book in to a tyre store and have the front wheels balanced. If your front tyres are wearing unevenly, or if you find the your car pulls to one side while driving, then you might need to get a front end wheel alignment. Tim, another great video. A bit off topic but desperate for some advice and your videos are what I've used to plan my last two high country trips. I have a mate visiting in early September through late. I'm located in Geelong. Can you recommend some spots that are open and good for scenic treks and swagging it at the time of year. Coming from Geelong it would be an easier day one drive to run billy from west to east. I noticed in your video and one other I follow on UA-cam, you guys run it from east to west. Would you consider it preferential to run in that direction or was it simply a matter of convenience based on where you were entering? Is it less risky one direction vs. the other? Btw in case it helps you recommend...2007 Prado 120 D4D, lifted, sliders, all the recovery gear, bar, winch, etc...experienced drivers coming along. Great advice . . Another suggestion - Check your tyre pressures - Don't do a Leanne and be lazy, as we know, running low pressure on bitumen isn't a good idea. 🙄 🥴

I need to get up and do mine shortly so thanks for sharing. Honestly though it is something I have never worried about on any other vehicle Ive owned but have found the Passenger Side Rear is wearing quite a lot on the outside, Tyre shops & mechanics blame it on all the Round Abouts in my area. Being that is wearing so much on the outside would you still recommend putting it on the front passenger side? My spare is a Highway tyre atm so try to avoid using that and my Drivers Side Rear is much newer than the others due to a puncture in the side wall not to long ago. Should I just swap the sides for now?
G'day mate, If your spare is a totally different tyre, i probably wouldn't use it on the car with your other tyres. Different tread patterns will react differently from the others, specially in the wet. Just rotate the same tread tyres you have on your 4WD. Thanks heaps for your feedback mate. Cheers Tim.
When those tyre went on, all 5 wheels were balanced, so they should be in balance after the rotation is complete. Thats why go for a drive to see if they are still in balance as mine were. Thanks for your feedback. Cheers Tim.
I do my rotations properly. Only need to pay for a balance if they are out after the rotation. Nothing wrong with doing your own rotations. Cheers Tim.
You can only tell if they’re out of balance if you put them on a balancer! If you’re leaving it till it rattles your steering wheel it’s been out of balance for too long. And they have to take them off to balance them anyway, tell them how you want them rotated!

You should put balance beads in em. That will sort out any balance issues.

Granted it's extra work, but I recommend 5 tyre rotation every 5,000 ks as the ideal for most even tyre wear & longest life.

Hi Tim I rotate my tyres on the GU patrol mate every 10,000 k’s all five of them I swap them over exactly the same way you do mate so I’ll get even wear hope you’re going well 👍🏻

I would like to know - How do I know if my wheels need balancing or alignment or both?
I have recently started driving a dedicated 4x4 vehicle in India, so am a beginner and would like your guidance.

Thanks mate, thats great you found the video helpful.
If you have any wheel wobbles in the front or vibration while driving you might want to book in to a tyre store and have the front wheels balanced.
If your front tyres are wearing unevenly, or if you find the your car pulls to one side while driving, then you might need to get a front end wheel alignment.
If you haven't had those done for a while, might be worth getting them done.

Tim, another great video. A bit off topic but desperate for some advice and your videos are what I've used to plan my last two high country trips. I have a mate visiting in early September through late. I'm located in Geelong. Can you recommend some spots that are open and good for scenic treks and swagging it at the time of year. Don't mind the cold and just need to find open spots when most gates are shut. Cheers for anything you can offer up.

That Dargo are still has a lot of tracks open all year round apart from Blue Rag.
You could do a run across from or back to Licola from Dargo taking in Billy Goat Bluff Tk if your and your mate are up for it.

Coming from Geelong it would be an easier day one drive to run billy from west to east. I noticed in your video and one other I follow on UA-cam, you guys run it from east to west. Would you consider it preferential to run in that direction or was it simply a matter of convenience based on where you were entering? Is it less risky one direction vs. the other? Btw in case it helps you recommend...2007 Prado 120 D4D, lifted, sliders, all the recovery gear, bar, winch, etc...experienced drivers coming along. Cheers mate and really appreciate all you do for the off-roading community, especially your focus on the HC. Its a great area and I consider myself so fortunate to have it so close.

Yea because my spare is different brand and only about 40% tread if i was doing long distance travel i would change it too a new 1

Great advice . . Another suggestion - Check your tyre pressures - Don't do a Leanne and be lazy, as we know, running low pressure on bitumen isn't a good idea. 🙄 🥴

G’Day Batesy. Excellent advice as usual mate. Do you find that you need to have wheel alignments done fairly regularly given the amount of impact the steering cops when doing a fair bit of rough off road work?

I haven't had a wheel alignment done since the tyres where fitted last year.
Still steering straight at the moment.
I'd only get a steering alignment of the steering started pulling to one side.

How often do you balance your wheels?

I only balance my wheels if I’m getting a vibration about 70kph through the steering wheel.
Those wheels currently haven’t been balanced in over 2-3 years.

I need to get up and do mine shortly so thanks for sharing. Honestly though it is something I have never worried about on any other vehicle Ive owned but have found the Passenger Side Rear is wearing quite a lot on the outside, Tyre shops & mechanics blame it on all the Round Abouts in my area. Being that is wearing so much on the outside would you still recommend putting it on the front passenger side? My spare is a Highway tyre atm so try to avoid using that and my Drivers Side Rear is much newer than the others due to a puncture in the side wall not to long ago. Should I just swap the sides for now?

If your spare is a totally different tyre, i probably wouldn't use it on the car with your other tyres.
Different tread patterns will react differently from the others, specially in the wet.
Just rotate the same tread tyres you have on your 4WD.

When those tyre went on, all 5 wheels were balanced, so they should be in balance after the rotation is complete.
Thats why go for a drive to see if they are still in balance as mine were.

You got a balancer in the shed? Pay a shop to do it properly..
I do my rotations properly.
Only need to pay for a balance if they are out after the rotation.
Nothing wrong with doing your own rotations.

You can only tell if they’re out of balance if you put them on a balancer! If you’re leaving it till it rattles your steering wheel it’s been out of balance for too long. And they have to take them off to balance them anyway, tell them how you want them rotated!
